It is exactly the same thing. The new rich are dressed for the present time. It is not like the old rich were wearing medieval robes like the nobles! Very weird!
Nah, today rich ppl show off on social media and lack manners/etiquette Edit- Yall stop with the "if rich people had social media back then comments" ugh, I'm talking about manners, you can show off subtly without being tacky and pretty people, etiquette and manners have nothing to do with wealth. All people back then specially rich people had manners and etiquette. You can be rich and mannerless, you can be poor but well mannered, its just a matter of choice.
No, it’s not now and then. Old money means people around now but the moneys been around for a long time. Old money doesn’t show off. It drives older cars and has its sweaters darned.
I don’t think they were showing off to the poor anything close to how much they do now, social media has taken showing off and injected it with steroids!
As somebody who goes to a private school and has met the children of these “old money” families, the main difference is they live In the countryside surrounded by old people with horrible internet connection. I know the posh, exclusive country clubs type of kids and they’re basically just normal kids but a lot more sheltered. No added class, although they tend to talk a little more formally, as In they use bigger words when speaking colloquially and therefore sound more educated. I meant sheltered as In more ignorant to the world’s problems, more carefree and they spend little time thinking about the crueler things In the world they hear about compared to the kids their age I know from state schools. @@akennan3817 Money isn't made from setting up charities... except in government. That's how today's politicians get votes, get elected, and then get rich. People became millionaires and billionaires in This Country by seeing a need and/or having an idea, working their azzes off to make it happen, and taking high risks to get their products/services to the public, who then paid for the products/services in great numbers; hence, making those who put everything on the line millionaires and billionaires. They then passed along the bulk their wealth to their children and grandchildren so they could have a better life and not have the same struggles as they did. Just like most parents who came to America. They were just more successful at it. After making their money, Then the millionaires and billionaires Gave A Lot Of Money to fund charities, other businesses, educational institutions, orphanages, and other things to help people. I had a good friend back in college who’s old money, one of the rich of the richest families in my country. Buying Chanel jackets was like going to Zara for her 😂 the boutique manager (idk what they’re called, sorry!) was her SA. But one thing about how she and her family shopped, from what I can recall, is that they didn’t really like the brand logo stuff. They liked the more obscure, collector pieces that (to my very limited knowledge) only people who really follow Chanel (or other designer brands), would recognize. She despised the CC Chanel logo, let alone the Gucci ones. Her father’s watch collection was insane, vintage Patek Philippe’s everywhere 😅😅 but they’re super generous they built schools and housings for the less fortunate so I respect them a lot.

So what if we did? At least we don’t waste our time posting everything about our lives on social media and we like to stay private. New money lacks class. Old money is the epitome of elegance and class. Yes, this trend is quite idiotic, people are acting like the actual old money would pay any heed.
Oh yeah, they got lucky in a crypto boom, o a stock of an old money company owner… how better… or maybe they’re bloody rappers profiting of of poor blak stupidity
@@Orioleexzzbut their point makes sense. New money made their own money so it makes sense rhat they'd wanna show it off,but for old money,it's just great great grandaddy's blood money,so,why show it off, being rich Is just normal to them.
the difference between old rich and new rich is that old rich is effortlessly elegant and distinguished aristocratic feeling and the new rich is being a walking advertisement for big fashion moguls
@@prelude5905 fashion moguls and designer brands weren’t that much of a thing until the 20th Century, which is like just yesterday in European history. Old money here is sometimes literally over a thousand years of family history, and real aristocrats never mingled with common folks. They had their own traditions, conventions, etiquette. Etc, and most of that is still passed down to old money kids these days, that’s why they appear to be so different. It’s not the clothes or their possessions, it’s how they carry themselves. No money in the world will make you accurately mimic aristocracy if you’re not born into or integrated into that society.
@weird One I agree but I just feel like we generalize old rich and new rich too much due to the rise in social media, they are still very similar, there are still new rich people who don't fit the stereotype and often mimic traditions of ppl with old money trying to make a family name of sorts. And fashion part still doesn't make sense to me cuz ppl with new money still dress like ppl with old money , the style is very common with rich ppl
Old money people don't show off much on social media. They like to keep it to themselves. Rather than parading what they buy, they cultivate themselves with sports, books, and other experience.
Even if there was social media, I would imagine some of them ( maybe ) would show their lifestyle, but not all of them. It's called class. When you know you don't need to flex and wear designer clothes & accesories from head to toe yet still manage to look ✨ elegant ✨
That’s just the difference between America and England 💀 Edit: Y’all are missing my point and pulling the “I’m eNgLiSh” card- I’m English too 💀 If you want to be picky, here let me explain. This is the difference between American rich and English *royalty* ok? I don’t see many rich English people because I don’t live in an area where that’s a thing. So stop replying going “oh well I’m English and that’s not true” or “no that’s wrong English people are like that too it’s not just America!” I would also like to add, as someone who does horse riding, quite a lot of the “Old” pictures are simply people wearing dressage or showjumping gear. Nothing special or rich. Now sorry I upset all of the people who want to start arguments on the internet, but I would like to not have my replies being flooded anymore thank you.
Crazy thing is I knew a girl who came from old wealth. You could barely tell though with how nice she was, and she dressed normally. People only knew she was rich because of her brother a few years ahead.
most rich ppl actually dressed normally. but if you look at it properly, most of them are probably still using an expensive designer brand that aren't flashy

“Designer brands” are for the nouveau riches and middle class. Old money wears camo hunting clothes to eat lunch (in the dining room) before they go out dove shooting in the back. Old money is also cheap, how they hang on to it.

Fetishing ‘old money’ basically translates too: “I wish we could go back to being open about how our grandparents used to own slaves instead of being appropriately shamed out of the limelight.”
Fetishizing rich people in general and putting two types of billionaires whose only difference is the presence of generational wealth against each other is very icky :/
The differences (besides old money’s large estates, security personnel, staff, education, etc) are their circle of people/networks. Old money types are very private about who they consider part of the club. In fact privacy and exclusivity is key to lifestyle differences. Old money may interact with anyone but you’ll never be included into their social network if you’re not part of their private world.

@@peaceandhumanity5705 LOL As with anyone really…some were “stingy” and some were very generous. Interesting thing I noticed is that while it’s true that they don’t flaunt their status or necessarily “wear their wealth” they do drop hints about their own or their families pedigree and wealth…such as they might mention (while seemingly drunk) their trust funds, private hospitals funded by their family’s foundation, very expensive art bought or sold, family spats or arguments over “rare books” and of course talk about the dreadfully boring boarding school they attended in Europe, they might mention (also while a little drunk) how their dad dipped his toes investing in some Hollywood movies and lost a mini fortune, and of course on occasion show you photos of…their family’s (extended family and friends) annual vacation to some exotic location like climbing the mountains in Tibet, or attending their mom’s birthday party where all their friends and family gathered in someone’s Chateau in Venice…etc etc
People forget that these mansions/castles are rarely for sale nowadays or they’re seen as governmental property and you can’t renovate it without approval (most get denied). It’s historic monuments now, back then it was simply a home.
Many are still family homes; especially in England which still has a Royal Family and a fully preserved aristocracy. For example, Castle Howard (featured in this video using the promo shot for the TV series “Brideshead Revisited”), is still lived in by the Howard Family; and has since building began in 1699. I just visited Holkham Hall recently for their “Christmas by Candlelight” tour, and the descendants of those who built that are also still living there; and use *every* single room (when tours are not on of course). The guide even said that when they have people over for parties, the guests actually use the state bedrooms, and sleep in the huge beds that are original to the house (surrounded by master paintings and priceless tapestries and furniture).
@@pneron2032 i really wonder who would even buy those castles, like the news often said they worth that much but what is the point of being valued that much but no liquidation like there is no one buy them

Not really. In my country there are a lot of newly rich entrepreneurs who are not involved in show business but are founders of skincare/makeup/diet products and they flaunt their expensive cars and designer bags n outfits on social media worst than actual celebrities who work in the entertainment industry. There's always that ig post of them flexing off stacks of money to their followers lol.
This is ridiculous. You can cosplay as an old money girl as much as you want they will never accept you. The only way to be accepted is to be born into money.

It would be great , but uk as an Asian and someone whose ancestors were part of the British colony, you mean to say - colonial money , because that’s how industrial revolutions in London were funded
If I understand the visual difference correctly, the rich people earlier had an aesthetic where wearing certain fabrics and silhouettes, and having custom pieces was the way to show your financial status (because the process of fabric producing was way harder and more expensive in comparison with today’s market). Today’s rich people dress in the clothes where the brand is more important than the clothing piece itself or it’s quality. Also, maybe the social aspect of this is that before it was about the quality and quantity shown to the group of associates, and now it’s more about showing everyone what you can afford. Hence, the rich people’s competitors earlier was their class only, and now they openly idolise themselves in mass view because that’s how we live.

i forgot who said this but someone said u'd know the diff between someone who came from old vs. new money. the latter are more concerned with showing off their wealth via designers from head to toe while the former usually don't and are more "confident" in wearing casual yet still expensive clothes that just don't have the brand name on it or aren't obviously "designer"
I watched this show on Netflix and I heard that the main difference between old-money and new-money is that when they are at the restaurant the new money would order the most expensive bottle of wine and the old money would order the oldest one. I like how old designer wear wasn’t so flashy with the brand’s name everywhere. The rich could recognises a shirt/dressed just based on the fabric, the cut or even the style. Which made so much more classy and expensive looking. Now That Gucci stuff is branded everywhere and it became sooo cheap looking
I think they are just saying, they prefer that older upper class style. And honestly I agree, and I'd always rather dress classy than trying to be a barbie doll all the time.
Same thing! They just exchange their mansion to modern high rise apartments/villas, their clothes still needlessly expensive, their horses and automobiles to sport cars and private jet.

Old money takes a tight family and time to make. It's quite simple. A man has a trusted son. He gets the highest paying job he can get. He takes out a loan and gives the loaned money to his son. It is no longer a loan once in his son's hands. He waits 7 years, and the debt is no longer visible. Repeat. Multiple people in a very large family doing this can get super rich in over 14 years.
for people saying it's the same thing they just dress differently. nope the thing is back then the rich people had a class and even middle class people had good etiquettes and were elegant and they would never go around having physical alterations with their own siblings unlike celebs now (everybody knows who I'm talking about)
