Old Town Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a treasure trove of historical sights and stunning beaches. Walking through its cobblestone streets feels like stepping back in time, with medieval architecture at every turn. The Palace of the Grand Master, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, stands majestically in the heart of the old town, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich history through its well-preserved rooms and exhibits.
As you wander through the maze-like streets, you'll encounter ancient mosques, imposing fortifications, and charming Byzantine churches, each telling a story of Rhodes' past. The Street of the Knights, lined with grandiose medieval buildings, evokes the spirit of the knights who once inhabited the island.
The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, a massive statue that once stood proudly at the entrance of the harbor in the city of Rhodes, on the Greek island of the same name. It was constructed to celebrate Rhodes' victory over the invading forces of Cyprus in 305 BC.
Commissioned by the citizens of Rhodes, the statue was designed and built by the sculptor Chares of Lindos. Construction began around 292 BC and took approximately 12 years to complete. The Colossus was a depiction of the Greek sun god Helios, standing at an impressive height of around 33 meters (about 108 feet), making it one of the tallest statues of the ancient world.
The Colossus of Rhodes was crafted from bronze and iron plates, which were affixed to a framework made of iron and stone. According to historical accounts, it stood with its legs apart, allowing ships to pass beneath it as they entered the harbor. Its outstretched arms held a torch aloft, symbolizing enlightenment and protection.
The statue stood for nearly 56 years before it was toppled by an earthquake in 226 BC. Despite its massive size, the Colossus collapsed at the knees and lay in ruins for centuries. Eventually, the broken pieces were scavenged by conquerors and sold as scrap metal.
Although the Colossus of Rhodes no longer exists, its legacy lives on in art, literature, and popular culture. Its iconic stature as a symbol of ancient engineering and artistic achievement continues to captivate imaginations around the world, even in its absence.
When it's time to unwind, head to one of the nearby beaches. The old town's proximity to the coast means that sun-soaked shores are just a stone's throw away. From bustling beaches like Elli Beach, with its lively atmosphere and array of water sports, to quieter coves like Agios Pavlos Beach, where you can relax in peace, there's a spot for every beach lover.
Whether you're exploring its historic sights or soaking up the sun on its pristine beaches, Old Town Rhodes offers a perfect blend of culture and relaxation.
