What a spectacular collection of rhododendrons! I’ve never seen yellow rhodies! I love your passion for these wonderful plants. The rhododendron forest pulls at my heart. As a kid living in Newhalem, Washington, there was a gardener who kept beautiful gardens around town full of purple and lavender and pink rhododendrons and they were a magical place to play and hide out under and imagine adventures. My understanding is that the town is being deconstructed and allowing the natural plants to take over. So much has been destroyed to allow the land to recover. It’s heartbreaking to think of all those lovely gardens torn up. Thank you thank you for sharing this beautiful garden. I could just watch this for hours.

Your rhodie collection is amazing Mike. I'm taking notes in case my new place has space to plant some. I remember the very first time I saw a Loderi King George and it has been a dream to have one. The Crystal Springs Rhodendron garden here in Portland had one that has been pruned well and the bark and flowers are so gorgeous. Those huge fragrant blooms were such a surprise. How could I not fall in love. A neighbor had a tall lanky yellow bloomer that died from neglect. The flowers were a soft yellow and they died gracefully, no browning. Still sad I didn't grab a cutting when I could.

That brought me memories of my Aunt. She had a couple of rhododendrons in her front yard. They were huge and beautiful. The people who bought her house now took them out. Now it's just grass all the beautiful plantings are gone.

Heaven!! A great alternate for orange rhodies is Gibraltar azaleas. I think I have found my acreage finally. If everything works out, it's 4.5 acres about 3 minutes from me! I'm so excited! I'm going to line my fence line with rhododendrons and cherry and crabapple trees, now that I see yours. 💜🧡💛❤️💚

I just got a Firestorm red Rhododendron I live in Maine in the woods I planted it in full sun with evening shade. I added a bumper compost soil. Now I pray 🙏 😂

My ever first rhododendron was transplanted that self seeded in the trunk of a nz Punga Fern! I was about 8 at the time when I discovered it.. 16 years later and it’s still growing gorgeously in my mothers garden with bubblegum pink flowers.. not sure the specifics.. unfortunately a few years back we had to cut half of the plant as one side just died off mysteriously 💔.. but it’s grown a lot on that side since and still is a decent shrub/tree 🙌🏼 just started to propagate rhododendrons because of your Channel! They grow crazy here in nz 🇳🇿 Absolutely admire seeing vintage 20-30ft giant rhododendron shrubs along the country side on old farm properties.. can’t wait to discover more like in your video! 😍🇳🇿 Keep up the fantastic work 🪴💚

I have a book from 1951.. on insects.. lace wings eat aphids.. so aphids may be your true insect drawing the lace wings into your garden plants.. birds eat lace wings (adults).. round larvae cocoons and and silk sacks are found for lace wings on the leaf tops.. from which lace wing adults emerge from.. cleaner bird feeder are oranges on branches or jelly works well.. but I believe your lace wings may possible be aphids.. suds dish soap I have heard does well for that.. hope this helps.. love the blooms..

We have a newbuilt house, and I learn about plants, growing, and taking care of them. I wonder if I can propagate Cape Mirttle Tree, these trees are common in Carolinas.

Went to your Instagram bc of Honey Butter and Big Sam x Lem's Cameo! 😍 Had to watch 3x in order to write down all the names and colors. 🤦🏻‍♀️ That "Chinese Groundcover" looks a lot like a smaller version of May|Hog Apple that we have every May in the South... They get small white flowers under the huge leaves. Then they die back until next May.

Podophyllum pleianthum is a Chinese mayapple. There are also North American mayapples; the leaves are more indented/segmented on the N. American plant.

Beautiful garden, man. Love your videos, find them extremely helpful. I'd love see what you do as far as ants, fungus gnats, aphids, powdery mildew fungus, ect inside the greenhouse. Can't use many chemicals because my chickens are so close to my greenhouse.

Hi Mike, Greetings from Nottingham UK. I’ve always like rhododendrons since I was a child. The university here has them as a hedgerow and that’s what I remember always being there. I will have to send you a picture of them. Anyway, took delivery of my first ever plants today, a variety called grumpy and one called Catherine Alcock (I think) and looking forward to taking cuttings possibly next year. Interesting the amount of varieties you have do not seem to be available here but never mind, variety is the spice of life. Btw my sister lives near Vancouver WA and there are loads of rhododendrons there also.

"You gotta commit guys!" Some time later: "Yeah I need to weed some of these beds. Cut me some slack guys". Gardener's life :°)

Hey mike, your garden is looking nice. I am lucky that the lace wings have not found my yard yet. Have you tried attracting parasitic wasps to manage the lace bugs? They eat bugs, nectar and pollen; so it is a matter of planting companion ornamentals to supplement their diet. They don't really help against leaf-roller aphids, but they will patrol your yard all day in search of bugs to eat. They seem to be especially interested in members of the Aster family. Calendula, cosmos, and sunflower seem to really bring them in. Calendula Winters over in our yard, and drops plenty of seeds that germinate naturally. During the Summer, you will never see sedum succulent flowers without some kind of bee working them. A broken sedum will root on a gravel driveway, so they are easy to propagate. Many varieties of dahlia are also good for the wild bees, but slugs also love them. Have you considered breeding any of your rhododendrons? You certainly have a good variety to choose from. They do not appear to be difficult to germinate or grow as seedlings. You could do planned crosses, open pollination, or both. The seeds are very tiny and abundant, so you could probably germinate ~10,000 seeds in a dozen seedling trays. If you cull ruthlessly, you could reduce that to 48-72 per tray by the end of the first season. I may try one or two trays this Fall/Winter, but none of my varieties are very special. I have 'Dreamland', 'Purple Passion', 'Taurus', 'Nova Zembla', and 'Jean Marie de Montague'.

안녕하세요? 여기는 한국입니다. 한국에도 이 식물이 있어요. 이름은 만병초입니다. 생긴 것은 꽃만 보면 진달래나 철쭉과 비슷해요. ^^ 한국의 태백산, 울릉도, 지리산, 설악산, 백두산 등 해발 1,000m가 넘는 고산지대에 천연 분포하는데, 대부분 하얀 꽃이 핍니다. 하지만 백두산에는 노란 꽃이 피는 노랑만병초가 있고, 울릉도에는 붉은 꽃이 피는 홍만병초가 있어요. 외국에는 좀더 다양한 색상의 만병초가 있더군요. 지난달에 화훼단지에 가보니 연분홍도 있더라구요? 아마도 수입종이거나 개량종같지만 너무 예뻤어요. 3~4M 는 거뜬히 크는 나무로 관상용, 조경용으로 멋진 나무인데 정원을 갖게 된다면 연분홍색을 심고 싶어요. 모두들 건강 조심하시고 행복하세요~^^

HIi, I live in zone 3 and recently I bought rhododendrone Rosy LIghts and White Lights. The Northern LIghts series varieties are the most cold hardy and grow max 4 f. I would like to plant them as close as possible so that whit and pinky blooms would blend, intermix, to give an impression of one big bush with white and rosy flowers. Have you seen something similar in your practice? Do you thnk it is a good idea? Thank you.

Beautiful! Question, should most rhodies have their lower branches pruned out? Mine always wants grow down with droopy branches at the bottom. I've had one root once from touching the ground. Please take down the dead tree, you know all the reasons you need to. Just commit. 😉

Do these rhododendron like full sun. I have one that gets a lot of shade. It blooms but never seems to get big like these. I am also in zone 7a.

Do they have a scent like roses do? Do they have thorns? The flowers are beautiful.

I used biocontrol to help with the lace bug on my azaleas. Here’s some information to help manage them. Cultural Control Grow plants that are well adapted to conditions at the site. Consider replacing plants that perform poorly or repeatedly experience unacceptable pest damage. Certain plant species growing in hot, sunny locations are more likely to be damaged by lace bugs. For example, azalea and toyon grown under partial shade experience less damage by lace bugs than when they are grown in locations more exposed to direct sunlight and higher temperatures. Provide adequate irrigation and otherwise provide plants with appropriate care. On toyon and possibly other shrubs, lace bug survival during winter and subsequent damage in spring may be reduced by keeping soil beneath host plants bare during December through February, by shallowly cultivating the soil surface several times during this period, or using both practices. For example, during late fall rake away and compost leaves beneath lace bug host plants. If organic mulch is reapplied in spring, avoid using leaves from the same plant genus as mulch near that plant because it may harbor adult lace bugs. Biological Control Natural enemies of lace bugs include parasitic wasps, predatory assassin bugs, lacewing larvae, lady beetles, jumping spiders, pirate bugs, and mites. These beneficial species may not appear in sufficient numbers until after lace bugs become abundant, but their preservation is an essential part of a long-term, integrated pest management program. To increase natural enemy abundance and reduce lace bug damage, grow a variety of flowering plant species and provide partial shade to shrub species that are not adapted to grow in full sun. If applying pesticides, choose nonpersistent, contact insecticides to minimize the adverse effects on beneficial predators and parasites.
