I show you how to prepare an unusual but deadly bait in the form of my special recipe rice - and show how effective it can be with a short but packed session at a local pond.

Like the rice idea , and a very nice watch. Takes me back 50 years when I used to bag up on casters on local rivers . Wish I new about rice back then , much cheaper. I've had big catches of carp and Bream just lately on sardine paste, I mix 5 slices of bread crumb done in the blender, then I work in the sardines into the crumb leaving the sun flower oil in as well. Its abit brumbly to start with so I use abit to feed the swim then kneed the rest to give a nice paste. Very good bait hope this helps other readers. Thanks again.Gazza

Enjoyed the video. Many years ago (60+) I used rice a few times as a sort of loose feed for roach and dace. It was effective and let you save maggots for hookbait. It was mentioned in the Coarse Fishing Baits book in the "How to Catch Them" series - my bibles as a boy and still interesting today. Plenty of advice in that particular book on how to breed your own maggots, how to collect earwigs and woodlice for bait and how to correctly prepare brains for bait. Hours of amusement! A word of warning - some of the dyes recommended are now considered by many to be dangerous and possibly carcinogenic.

Top-notch video, my friend, and great idea! Just subbed to the channel! I've tried "out -of- the- box" ideas for content myself on my channel, but it never seems to attract the same attention as just hauling fish😂. It's good to see someone else who rarely seems to get more than a couple of hours in for a fishing session! Well done 👍👍👍

Used this for many a year. I generally add some red colouring bought from supermarket...but better dyes are I think in my view come from those in shops...just saying... On rivers I'll throw the rice way down stream from where I want to fish with a bit of hemp or any other seed that you fiddle about with that can soak in a colour and additive. hemp/halibut, cheese garlic flavourings are my general favourites....then fish 50 yards orso upstream where I threw the rice in. Maybe a point I could actually catch more fish without it!... but I feel confident using it. And that is the point...fish with what you want. Nice video!

Just subbed. Used to use rice years and years ago. Forgot about it, fell in trap of commercial baits that cost a fortune ! Simple cheap baits, like rice, bread, potatoe pellets , a lot of easy baits we used 60 years ago. Well done and thanks for jogging my memory.😊

A great video with plenty of tips for new anglers. Rice, wheat and pearl barley etc. have been used as hook bates for ages. I certainly used them back in the 1950s and still do, have never tried colouring or adding flavours though. Nowadays anglers are far to reliant on modern fancy commercial bates. One of the best baits for big roach for example is silk weed or in autumn elder berries, when I started fishing you had to get all of your own baites, maggots etc. weren't available commercially. A worm will catch anything! Tight lines.

German anglers fishing for bream in Ireland use to fish with it rather than a gallons of casters in the 80s on the erne waterways..

Yep, it's great for bulking out. I would have loved to have fished in Ireland back in the glory days when the likes of Kevin Ashurst were plundering the huge shoals of roach. I was a bit too young at the time.

Love the video. Great to use simple baits like this. I notice with my Chickens how they love rice. You often feed them boiled rice with added vitamins or yogurt when they're not well and won't take their normal feed. Fish could be similar.

Hy John,,top video mate,,takes me back 40 plus years ago,,home made baits were the thing to do,,and for me personally is a big part of the magic of fishing,👍my particular favourite was fried luncheon meat in lard turmeric and beef oxo cubes,,punched or torn off pieces🤫another blast from the past Bennett’s of Sheffield was the only mail order tackle dealer late 70s early 80s,👍We could go on for ever on this magical pastime, anyway John keep them comin and tightlines,,💪🎣🥊

It's a very old1979 formula. Now you can use wheat flour or midha, mix it with rice bran, or when the rice is boiling take the water (kongee) mix it with 4 parle G biscuit, if you want it strong use white of an egg, mix well, and fill your bag, with fish. Try my stunt? All the best. Vin..

Commonly used for baiting up in Japan - can be made into a paste Japanese rice is different to the varieties commonly eaten here. Japanese rice is 'sticky' so one squeeze and it forms a ball but will probably break down in the water. Worth experimenting with.

I've used rice (along with hemp, pearl barley and wheat) in my feed for a few years now. I usually cook it by boiling with the addition of turmeric and/or paprika in the water... My usual feed consists of breadcrumb with the addition of rice/hemp/wheat and barley plus salt, strong plain flour, blood&bone fertiliser (pre mad cow disease I used fresh blood from a local abattoir), Vitalin and porridge oats.

Brilliant stuff 😄 I've definitely used molehill soil - can be good for canals and perch in particular. I think the only equivalent of a wine gum would be the odd time I've used marshmallows on the hook when floater fishing.
