‘Ruffian Dick’ - the polyglot Victorian brawler who searched for the source of the Nile, entered Mecca in disguise and got a spear in the face for his troubles.
Hello and welcome to the Odysseus Files, the RU-vid channel that loves to dive into the lives and adventures of some of the most fascinating soldiers and explorers in history. Today, we are going to talk about Sir Richard Francis Burton, the British soldier, explorer and scholar who opened Victorian eyes to the unknown wonders of the world through his travels and explorations in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. He was the first European to discover Lake Tanganyika and to penetrate hitherto-forbidden Muslim cities. He also translated some of the most famous works of literature from Arabic, Persian, and Sanskrit, such as The Arabian Nights, The Kama Sutra, and The Perfumed Garden. In this video, we will explore his early life, his military career, his daring journeys, his literary achievements, and his legacy.

ODYSSEUS FILES is a RU-vid channel dedicated to showcasing primarily military history content (plus certain other topics) in short documentary form, featuring interesting and quirky characters and stories from the late 19th Century on through the 1st and 2nd World Wars to the present.
It is not always possible to find 100% accurate footage to illustrate these cinematic short films, but where possible ODYSSEUS FILES strives to keep it authentic. Background music will always attempt to provide appropriate emotional mood.
Topics and content are thoroughly researched and portrayed in their historical context for both educational and entertainment purposes. We try our best to be accurate in terms of the data in our short films, but are not experts in all areas and are always learning new things, so if we get something wrong - please feel free to contact us. Also if you have an idea you believe may fit the scope of our channel - again - do not hesitate to let us know.

Would that we produce such men again, though there's neither the tolerance nor support for them at present.

Never heard of him until I came across his burial monument. You know he must have been a wild man for that much love and respect from his wife, to have that mausoleum commissioned for them! Heck, I'd love for a monument like that for myself rather than deep under the dirt!
