A red hot nickel ball on an aluminum and iron oxide powder mixture did not start the thermite reaction which happens at around 4000 °F/ 2204 °C. A strip of magnesium which burns around 5,610 °F / 3,100 °C will ignite thermite. Whats left after the reaction is molten Iron and glass from melted sand.

+Evan Parker When it burns, the ratio of chemical potential energy is at a higher output than that of most fuels. Thermite is mainly used to manufacture steel, since it's one of the fuels that can burn hot enough to melt steel. It's usually made of iron and aluminum bonded with an oxide, which gives it the amount of energy output from the ionic compounds used in the making of it.

The problem is, as the description states, that the Nickel Ball is no where near hot enough to start the reaction in the Thermite. Nickel's melting point is actually 2,651°F (1,455°C), and the nickel ball wasn't even melting, it was only red hot, meaning that it was no where near the 4,000°F/2,204°C that is needed for this blend of thermite. There's your daily science bite.

Yeah I was mistaken. After extensively searching, I found exactly 0 places selling pure tungsten balls. They were all tungsten carbide or alloy. Suprisingly, I also didn't find anyone offering pure tungsten stock. Perhaps a graphite ball heated by arc would suffice as long as it didn't catch fire or turn to diamond.

I suggested this an incredibly long time ago, I'm happy to see that you did it. One day, I'd like you to revisit this experiment. What you could of done is put magnesium shavings on top of the thermite, then placed the rhnb on the shavings. The rhnb should have enough heat to ignite the magnesium.

Thermite will melt nickel. (The reaction reaches temperatures around the boiling point of aluminum) Thermite will also kind of explode if it's pre-heated before ignition, which is why a fuse is used, and a blow-torch isn't held directly to the mixture.
@soylentgreenb
@soylentgreenb 10 лет назад
There are also many different kinds of thermite mixtures, ranging from those that will explode with a bang and throw molten droplets of metal to those who will need continuous heating to slowly react. Looking at the difference in electronegativity gives an indication if and how violently a metal oxide will react with a metal. Grain size also matters a lot. Almost any different combination of a more electronegative oxide with a less electronegative metal is possible. E.g. calcium metal and uranium dioxide. What explains the popularity of iron(III)oxide and aluminium is the cheapness of the raw materials and the historical usefulness of the reaction for e.g. welding rail road tracks.

The products of the thermite reaction are actually iron and aluminum oxide, the second hardest material found in nature, not 'glass'. This reaction has a practical everyday use, railroad section crews use it to weld rails together in the field. They use a thermite mix that includes small pellets of other metals such as cobalt and manganese to create the needed steel alloy.

Mixing with clay spreads the mix of iron oxide and aluminum best I feel. However doesn't particularly matter. The activating energy required to start the reaction is really high, which is why a magnesium strip burning at 1000c or 1000f (I forget, could be neither) starts it so well. And thats why it worked the second time when he had the rhnb glowing white indicating a higher temperature.
