Constraints in 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software improve workflow by enabling designers to create parametric designs that can be easily modified and updated. Constraints are rules that define the relationships between different parts of a 3D model, such as the distance between two points or the angle between two lines. Here are a few ways in which constraints can improve the design workflow:
Faster design iterations: With constraints in place, designers can easily make changes to the design without having to manually adjust every individual part. For example, if the distance between two parts needs to be changed, the designer can simply modify the constraint, and the rest of the design will update automatically.
Greater design accuracy: Constraints ensure that the design remains accurate and consistent, even as it is modified. This reduces the likelihood of errors and ensures that the design meets the required specifications.
Improved design communication: Constraints enable designers to communicate their design intent more effectively. By setting up constraints, designers can clearly communicate the relationships between different parts of the design to other members of the design team, or to manufacturers.
Easier design maintenance: Once a design is complete, it can be difficult to make modifications or updates without breaking other parts of the design. With constraints in place, designers can easily modify and update the design without having to worry about the impact on other parts of the design.
In summary, constraints in 3D CAD such as Rhino can improve workflow by enabling faster design iterations, greater design accuracy, improved design communication, and easier design maintenance. By using constraints, designers can create parametric designs that are more efficient, accurate, and easier to modify and maintain.

Driven dimensions and constraints are powerful tools in Rhino CAD that offer several advantages to designers and engineers. Here are a few of them: Precise control: Driven dimensions and constraints allow users to maintain precise control over their designs. Easy modification: When using driven dimensions and constraints, changes to the design can be made easily and quickly. By simply adjusting the value of a dimension or constraint, the entire model can be updated automatically. Better design iterations: Driven dimensions and constraints allow designers to explore different design iterations quickly and easily. By adjusting parameters and constraints, they can quickly evaluate different design options without having to rebuild the entire model from scratch. Dimension-driven modeling allows you to create parametric designs, which means that you can easily modify and adjust your model without having to start from zero. Overall, driven dimensions and constraints are essential tools in Rhino CAD that help designers create more accurate and efficient designs, and iterate more quickly and easily.

It has been shelved until at least version 9 as has my purchasing decision :/ The reason I was told is that the devs feel it is a solution looking for a problem sigh... Please if you want this feature in Rhino, saturate the Rhino forums asking why the feature is not a priority!!!

This is the one thing that has kept me from using Rhino as I like to know exactly what size everything is going to be and if a size is going to change everything else will move. I started learning it from early V1 beta in the 90's. Since then I have learned Catia, Inventor, Fusion and Ironcad. If they can ever implement Rhino to build parts that close to Ironcad & Fusion and have deep control of sketch & assembly constraints like Catia then I am sold. I love the surfacing capabilities along with using a command line.

I was wondering if Rhino could do this. I have been considering buying it, but I would 100% need constraints. I will keep an eye out for v8 before committing to it. I'll stick to a combination of FreeCAD and Lightwave until then.

TBH, i find the tool kind of fidgety ATM.. but am pretty sure will get better as Rhino has a reputation of being reliable and stable. But if you need parametric, the inbuilt grasshopper already can do it as long as your model does not require complex surface blending.

very nice - if i would want from your final dimension a extrusion for 100 ... is it possible to give it also a parametric value that i can change later? Or do i have to make it in grasshopper?

@@simpernchong ah thank you - i read something in this comments below about it. Very sad, because its really a great software but for parametric It's not so easy to use like Fusion360 or Solidworks or even FreeCad. But i still love to use it for fast prototypes which dont need paramentric to see if the product idea would work or how it could look like. Do you maybe have a grasshopper tutorial - a simple one for beginner - where you make a plane - extrude it - and then boolish the inner out, or something like this - just simple ones to understand. You have so great tutorials - which are way more advanced. I love the results, but I think sometimes it's easier to use something easy to rebuild which has parametric functions. Like a box where you can put things from top inside, and you can adjust the thickness of the wall or the dept, height of the box and so on. Just a simple tutorial i try to find.

@@simpernchong Yes, McNell's communication regarding this was truly atrocious. It was a reason for me to upgrade to Rhino 8 but then suddenly I couldn't find anything and it was only through the forum that I became aware that it had been removed.
@hewhointheearthlydomainsee1272
I hope for constraints in the third dimension and embedded on nonplanar surfaces as well as planar. Basically a language of design. FreeCAD is a bit rough around the edges. And Rhino also. Not quite professional as I would describe the term. 3D software is not yet at the sweet spot of creativity and professionalism. Because then you would be in a flow state spending hours on it and nothing hindering it.
@incomebuilder4032

People have built production super cars and other complex designs using Rhino for years. And here we have a wimp whining about non-professionism of 3d software. You cannot do professional 3d cad work ..
@hewhointheearthlydomainsee1272
@@incomebuilder4032 They probably don’t have control over the results. They have to settle for sloppy work. And they maybe have to spend a long time making adjustments when the result is not right. Their designs are unconstrained and they have to use their eyeball too much. Maybe if they are just making the shell of a car they can afford a little sloppiness. Though I gather that they would not use these 3D software if they were being professional, they perhaps use wind tunnel simulations to design the shape. Or an actual wind tunnel. It’s true I have not yet made a big project yet. I am aiming to do big things in a day or a few than months or years. Time is just a way of compensating for mental fragility. I hope to get the process down. Then I believe I will work very fast and productively. I think I am capable. I gather your definition of professional is just what get you paid than the quality of the work. There are maybe a lot of inept people going with just good enough to please the untrained eye. It does become a problem when people are not working their hardest and delivering the best. It makes the economy bad. No one is getting proper value. It’s just a theory. That there a lot of sloppy paid people with illusions of professionalism they project because other people don’t know any different. It’s really just a theory. Or a prediction. And if it’s untrue fair enough.

@@simpernchong yes, this is exactly where to use it. I've used rhino for 15 years now and it's great for sketching and discovering shapes and form but not really usable for me when I go from exploring to refining. The strengths of freedom flip over to being the problem. Iterations are super slow. If this works i can ditch Fusion360!
