A few more details about Rhodopis are told in “The Histories” by Herodotus (Book 2, chapters 134, 135; each chapter is only about a paragraph long). Apparently she was a real-life person, although several details of her life may have been exaggerated and added to by legend and myth. Among other things, Herodotus makes the interesting claim that she was once the servant of the same master who had Aesop the fable-teller as a slave. Perhaps this is where she got her knack for storytelling. She was very popular with Egyptian men, and there is room for doubt if she ever was married to one of the Pharaohs.

Speaking of which, it's no wonder I consider myself lucky to prefer that particular version to this very day. Some of you may be thinking it's because of the Disney Princess franchise, but it's a lot more than that. It just so happens that this particular version marked a major milestone in the company's history by miraculously emerging from its first slump that was ushered upon due to World War II. In fact, it was the only slump in the company's history that happened during Walt's lifetime, meaning the next slump wouldn't be ushered upon until the late 60s with his passing. Speaking of Disney Princesses, it was during Moana's theatrical run when it was exactly half a century since that fateful moment occurred.

Do you know the original Grimm brothers story? It does not have a fairy godmother. Instead, Cinderella works the magic herself, with the help of a hazel rod planted on her mother's grave. And, cruel twist, the evil stepsisters cut off their toes to fit into the shoe, but two turtle-doves that have helped Cinderella before reveal it. Grimm's heroines often are much more self-confident than their Disney counterparts.

@amaliapursell

@@kkibela at this point in the Roman empire, and it's colonies, there was quite a bit of racism but it would be unrecognizable to racists today. For instance, the people from actual Rome did not consider themselves European and viewed the rest of Europe as inferior. Mind you, they also viewed north Africa as inferior. But they blamed it on climate. The people in the cold moist north were moronic and big which made them good soldiers, easily controlled. The people in the dry hot south were cunning and small, making great bureaucrats and accountants. Meanwhile, Rome was the "perfect" middle point. i don't think we can say "original" Cinderella, we can say an early version of cinderella's story or something similar. because stories similar to the Disney cinderella we know have been around in many different cultures in different times. it is possible that people from different parts of the world get the same idea, or it's possible for similar stories to have happened in real life. we describe these kinds of stories as Cinderella story, but that's because it's what we grew up with, and there's nothing wrong with that. nobody necessarily copied anyone.

The Rhodopis of the fairy tale is based on a real woman - The historical Rhodopis was not even Egyptian. She actually came from Thrace (modern Bulgaria). And finally, she never became a queen. The real reason why the historical Rhodopis was so famous? It was because she was the celebrity call girl of the ancient world ! So, like with Ares case(also a thracian character), it's a greek story with foreign characters, lol ! If the story is greek it doesn't mean the deities or character is greek ! Same happened with Apollo, he was originally a Trojan deity !

I take a lot of issue with Rhodopis being called the "original" Cinderella; "oldest known recorded" is much more accurate because the truth is, we will never know the original tale. Fairy tales descend from oral tradition, long before any sort of literacy became widespread and when any sort of record had to be entirely by hand. They were stories told by parents to children, around campfires, in taverns, or to pass the time on the road. And with each retelling, details can change or be added depending on the storyteller and local culture. Sometimes tales would split off and become different, sometimes two separate but similar tales from different regions would mix and combine into something new. And when the times would change, so would the stories to suit the views of the era. So it's frankly an impossible to ask to tell where or when these stories originated, but the fact that they've traveled and related to by so many different people of different cultures and times and survived to the modern day is honestly what makes them so special.

That's the one with the abusive family, but without a groom trying to identify her. There's another, where the abused stepdaughter is identified among her sisters by a prince (it's close to brothers Grimm's One-eye, Two-eyes and Three-Eyes, but the heroine is separate from those three).
@Mokiefraggle
@Mokiefraggle 2 года назад
I don't know if I'd call the story of Vasilisa the Beautiful a "Cinderella story." The only real connection there is the evil stepmother and stepsisters, and if you're working from the Brothers Grimm's version, you could call the presence of her magic doll from her deceased mother a connection, like Aschenputtel's hazel tree and holy doves. It's mostly just your typical Baba Yaga tale, where she can be benevolent, but just as often threatens the protagonist that she must complete a variety of nigh-impossible trials to earn her aid and favor, or else be the witch's supper. Still a fun story, though. Most "Cinderella stories" are considerably closer to Perrault's tale, or to the version told by the Brothers Grimm, in that there's the royal ball/festival that the protagonist wishes to attend, and is prevented from doing so by some antagonist (usually stepmother and -sisters). There's also always a lost slipper and a hunt for the only girl in the kingdom that fits the slipper, which is one of the most defining traits of a "Cinderella story." The story of Rhodopis, the story of Ye Xian, and all the other myths and fairy tales linked under this archetype all have some sort of "maiden that fits the slipper" facet.

I have always loved fairy tales, and Cinderella was my favorite. Over the last half century I have bought the many different versions of Cinderella in both books and movies. There is even an American Native version of this delightful romance. But imagine my surprise when I found the Egyptian version about Rhodopis. And it was on RU-vid. Naturally I did a search and FOUND THE BOOK, which I gave to my youngest granddaughter as a birthday gift. She loves fairy tales, too. LOL RACONTEUR, Thank you for sharing the story so others may realize this tale is even older than the French version. One more thing. I have seen the statement in several places that this is a true tale. Well, I did a search for the Pharaoh in this tale, but have not found him listed among 'any' Pharaoh. So, if anyone has a legitimate source regarding 'the Prince' in this tale, please share. Thanks.

I loved this story. For some reason, my spirit guides led me to this tale. I’m beginning to believe Rhodopis existed but was persecuted by others, and the eagle, was Zeus/Eye of Horus who chose to protect her because he saw from above the cruelty she endured. I struggle to believe Sappho’s account or the stories later that she was a sex worker by choice that lured men. No. If you were a slave. You were used against your will sexually, physically, emotionally- cruelly. Something about the pyramid in the middle of the Red Sea--where she’s supposedly buried, leads to more of the tale. If you examine the body of a grasshopper, a wheelbug, it is the exact replica of the Red Sea parted, the triangle above is Mt. Sinai but the pyramid lies in the Red Sea, where she’s supposedly buried. Thank you.

@branchestarot 2 года назад
Oh, don't be silly, now:) My fairy godmother gets up at dawn. 😜 You may find this odd or like an odyssey in itself but, RU-vid algorithms do not dictate my viewing. It’s much more enchanting coming out of the mouths of children first, followed by a song next then a cloud picture that leads to natural research, to finally, a new discovery. So, if a dragonfly befriends you in the garden, wants to escort you to school, take a stroll in nature, don’t question what is magical. Just enjoy it’s company. God bless, love and light and have a blessed morning. ✨🧚‍♂️♉️

Every culture has its own 'Cinderella' themed tale. The moral value of the story holds similar meanings; perseverance, patience, battle against evil/cruelness, justice will prevail, kindness, etc, very universal wisdom. Indonesia for example has a similar tale titled BAWANG MERAH & BAWANG PUTIH (literally translated into The Shallot & The Garlic). It has the elements of evil stepmother and sister (The Bad), the kind - innocent - beautiful yet oppressed sibling (The Good) and the prince (The Prize for the winner). I guess it is the beauty of the human creative minds to spread the values of universal goodness through the fairy tale which was then adapted through the culture of the local community at that time. I believe, it must be fascinating to find another version of similar theme in different cultures, creates a compilation out of it and admires the beauty of each local version.

It wasn't Horus who was the falcon. It was Hathor. Horus and Ra were both actually upset that Hathor had match made them. It use to be blasphemous for lighter skinned women to be the wife of a God or Pharoah. The Pharoah had to marry darker skinned women with dark hair. It was a law. A major rule. But Hathor approved her being his wife because they were actually meant to be together. She was the first wife of a Pharoah who was white skinned.

@heart_beat_s354
@heart_beat_s354 2 года назад
I thought the reality/ history was based on wealthy families that bound girl's feet. "Poor" or "common" families didn't do that. But also to control a female's movements. A girl can't walk far with "feet bound." Something like that.
@kaloarepo288
@kaloarepo288 2 года назад
@@heart_beat_s354 You are right -it was only the wealthy who could afford to do it -one of the few instances where poor people had the better deal!They also however,loved little feet that looked like pig's trotters.(A Chinese friend once explained to me)Thank God the practice stopped a long time ago.Apparently the glass slipper idea came from a mistranslation of the French(Charles Perrault version)where the French word "vere" which means squirrel fur is very similar to the French word for "glass" but the glass slipper version is much more romantic-but imagine how uncomfortable they would be.

The tale of Rhodopis is actually a Greek story, written by Strabo. It's not Egyptian in origin, although he set the story in Egypt. Also, Strabo's tale of Rhodopis differs slightly from the telling in this video, which appears to have been embellished quite a bit to make it fit better with the modern version.

In reality, the tale they continue to present as the "Egyptian Cinderella" has no Egyptian origin and, in its present version, appears nowhere in ancient literature. Strabo's version of the so-called "Egyptian Cinderella" has almost none of the elements of the popular modern-day version.
@robinlillian9471
@robinlillian9471 2 года назад
Just because there are multiple versions of the story doesn't mean they are identical. It's the ending that matters--the servant/slave girl who married the prince/Pharaoh. There are numerous examples of similar tales that spread all over the world, including the flood story that made it into the Bible.

@@robinlillian9471 It's just that Herodot who first wrote about Rhodopis never mentioned a prince/king or a shoe and Strabo claimed that she was not even called Rhodopis but Doricha or something. There is not even a consensus on whether they were talking about the same person or if they mixed up things and this story, as presented in the video, is mainly made up. It's likely based on a not very accurate retelling by Miller.
