I was hopeful that he wasn't actually in hell but in purgatory, bc I've heard that ppl in hell don't care about those on earth.

A priest recently spoke on this and stated that the church fathers actually taught that, given there is no love in hell, the real reason the rich man wanted to get message to his family about the existence of hell was because he knew that it would only increase his own sufferings when they got there with him because they all helped each other get there. So his motive was still purely self-focussed
