it's odd because I was one of the first people to prolly assume some of the whole "oh, they prolly are deconstructing because they moved to California" but now I find myself a few years later doing something very similar I've left organized religion for just plain spirituality I've held on to some of the old beliefs that do seem to still resonate with me during my fellowshipping with God. I do believe in God but I don't think He's the way organized religions paint Him to be. I believe He's unconditional love and doesn't condemn or judge us. I don't believe their such a place as hell either. I believe life is school where we come for our soul to learn to do things we can't in heaven because only love exists in heaven so you can't think any different or experience anything but love there. Earth is a place for us who are bored to come and experience something different imo. I've been studying a lot of NDE podcasts and stories and that stuff resonates much more than organized religion. I've gone from being raised Catholic and going to a high school run by nuns to Mormonism, and Christianity, to just plain spiritual now. I do believe in God and miracles because of my own personal experiences, miracles I've received, and testimony. I just lean into trying to be my most authentic self, lean into honesty/truth even if it stings, push to constantly learn/grow/heal/evolve, and experience/create as much unconditional love & light into the world.

The thing that Howie isn't understanding is that who Rhett and Link are as people, and their lives together as best friends, is a huge defining part of their entire brand. It's a huge part of why people like them in the first place. All their fans know they've been best friends since school, that they made a blood oath together, they went to college together to become engineers, etc etc. Their fans feeling like they _know_ them is really integral to what they love about them.. so leaving out this hugely significant part of that journey feels inauthentic. I totally understand them wanting to tell the deconstruction story.

I think Howie struggles comprehending how hard it is to get out of Christianity after being publicly involved with it. I grew up in a family that shoved church and christianity down our throats. We went to church twice a week, Sunday school every Sunday, vocational summer school for 2 weeks a summer , and the church group 2 week camp, and then volunteering as a older kid for teaching at summer school and as a camp counselor. For the younger kids. Between baptism as a new born up through confirmation to graduation from high school. I went to church every time that was designated to attend. Once I was old enough to get a regular tax paying job. My Mom tried talking me into taking off that 4 weeks of work to attend both church camp and the 2 weeks for vocational summer school for 2 weeks . As a teen I fudged it saying I couldn’t have off for both. And if I had to I could take the 2 weeks off for one of them. But my boss would prefer if she didn’t have to cover that long. And surprisingly she didn’t make me do it my Sophomore year. And once I graduated from high school and moved out of my parents house. My church attendance dropped off slowly. Then I was married and had our kids. One spring Sunday morning. It was BEAUTIFUL outside. And our whole family was sitting around our table eating breakfast getting ready to leave for church. The kids looked so unhappy at the thought of sitting in church for a hour and then sitting in Sunday school for another hour. The the same thing for my husband. Not one of us wanted to go. And I looked over at my husband and said I really don’t feel like going to church do you. And he just looked over at me like are you serious. And I asked by a show of hands who feels like going to church? And everyone looked at me cautiously. And I said seriously I want to know because I really don’t feel like it. Now show me who wants to stay home from church. And everyone raised their hands. And I just looked over at them and said go get out of those dress clothes and put on play clothes. And they all mad dashed to their bedroom’s to change. About 5 minutes after I heard them running down the hallway and I hollered out you hung up everything didn’t you and they all turned around and went and hung up their dress clothes. And the kids ran out to the backyard to play. And my husband asked so is this a one time occurrence or what. And I just said it dawned on me. I was forced into being a church kid. And I know my husband was a church kid. And our oldest was 9 and the youngest 5 and then had been church kids. And I told my husband. I had learned to really find so many things that I questioned and didn’t fully understand. And he admitted the same. And as a teenager I was over having to attend church all the time. And he admitted to feeling the same thing. And I said I don’t want to feel angry and resentful of having to go. I would prefer to go when and if I feel like it. I don’t want to have to go. And my husband said. He agreed and said ok let’s tell the kids. Ok we aren’t going to be church every Sunday people anymore. But we have to go on Christmas and Easter and for weddings and funerals and baptisms. And the kids all agreed that worked for them. Edit: The next Saturday after we had our first making the choice not to attend. Our Pastor made a call to our house at dinner time. And I told him straight out. At our front door. I stepped out and said. We’re done. We pray at home. We follow the commandments and try to live our lives to be the best possible versions of ourselves. And I turned and walked back into our house and shut the door and locked it. Never had I ever felt so empowered. And at least once a month at some point for the next 6 months someone from the church would try to get us to come back. At that point on a Tuesday afternoon because I knew that the pastor would be there to set up for Wednesday services. And I cornered him in his office. And told him that he needs to tell the congregation to stop coming by our house to try and talk us into coming back to the church. If not I was going to go to the police station and tell them that you and the congregation are harassing us and it is scaring my children. And he just looked over at me and said he thought it might help to bring us back. And I told him. No that’s just pushing me not to ever want to step foot in his church ever again. And he said ok he will tell them to stop bothering us. And please don’t report the church. We never made it back for Christmas or Easter and we only went to weddings and funerals and baptisms at churches other then ours. And our friends that we knew from church also ended up quitting attendance after they saw all the crap the church did to my family.

@@JonahNelson7My interpretation of what they said is that some male friendships can involve poor communication about emotions and conflict may not be dealt with from a place of love and compassion, and overly modulated by anger. It's part of the general stereotype (which is, happily, lessening these days) of men being reluctant and/or less able to talk about their emotions. In my understanding that comes largely from having been brought up to hide emotions not to appear weak, which also has the compounding effect of making such men bad at processing and communicating their emotions simply because of lack of practice - a positive feedback effect. And that Rhett and Link clearly buck this trend. Sorry for the essay lol

I feel second hand frustration for rhett and link in this interview. I don't know if howie was just trying to argue and belittle intentionally but yikes. Rhett and Link started as a brand of two christian guys with young kids. That wasn't for everyone, and now their content is intentionally growing with their kids so it will be for different people but still not everyone. RU-vid as far as viewer engagement is worlds different from mainstream. They have a different relationship to the mythical beasts than howie would have ever had as a mainstream media personality. AGT is not for everyone. AGT is for people who are talented. AGT are for people who want to watch others get judged for their talent. Sometimes content isn't for everyone and that's literally fine, but arguing that rhett and link shouldn't show themselves authentically and then comparing their platform to mainstream television content. It's different, no worse than the other just different. Teens need privacy - their bodies are changing, their hygiene needs are changing, their feelings are all over the place, and they're striving to grow into an adult while still feeling like a kid - crying at everything, getting angry easier, ect. They're having growth pains, and new cramps, and ... well we can dance around the topic, but let's be blunt - teens masturbate. It's gonna happen. Taking away their door at that time of life is a punishment centered in humiliation, and it makes me raise an eyebrow at the parent who jumps to use it for basic discipline. by build themselves up on Christianity do you mean doing well for yourself as a Christian or (in this scenario) building your career and wealth on Christianity? Because though they were very Christian, their content was never really focused on it. Nowadays their content is very produced, cause that’s their jobs and they employ a bunch of people. They have a bunch of different types of content they put out and some of it is more personal than others. GMM is very overproduced. Their podcast is more personal though as they just talk to each other and tell stories about themselves. A lot of the appeal with them is their 40 year friendship and the history they have together, it’s rare to find friends like that anymore. A lot of their fans have been around for a long time, and they have so much content from before everything was overproduced that it seems more interpersonal. But before they were RU-vidrs they had a website where they would post their skits and music together and very early in their careers they had a TV show and stuff so they are very career focused but they’re very nice, good people. Anyways, I haven’t listened to this podcast yet so I’m sorry if some of this info was redundant, I just wanted to share some of my thoughts.

Yup. The reason a lot of people feel the need to vocalize after something like that isn’t a selfish one, it’s altruistic. Not sure if Howie was just off this episode or if he’s normally like this, but he was a pretty terrible host throughout this interview. I like that they talked about how extreme Christians will say they accept others but feel that they themselves know "the truth" so they are not actually accepting of others. I had a friend who was very open about her Christian faith, and so I kept my own beliefs on the low-low (I am more on the Pagan/Wiccan side). She claimed to be super accepting of others, so eventually I opened up about my beliefs and she seemed very open-minded and accepting. All I asked of her was to not preach to me about her religious beliefs because I accepted her beliefs as her own, so I was not going to preach to her. She told me she would respect my beliefs. But her true colors started to show. She claimed she accepted those in the LGBTQ+ community, but said that when they die, they go to "the other place" a.k.a. Hell. She claimed that she was accepting of my different religious beliefs, then one day after work, she suddenly began to preach to me and told me that I needed turn to her god or else I would go to Hell. I was so stunned that I was literally speechless and she took my silence as an invitation to continue preaching to me. Then when I confronted her about it, she was upset that I was upset about her preaching to me, because in her belief, she was doing good by her god and spreading "the truth." I rarely talk to her now.

While you prioritize being likeable to a variety of people, they reach an entirely different audience as they have been on youtube for over a decade. RU-vidrs are typically a lot more personal with their audience and share details of their lives a lot more frequently than mainstream celebs. I don’t think it’s crazy that they wanted to open up to their audience about their past in their church and their change of faith. Especially if some of their audience felt alienated because of their extreme beliefs. I don’t think appealing to everyone was their main goal, it’s authenticity, honesty and vulnerability.

Honestly I get the relationship thing with it just being them and being friends for so long. You eventually get annoyed with the other person but still love them. Being in a band with 5 people is very hard to work around each personality for so long but at the end of the day we are friends and we love making music together and playing music together. If the chemistry wasn't there, then it would be a failed band relationship.
