Aired August 18, 2010 on Channel 4 -
The number of faith schools in Britain is rising. Around 7,000 publicly funded schools - one in three - now has a religious affiliation.
As the coalition government paves the way for more faith-based education by promoting 'free schools', the renowned atheist and evolutionary biologist Professor Richard Dawkins says enough is enough.
In this passionately argued film, Dawkins calls on us to reconsider the consequences of faith education, which, he argues, bamboozles parents and indoctrinates and divides children.
The film features robust exchanges with former Secretary of State for Education Charles Clarke, Head of the Church of England Education Service Reverend Janina Ainsworth, and the Chair of the Association of Muslim Schools, Dr Mohammed Mukadam.
It also features insights from child psychologists and key players in faith education as well as insights from both parents and pupils.
Dawkins also draws on his own personal history as a father, arguing that the government must stop funding new faith schools, and urges society to respect a child's right to freedom of belief.

This video really shows us how great a child educator Richard Dawkins can be. It's refreshing to see him not debate fundamentalists all the time hahaha

The ending with the children questioning Dawkins about the origins of things was beautiful. I teared up: it's great to see the nature of the world done justice.

Richard Dawkins gives me hope. He empowers me to not be beaten down and discouraged by all the people that are full of shit. He shows me that it is possible to make a difference and that you need to keep trying. As Lawrence Krauss said "change is only a generation away".

Dawkins really is an amazing man, i knew i was a atheist when i was about 7-8 yrs old, but i was never sure what to believe in. i was lost and always looking for something to believe in. i was confused untill my teen years i pretended to be religious cuz every one i knew was religious, but deep down in my heart i knew it was all lies. when i was about 18 i came across Prof. Dawkins views and it made everything clear for me, now i know i don't have to believe in anything but the truth. now i think logically and make all my decisions based on humanity rather than the fear of god. Thank you Prof. Dawkins you changed my life for all the good reasons. and yes we need to put our new generations in non faith based schools. well i know i would because i wouldn't want my kids to go through what i went.

I know how you feel. I recently understood that I am a nontheist (apathetic agnostic to be clearer) and now I feel like a betrayer and feel like I am going to go to hell. Odd, since I see through religious bull now. I am in desperate need of help on how to trump this irrational fear. Do you have any?
@robinkhaira1
@robinkhaira1 8 лет назад
Hayley bourgault no i dont have ny fear any more, only fear that i do have it that i don't want to hurt anyone. and its hard to do the right thing all the time, but i am trying, but the world is crystal clear to me now. ever since i took that religious blind fold off, i can see all the bull in my religion and all others, now i dont worry about going in to heaven, all i worry about is making the world a better place for our new generations. Hayley this is almost like a faith fall, you just gotta trust your gutts and do it, once you do you ll realise how much you have been missing on life because of religion and god.

I still go to a Catholic school, and they completely force religion down your throat. They tell you they encourage open minds and yet there is a constant tension, because if you questioned their beliefs they would punish you. The subject students care the least about at the school is religion, so in exams one time people kept on whistling. The head of religion at the school looked like he was having a panic attack when he was getting basically no response from students when he was saying we have to respect the school's religious beliefs. They encourage free thinking then tell you what you have to think.

I agree with what he said near the end. When I was little, I assumed my teachers knew everything in the world. every fact that existed, and I assumed my parents knew even more. whenever children want to know anything, they'll ask the nearest adult and assume they're right. I was genuinely shocked, as were 30 other children when our teacher told us she didn't actually know everything in the world. we simply hadn't comprehended that was the case. so imagine people with that view being told by adults that God is real. If another child said 2+2=4 but an adult said it was 3, if this was at the start of their mathematical teaching, the children would believe the adult in most cases, just because they're an adult. religion should not be exposed to anyone until they have reached a stage of mental maturity to deal with it. I think the numbers in religions would plummet if this happened, and religions know this, and will fight it to the very end. pathetic.

One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen is Richard telling the girl at the end that no one knows for sure and you have to ask what the evidence is. The greatest gift that you can give a child is to teach them to think critically.

My parents raised me to ask questions. They always said, "Einstein was so smart because he asked a lot of questions and then looked for answers." Little did my somewhat religious mother know, I would ask questions and get answers, but the answers I got were not always answers that aligned with her beliefs.

For me this program makes perfect sense. I was raised in a religious household, but attended publicly financed school where I learned science, uncensored history, and read literature that was not filtered to adhere to religious views of one set of parents over another. I do not understand why some people believe that everything has a divine purpose. In my case he preaches to the choir. Parents and preachers fear questions. I came to believe religion is an impediment to knowledge.

This is beautiful!!!!!! I love the part where the little girl says "how did the dinosaurs die" and the Richard gives a scientific explanation but then very wisely and rationally says "but nobody really knows for certain". I love that. Just beautiful!!!! That is the way you answer a child's question. First, you may give an explanation as long as you explain WHY you personally have come to that conclusion about that answer. But then you must encourage them to think for themselves.

A child I was co teaching stated that god isn't real. Another child said yes he is and called to the head teacher saying so and so said god isn't real. The teacher said to the fist child don't say that it isn't nice. This left the second child sitting there with the most smug look on his face. It was devastating to see and I took the first child aside and let him know he was just as right and it had nothing to do with being nice. I later mentioned to the teacher that the other child saying god is real is just as "not nice" if not criminal in its fraudulence.

The least scene was heartwarming, but based on how much I saw the kids fidgeting, I wonder how much they understood of what he said. Do they know what the word evidence means? Don't get me wrong, Dawkins's heart is in the right place, I just think that that assembly might have been a little more appropriate for middle and high school students. I wonder how much of our basic education we forget when we reach adulthood. It should be worth noting that it is never bad to have a childhood curiosity about the natural world, even as an adult. The moment we shun curiosity, is the moment we lose ourselves, and of course religion plays a role in that, by substituting a child's curiosity with preconceptions and dogma.

The work of the psychiatrist is fascinating. It seems to me that children are naturally inclined to use inductive reasoning (pattern recognition), and since everything around them is taught to be created for a purpose, the next step is to assume that natural things also exist for a reason and thus demand a creator as well.

You can tell whether a person is smart by their answers. You can tell whether they are wise by their questions. The basis of all understanding is "why". So please teachers. So please parents. When a child asks "why" Answer them honestly, with evidence and encourage them to challenge you. For example: Do not tell them not to steal because it is wrong. Tell them why stealing is wrong, and they will never steal.

Your children are not your property. You are their steward. It is not your right to teach your children nonsense and garbage that will cripple their minds to critical thinking. Teach them to understand the world and to ask questions and think critically. If you want to teach them religious view atop that, by all means. But don't you dare teach them a disrespect for evidence and facts.

An argument people could use against Rich is that Rich had a religious upbringing but still became Richard Dawkins. Plenty of those kids are asking questions internally, but they're wise enough to know there are some questions they cannot ask their teachers without getting in trouble. My fam is Jewish. As a kid, I remember sitting in the pews at temple and thinking, We don't believe this stuff literally (do we), so what do we really believe? (As so my agnosticism was seeded.)

I live in Washington DC and we need a "Pantheon" similar to the one in Paris, for our greatest scientific/free thinkers. Christopher Hitchens an English born American, made his home in DC, so he'd be in the Pantheon as would Carl Sagan, Sam Harris, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Barack Obama (closet agnostic), Daniel Dennett, John Nash, Jared Diamond, Alfred Kinsey and many more. These humans were known atheists and agnostics, and Obama wrote in his book that he was "raised in an atheist household."
