There's a dude in Atlanta called the "Trap King" who traps stray cats to help home them and tries to help folks be more ok with black men who like cats.

I was just thinking, this story is kinof a false-equivalency because the cats are rich and poor through no fault of their own. Unless some cats disenfranchise other cats to enrich themselves, and some cats frame other cats that get too powerful

And who are the humans who save scat supposed to be? Social welfare? (Not making a joke)

You are looking really deep into this... Somehow this is a commentary on Cat privilege and the Underclass. The only way to advance in this world is if you're adopted, like Little Orphan Annie or Arnold, Willis and Webster. lol **** Ok. lets see where this goes... I think the story works because there is a beginning, middle and a (happy) ending. As an exercise, if you want to look through that lens, to assume there is some social commentary going on, you might say that the narrator is God and he/she is looking out for Scratch. Scratch, from her position, has no way of knowing the privileges that other cats may/may not have. She is simply centered on her existence/survival. The narrator says, everyone has a place to belong. We as an audience emphasize with the plight, but no one takes pity on them. The humans don't see her as more than what she is. A cat in need of a home. The kid isn't Princess Charming. The cat isn't being kidnapped or even forced to do anything that it ordinarily wouldn't do other than be a cat. Love makes the world a better place. now doesn't it? And Bill's voice makes me want to eat some Jello.

@@reelblack Replying 3 years late, but hey, why not 🙃 Re: OP’s point, I don’t think the rich/poor thing is a false equivalence to people. The cats would just represent children, who are also born rich or poor through no fault of their own. This is a component of the term “privilege,” which can also include race/ethnicity, sex/gender, and more. As to @reelback’s point, I don’t think the book was intentionally written to express that level of detail as far as social/class commentary. It’s a children’s book after all. My take is that it attempts a broader message more easily digestible by a small child, something akin to “wealth disparity exists, and here’s what it’s like on both sides. Perhaps it is wise to consider the privilege that some have, and what it provides them, as well as the difficulties others have, how it affects them, and how it’s different than that life of privilege and comfort.” At the end, the story highlights that occasionally being given food and attention by the workers is nice, but it’s not the same as being somebody’s cat. And when Scat is finally adopted, it’s into a family with a house, neither of which are shown to be rich or opulent (nice house tho!). Most notably, what Scat finally receives from them is food, shelter, and a name (and, we assume, love), all basic life necessities. We don’t see her getting pampered or receiving any of the over the top privileges we see the rich cats get. So if anything, I’d say that’s the moral: being rich and pampered may be nice, and it’s certainly better than being dirt poor, but what really matters is having your needs met, being seen, and feeling/being part of something bigger than you :)
