This video talks about the intercropping of legumes in rice cultivated under the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). Intercropping leads to an increase in the nutrient uptake in the rice plants and better plant growth. The field experiments in Kashmir resulted in higher yields and increase in the net income of farmers by about 57%.

Very impressive results Tavseef! I have a few questions for you. What does SRI-w stand for and why did you leave it out on the yield slide? How come the labour for weeding is so high with CFR? Isn't the whole point of flooding to eliminate labour for weeding? The bean plants in the filed trial looks a bit small, maybe there are bean varieties that are better adjusted to the seemingly wet conditions in the field? How do you explain the weed suppression of the beans. Surely those tiny leaves don't shade out the weeds.

Hi. Thank you for your comment. SRI-w stands for the weedy control SRI treatment. The treatment in which weeds were allowed to grow. This treatment was done to see the effect of intercropping on weed infestation. Reporting the yield of SRI-w treatment would have a misrepresentation of SRI. Regarding labour requirements in CFR: Yes, the whole stated purpose of flooding is to pre-empt the need for weeding but weeds still grow and need either manual weeding or weedicide application or both. Hence the labour requirement. Regarding beans: Yes, we are trying to make conditions for the growth of beans more optimal in the follow up experiments. Will keep updating on this channel. The suppression of weeds due to intercropping can be explained by inter-specific competition, competition between the weed species and beans. The role of shade isn't a major one in this case. Kindly advise the spacing between rice plants (to accomodate the bean plants in between)

Based on SRI practices, the spacing can be 25-30 cm, which can accomodate the bean plants: www.mdpi.com/2073-4395/11/5/1010

Hi Tavseef, this is inspirational. I am from south india and going to try something similar in a month (I can't go with SRI spacing because manual planting is not feasible due to labour issues and don't have access to SRI planting machine). Any suggestion on the legume I can use for the wetlands. I am thinking of horse gram or mung. Thanks!

Hello. If you are going with the SRI water management practice, most of the legumes should be fine. I saw that rajma and mung beans grow as an intercrop.
