I appreciate that. Slowly I'm making my way into having Linux administration be the majority of my job. It can be tough sometimes when, on paper, your experience is primarily with Windows administration.
Currently studying for my CCNA I plan to get this cert as well because I’m interested in system administration and I’m overall just curious, thanks for this video !
Additionally: While practicing, don't use StackOverflow, use 'man'. You have to understand how to read man-pages, because you don't have internet access during the exam. Understanding a specific man-page under time-pressure is very challenging. On the other hand, if you have understood this man-page during practice, you already know which section of the man-page will most likely help you.

You're welcome! Before you follow any path in IT, have an end-goal in mind. What does "Linux route" mean? Answering that will give you some focus and help you find an efficient learning path. Even if you can't answer it directly right now, simply trying to think that through will be helpful.

Thanks for this, it’s a hard course but also teaches me better than any other cert I’ve studied for. Unfortunately I can’t find any jobs that include work with Linux, just Windows like I’ve been doing for the past 4 years.
You're welcome. RHCSA is great for Linux system administration fundamentals. Many of the concepts are useful outside of the Red Hat ecosystem. On jobs, Over the last couple of years I've made the transition to jobs focusing mainly on Linux systems. What may help you, particularly as you gain experience, is try to find jobs where you having to manage both Windows systems and Linux systems.
Thanks for the review! I recently started studying for RHCSA on my own and coincidentally, the next week, my manager asked me if wanted to participate in Red Hat Training. I guess Red Hat gives my company Training with our contracts. Anyway. I said Hell Yea! Today I got an email saying I'm enrolled in the Red Hat Learning Standard subscription that includes 5 exams and 2 retakes. Excited.
@@EddieJennings I am lucky enough to have a red hat subscription. They’re certainly expensive. Red hat/ibm provide them to veterans through a partner vet organization. The courses are very in depth. All told, RH124 and RH134 are about 80 hours (including the labs). In addition to the video instruction there is a 400+ page downloadable e book for each course. What really makes these courses stand out are the labs. Throughout each chapter there are walkthrough (guided ) labs going over topics and at the end of each chapter there is an undivided lab with a series of steps to complete. These labs are graded and it lets you what steps to failed on. The labs are vms (aws I think) provided by red hat. It’s the best IT training I’ve ever taken and well worth what they’re asking for.

Juan, thanks for watching! For me, I had to make a bootable USB stick, which you boot from to do your exam, and I had to have a web cam so the proctor could see me. Once you register, Red Hat should give you full details about what you need.
Thanks Eddie for replying. After searching online for quite some time I found the ISO to make the bootable USB. I think Red Hat needs to be a little more aggressive marketing their exams. Looking forward to more RHCSA content in your channel as I am preparing to take the exam soon.

Tolonbai, taking it remotely was easy for me. I believe RHCSA 7 is available; however, when taking certs I tend to take current if at all possible. I can't say exactly how much time you need to prepare. My guide is more "do I know the content?" rather than "can I pass the test?". Once you can answer "yes" about the content, then you're ready for the exam.
Good info thanks. I completed RedHat two weeks training back in 2017 and still have the material (RHEL 7). I never took the test and just kept postponing and it now its been 3 years :(... 1 question i have is...is RHEL 7 material enough to pass the test being that exam is now in RHEL 8???
Thanks for watching! I never took the RHEL 7 exam, but comparing the objectives of the two, it looks like there is some crossover. What would probably make sense for your is to review the RHEL 7 pieces of the RHEL 8 objectives, then deep-dive on the new RHEL 8 objectives.
Titi, thanks for watching. The short answer to your question is "not likely." My practice session videos are just that "Practice sessions." While I fairly sure the information I have in them is accurate, they were a chance for me to assess whether or not I knew the material on the particular topic. Also, I didn't have time to do practice videos for every objective. I'd say you should use them as far as material that might give you a jump start or direction on where to go to get authoritative information, but I would not use them as your sole source of preparation for the RHCSA.

You can now get a free developer subscription, which grants your up to 16 instances of RHEL. I'd recommend using that for your preparation, so you can work on actual RHEL. developers.redhat.com/about
Hi Eddie, I'm just starting to study for the RHCSA, I have knowledge in networking (CCNA) and cloud computing (Azure admin cert), and I did a Linux essentials course. How long do you think it would take me to prepare for the certification? How long did it take you? Thanks!
That's tough to answer. I dabbled with Red Hat for a year or so before becoming serious about my exam prep. I think I took about 6 months of dedicated prep acitivites; however, my exam was delayed a few times since I was originally scheduled to take it at the start of what became the pandemic; thus, that gave me more prep time.
I work more as a data scientist but need to start adding more server knowledge to my skillsets. Is the RHCSA something I should try to start as a beginner or something like linux +. Only need cert for job requirements to be allowed to spin up my own servers.
If you're goal is to specifically learn about Red Hat Enterprise Linux, then yes, RHCSA wouldn't be a bad place to start. However, I interpret "server knowledge" as a more broad set of topics. What do you mean by "server knowledge?" Answering that will help you determine which (if) certification is right for you. As far as spinning up VMs, there's nothing stopping you from installing a hypervisor and going to town. Frankly, installing a hypervisor and trying to create VMs is a great way to learn. Do, break, fix, repeat. :) Both Hyper-V and KVM are free, and I'm pretty sure there's probably a free version of ESXi (VMWare) as well.
Joe, thanks for watching! mount -a is one way to verify fstab entries. What I was explaining for that part of the video was two fold. 1. Try to verify configurations as you're going along, so you don't have a surprise as your the end of your exam. 2. If you can verify some configuration will, in fact, persist without having to reboot to verify it persisted, then you can save yourself a bit of time. For me, if faced with objectives dealing with mounting file systems, mount -a was an easy way to verify if what I had configured in /etc/fstab was, in fact, valid.

I'm glad you found the video helpful! Anyone who takes the RHCSA has to agree to not disclose details about the test. I tend to follow a strict interpretation about this guideline, so I cannot answer your question directly.

Hey Eddie, what do you think about the other certifications like LPIC-1 or Linux+? Would those be good prep for something like RHSA? I’m currently studying for Linux Essentials.
I did not take Linux+, and I've seen a decent bit of critique about the quality of the exam -- your mileage may vary. I did take and pass Linux Essentials a year before taking RHCSA, but that was done out of a bit of "ok, I've been toying with this stuff for a while, let's see if I can pass some kind of cert." Also, if I recall, the exam was pretty cheap. Personally, I think RHCSA is a good starting point (even if you don't do Linux Essentials). The objectives are pretty clear, and there are a wealth of resources available to aid with preparation. The key question though for considering any certification is "What do skills do I want to learn?" Once you answer that question, if there is a certification that matches your goals, then it might provide you a curriculum to follow to learn the skills in a logical manner. At the end, once you're comfortable with the skills, you take the cert, and if you pass it you have the added bonus of learning the skills and have a cert to display. One thing to consider is RHCSA is focused on RedHat, where as the LPIC certs try to be vendor-agnostic. What I like about the Red Hat certs is that they aren't multiple-guess questions, they're hands-on exams. You get a list of objectives and an environment to work in, and you have to get the environment configure per the objectives. I, myself, may consider the LPIC certs if the objectives align with what I want to learn, but for what I've needed and for what I do in my career the Red Hat certs have served me well.

@@johnvardy9559 I think a better question is asking yourself what job are you wanting to do. If you're interested in working in the system administration space (which is what I do), and your current company has opportunities to manage Linux systems, that may be a good way to get a taste of Linux system administration without the stress of leaving your current job.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure, as I'm newly certified myself. My hunch is "no," but you'd have to contact Red Hat about that. In my experience the department involved with customer service for training's pretty responsive.
The cert is something you earn along your journey to learn skills. I'd recommend you ask yourself what job do you want, what skills do you need for the job, and is there a certification that may make sense to earn, which provides a guide for learning the skills you need. So...for what job are you looking? :)
A stratis pool refers to storage provided from block devices used to create stratis file systems.
