This video series covers the buying and installation of a Rheem (Richmond) tankless water heater. Part 1 is information on sizing the water heater for your application and some idea of costs and brands. Then I show my decision making process for where to locate the unit, framing the pony wall, and hanging it.

This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. ru-vid.comUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).

It's not really INSTANT hot water unless you have a recirculating pump setup. But It's the NEVER ENDING supply of hot water that really make these units superior to tanks. After using this unit for the last 3+ years, I will never go back to a tank water heater.

My tank water heater is 35 years old and still going strong. :) But I am looking at replacing it with a tankless water heater. When I was a kid growing in in Europe in the 1970's having a tankless unlimited hot water supply was the most normal thing in the world. They were very simple units back in the 1970's. Nothing more than a flowswitch turning on a burner heating a metal drum that had coiled copper tubing around it. No venting.

We’ve had our tankless hot water heater, made by Richmond for a year this month and I don’t think we would ever go back to a tank type water heater. I did the install the only thing I didn’t do was the gas one thing I do recommend is putting a one micron whole house filter that is my biggest recommendation with the tankless water heater have good whole house filtration

Use a water filter for sediment. Use a water softener to remove magnesium and calcium. Then a carbon filter to remove chlorine. Then a scale inhibitor which puts phosphate in the water, but note the water dept probably already is putting phosphate in the water and of course the chlorine. (chlorine damages the phosphate in the inhibitor). I'm in Rockford, Illinois. Same issues with lots of chlorine and minerals in the water. Run a tap for drinking water after the carbon filter and before the water softener.

I have a Navien, it vents with 2” as well. I also installed it myself so no I will not get warranty but I’m competent and I was willing to risk it… and I drained and kept my old tank unit in case something goes wrong that I can’t fix myself and it takes a few days to get a pro in. It should also be noted that since you installed this Rheem yourself you too will get zero warranty support FYI. That’s the caveat with ALL tankless water heater brands.

Brian, I missed your comment here. That is good to know! Even if I did void the warranty, it would still be worth it because the installation would have cost me 2.5x the cost of the unit anyway. Of course, whether DIY or paying a professional, making sure the unit is installed & maintained correctly is the most important part of getting the most life out of the it.

6 years for a hot water tank!!?? Here in B.C., Canada, a replacement HW tank is about $1700 Can ($1350 U$) installed all in. I'll be damned if I'm shelling out that kind of coin every 6 years. I just replaced a perfectly good tank after 18 years and only because my insurance policy says it needs to be changed every 10 or they will not cover any damage. So I live dangerously. I vowed to go tankless with this last swap but caved due to the $1800 price tag. Also here in government bubble wrap safety Nazi Canada, only a certified gas fitter is able to install any gas appliance. In fact, you are not allowed to take the appliance from the store. It must be picked up by the certified dude.

No fucking kidding. A Home Depot salesman came out to my house, and I was GD surprised what they wanted in labor. FIgure 3 times the cost of the TWH in labor. Yeah, no joke. That put it outside of our price range. I've done a tank for my Dad in his rental house when he was alive, so I don't know how much harder that this could be.

I dont want to sound like one of those "you messed up" know it alls. So in the nicest way, when installing my water heater I was unsure of the air inlet and exaust specs. So I called Rheem and asked them. They recommended at least 12" updraft from the unit before the first elbow. I do not know the reasoning for this it is just what they told me. So off to Home Depot I went to get 12" water pipe and the lowered then unit 12". Other than that good video.
@FixItScotty
@FixItScotty 2 года назад
Thanks for the information! Too late for me, but others can benefit. I had a long conversation with Rheem support about venting and they never mentioned that. Either it depends on the tech you get on the phone, or they evolved their venting instructions over time. Either way, thanks for commenting and for watching!
@twbrkfd1733
@twbrkfd1733 2 года назад
That makes no sense since the heater is a power vented, i.e., pressurized, combustion device; there is no "draft" in the combustion. Maybe 12" for heat distribution into the exhaust, but the exhaust gas is already supposed to be "cool".

So far, so good. It is still working well after 2+ years. If you click on the playlist at the end of the video you can see the 5 part series I made for the installation. Each video deals with a specific topic: venting, gas piping, water piping, etc. I discuss the materials needed in each one. But, for the most part, you need the service valve kit, 2" PVC & fittings, gas piping, and (in my case) copper pipe and fittings for the supply.

Could you in theory just leave the intake pipe in the room so you don’t have to run two pipes out? I’m asking because I’m looking to do this to my home and I’ve only have one exhaust outlet going through my roof.
@twbrkfd1733
@twbrkfd1733 2 года назад
You could do that, but there could be a problem with backdraft caused by other venting devices like a kitchen exhaust which could result in gas poisoning. In addition, the furnace might already be consuming a large portion of the available air if it is using inside air for combustion. Early high eff furnaces used inside air. Cut a hole in the wall as manufacturers suggest to get a good supply of fresh combustion air.

I searched through the comments but didn’t see anything in open air venting. Code says you can vent to open air as long as you have “X” number of square feet available or an opening to the outside. Living in Las Vegas, I have two 4”x8” openings in my garage wall. Is there any reason I can’t vent with the standard “B” vent from my tank heater and draw outside air from the garage wall vents?

I believe I discussed this a little in the Q&A in the last video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sb5oLP1iiAA.html). But if you are sure the room you installed the unit doesn't need makeup air AND the air is not too dusty (like an old attic), I have seen install techs just put a little section of PVC with a grill on it for the intake. Something like this: www.homedepot.com/p/NORITZ-2-in-PVC-Bird-Screen-for-Tankless-Water-Heater-VT2-PVCS/306877760

Why PVC for the air intake and exhaust instead of alluminum?
@FixItScotty
@FixItScotty 4 года назад
Like high efficiency furnaces, these water heaters produce exhaust that is not extremely hot so they don't need metal exhaust. But the reason for PVC is because the exhaust can produce an acidic water vapor that can corrode metals.

Our water is quite hard, but yeah, 6-8 years is about what to expect for the el-cheapo big-box-store water heater with a 6-year warranty. $350 out the door. You get what you pay for. This tankless should last at least 15 years with proper care, but I wouldn't mind getting 30!

@FixItScotty
@FixItScotty Год назад
There is no way to "duplicate the install". Your installation will not look like mine. If you go through the installation playlist videos, each describes the general materials I had to purchase (copper fittings, 2" PVC, gas piping, etc). If that isn't enough detail, then you shouldn't even attempt an installation of this complexity.

Hey Scotty ... I only watched a few minutes into this. Let me ask you, also maybe make a video on this topic. Do you think someone who has DYI experience can do this themselves? I got a fooking crazy quote from some pushy Home Depot, "come to your house" quote that make it seem impossible to afford. I've put in a tank water heater 10 years ago for my Dad in his old house that he converted into a rental home to help pay for his nursing home care. So, if I could do that, you think that it is possible for me to do this -- if I watch you video and pay attention? Also, how does the damned warranty work -- if you do it yourself? I read somewhere that Rheem (or maybe it was Navien) won't cover it if it is not from one of their personally selected installers. So, are your parts covered if they go out with no fault of your own. Anyway, thanks for a video series. I plan to binge-watch it, but I'm tired after dealing with Home Depot people and then one their "salesmen" (you know what I mean) coming to my house. Damned tired and little pissed that they want to make three times what the unit costs in labor for the installation, or that's what I am guessing they are wanting to charge.
@FixItScotty
@FixItScotty 2 года назад
If you just skim through the videos on the playlist, it will give you a good idea of the scope of the tankless heater installation. My installation required everything from framing the wall that it hangs on to running all new venting through the side of the house. The important thing is to know you gas meter sizing first (that may require a plumber) to confirm your gas meter is capable of handling the increased gas requirements that a tankless needs. Then you need to be comfortable doing plumbing of supply lines (copper or pex), PVC venting, and gas piping. As far as the warranty, I was told that Rheem doesn't require certain installers in order to get warranty support. I was able to call their support technical line and get help despite not being a licensed technician. But I haven't had to file a warranty claim, so I don't know if they will honor any warranty claims I might have. Good luck!

@@FixItScotty Okay, I just skimmed what you said and thanks for a reply.

@@FixItScotty But, I want to say that I had a freaking guy quote last night and want a GOD-AWFUL amount of money, something like $7000+. But that's the tankless included. However, one thing that I did see is that newer tankless ones can use a smaller gas line. Because he looked at mine, and I have those foldy, yellow lines to my current tank heater. Maybe 3/4's -- not sure. And, he said that it's enough, and he didn't seem to say that I need to re-run new lines from the side of house. I looked at it a few years back (say 4 or 5) when I was hit after Hurricane and really thinking about re-doing a lot of stuff, and I would have had to install new 1" lines at that time. But, I think newer ones don't need as much gas.

@@FixItScotty Again, thank you for these videos. ANd, I am sorry you get some Haters. Just forget about them, and FOOK THEM. Your kindness and dedication to documenting this process is wonderful and meaningful. Even if you made a few mistakes, there are always glitches in the system. So, you ignor them and think about the people that you help ... like me. So, you'll probably hear from me more, and I'll keep you updated. But, I don't know. I might just go with tank because it'd be a simple switch-out. But, I'm (right now) soon to get my A/C entire units switched out, so I thought as they were going up & down --they could move the tank up there for me and take my old one out.
@FixItScotty
@FixItScotty 2 года назад
@@PoeLemic Wow, $7K is a lot! Perhaps another way to go about this is to purchase the unit yourself and hire a plumber who is willing to work hourly with you on it.
