i get that xxl is behind the times, but if you aint tryna freestyle or cypher AT ALL, dont even submit to be a part of the freshman list. if its so behind the times and losing relevancy, then just have a career without it 🤦🏾♂️

Previous waves of underground talent knew how to work on their craft to improve. The soundcloud wave had rappers setting up shows to grow a natural audience and stage presence. And most could do some type of freestyle. its the tiktok effect imo. Where its just numbers that matter and not if your shit is authentic/quality.
all i’ma say is, a lot of these cyphers you end up hearing are verses from old songs or songs that haven’t dropped yet as the video was talking about, so people aren’t really “freestlyling” , however it’s a double edged sword man, cuz there’s also truth to how it’s just a cypher and you can just spit some shit you wrote beforehand 🤷🏻♀️

i agree with lucki. mfs create their music differently these days and got different styles so it’s weird to expect mfs to be on some wayne or drake shit when asked to freestyle and just bc you don’t it doesn’t mean someone isn’t talented in music. it’s just a whole different creative process for ppl these days. i made songs in hs on sum unserious shit and i wrote those bc that’s my style. this kinda thing will become more and more common as the years go on.
