Richard Dawkins Confronts a Christian Extremist!

The Reverend Michael Bray is a leading advocate of murdering abortion doctors. He also takes biblical literalism to the extreme of advocating the death penalty for adultery and homosexuality. His friend and coconspirator, the Reverend Paul Hill, was executed for murdering an abortion doctor and his bodyguard. Bray strongly defends Hill’s action and thinks he’s now being rewarded in heaven. Bray himself served 46 months of a 10-year jail sentence for conspiracy and possession of illicit explosives. What follows is an audio recording of a long conversation I had with him in a public park in Colorado. He struck me as a deeply confused individual but at the same time sincere, a mind addled and perverted by religious faith, walking evidence of Steven Weinberg’s well-known aphorism, which I quote at the end of this recording: for good people to do evil things, it takes religion.

How did he even survive in prison? I haven't had so much as a speeding ticket in 20yrs & I'd have had a 'problem' with him immediately. Imagine you make it through medical school, you help, you heal, you serve your community, you're given the title "doctor", which to thinking people is a far more respectful title than 'reverend'. I do applaud Mr Dawkins for allowing the "cultist without a cult" Bray to expose the lunacy & cowardice of his efforts. If Bray was actually paid for this, however, I take that back. To see a grown man try to explain how he knows the nature & origin of the universe where true genius doesn't, and the laughably childish fantasy world he's trying desperately to believe - I'm actually relieved that the proceeding generations simply won't put up with this - not just Bray's sick fantasy, but they're far better informed, and less susceptible to gullibility. Bray will have his moment, no matter how much of himself he throws into his "it's true 'cause the bible says so" attitude. As a thinking adult, everyone eventually comes to that crossroads. Deep down, they know it's not true. No matter how much they want it to be, no matter how lost they might feel as they initially cope with the reality. I hope they're given leniency as they 'transition' to non-believers & see the positive side of it all. How *should* people respond to an utter silence that is deaf to our every dose of pain for what, 300k years? How is it that we call someone who wouldn't dare say his name, "god"? In our species' entire history, this entity has not once made a single sound. God is a 'he', he loves us, and the punishment for not loving him back is eternal fire. Watch the christian expression when they describe 'hell'. The revel in its torments. We are to deny our intellects, pretend he's there, believe those are his words in the bible/on stone tablets, punish 'sinners' accordingly. The 'virgin' thing is what first got me to look at smarter scenarios. Jesus had a father & mother. They had a baby. If you don't believe that he was conceived naturally, I do hope you find comfort in this - but I do not.

This man got a sentence of 10 years for assisting two murders and served only a couple of them. I wonder what the relatives of the murdered might think about the justice system in that nation. The power of religion is so strong in there that it can convince society that this man has been rehabilitated , while he clearly still makes public his criminal ideology, basing it on old scriptures which don't have any real value today. "In 75 years, genocidally atheistic Communism was responsible for 100 million deaths"--Harvard University Press, "The Black Book of Communism" "Of the 1,763 wars dating to 300 BCE, religion (other than Islam) was the impetus of 61." (The Encyclopedia of War, Vols. I-III) THAT'S 3.5%, though contains OVER HALF earth's population! The 20th century alone had wars consuming 136 million lives. WWs I&II were the product of leaders: Churchill, Stalin, Hitler, Tojo, FDR, Kaiser Wilhelm, Lloyd George, Clemenceau, Wilson, Mussolini. NOT ONE advanced their aggressions predicated upon RELIGIONS of any kind, sect, denomination... BUT...'Religion is the Root of All Evil'! The Council of Nicea originated institutional hospital/infirmary, education, indigent care. It is THE DIRECT LINEAL ANTECEDENT of those social causes today. WHY NEVER FACTS from the Dawkins of the world for their libels such as "Root of All Evil"?! ONLY the religious are so nakedly, provably libelously, gleefully bigotedly smeared. NEVER would the sanctimonious Dawkins DREAM of lying similarly about BLACKS, WOMEN, JEWS... It is done purely to declare his smarmy, self-aggrandizing purity... read: SUPERIORITY! Still is. Each and every miscarriage is an abortion by the "god." It could have just prevented a conception instead of planning it to occur and then planning for the fetus to die.

Thanks Richard, you really expose the ideocracy in these people. What scares me is the evilness, the lack of compassion and humanity. PS He's actually hilariously stupid, but it's a too serious subject to be comedy, many gets hurt by these prophets when they get exploited in their cults.

Bray speaks so gently and confidently and, barring the topic of conversation, would seem a kind man. How terrifying. Condolences to his 11 children... What a truly dangerous psychopath. Thank you, Dawkins, for showing the world who this man is and allowing him to convict himself with his own words.

If you need the death penalty to stop you from committing adultery then you shouldn't be in a committed relationship in the first place!!! Bray's world would be horrific. 'The Handmaids Tale' at its very worst. I think he is a psychopath.

Richard uses the term 'taking the law into your own hands' incorrectly. Quite explicitly, the term means upholding and enforcing the law ourselves, whereas he used it to describe someone doing the very opposite: committing murder. They did not take the law into their own hands, they broke it.

Thanks Dr Dawkins for the interview. It explained how the believers get trapped in the beliefs created by religion. Beliefs created in children get hardwired into the brain, which can not be changed in adulthood. Philosopher Frederich Nietzsche was born in t a pious Christian family, but became atheist.
