I really appreciate the honesty of the hobby from both your points of view. From a seller to a buyer your perspectives are transparent and honest, thanks guys. Keep it up!
Thank you guys for another great show.. Richard I enjoy you talk and look at our history and I too I’m looking for that book, but want to find it in the wild… hahha.. John, thank you for your service..
Great discussion on racism in the Golden Age Books. I personally would NEVER spend my hard earned money on those types of books as a black man, but like Richard, the “All Negro Comics” is especially interesting since it was done by people of color. I actually hate that era of books and keep a lot of money in my pocket because of that. I really enjoy your views on comics and that you collect what you love. Thats all that matters in my opinion. One mans grail is another mans trash! Great show again!
I'll always remember that Daredevil 196 cover with Wolverine since his claws were drawn wrong. I still remember seeing it for the first time and thinking "what the hell is happening here?"
I look forward to meeting you when you come to Baltimore. Our area has some great youtubers in our area including Automatic Comics, Longboat Love Affair, Cool Stuff Collectibles as well as myself. Should be an interesting gathering of the community if we get some of the Northeast Guys too.
Richard asked what series I went after following the Adventure Comics run and that’s a bit complicated. Two years ago, I inherited a large amount of money and started filling in runs and all out collecting series. So I went after runs going back to the Silver Age including Action & Superman. Also finished a lot of Dell runs (Bugs Bunny going back to the Four Color issues, etc). I no longer really need any more superhero comics so I’ve been collecting a lot of humor comics going back to the late Golden Age. Again, it would take a lot if space listing them all. Love the show. It’s the only show where guys my age just talk about how we love comics. 👍🏻👍🏻
Crusader Rabbit: many happy childhood memories from 1960s Sydney (we eventually got US content but it took a while). We must be aware of the past and learn its lessons. That's why books like All-Negro Comics are so important, it is a piece of history as Richard says but it's vital to know the context of that comic too (and of Friday Foster #1). Not that we here in Australia are innocent, I have collections of old Aussie comic strips in which Indigenous Australians are depicted appallingly and totally unrealistically; even in the 1970s we were taught at school that Aboriginal people all lived traditional lives in the Outback as hunter-gatherers despite the fact that many lived urban lives in the cities. Thanks for the thoughtful discussion Richard. Love the cover of Sub-Mariner #57; Bill Everett brought a renewed sense of purpose and direction when he took over the title, maybe it gave him a renewed sense of commitment that flowed through into his output.
Thank you Richard, your putting ‘All Negro Comics’ in its historical context and giving us both its origin story & how important the title is to you was really moving. 🥹🙏🏼
😂 I wonder the same thing about Wolverine’s claws in that Daredevil book! I was told that the colorist botched their job and the artist intended Wolverine’s palm facing up in a fist (holding the shirt from the claws). The “thumb” was intended to be the color of the shirt as if it were bunched up.
Another great episode and loved the convention recap! Living in Akron, I'd heard of NEO Comic Con but had never attended until this year, and it was all because you guys endorsed it so heavily. I had a great time and picked up some great comics, and what a nice bonus to meet you guys. The week before I stopped by Comics Are Go to pick up my ticket to the show and also found the last issue I needed to complete my Dr. Strange Vol. 2 run, and that was right after attending a signing by David Michelinie at another local shop. July was a great month for collecting in Northeast Ohio! Thanks again for the recommendation. -- Brad, the guy in the Dr. Strange shirt
This was a great show! I had to come back to see this one. Great to see Richard's All-Negro Comics 1 - wow, a rare, important book. Also - yeah, there's ah, NO debate about racist tropes in comic history!
I have a copy of Howdy Doody #6 (Dell 1951) in my collection, and when researching it last week was interested to find out it was cited in Seduction of the Innocent for being racist. The cover story is about Howdy being captured and cooked up in a pot by African tribes-people. Must admit I wasn't aware that Wertham was calling out racial insensitivity way back then.
Hello guys, how are you? Thank you for the interviews from the show they were very informative. I’d like to take a moment to comment on discrimination in comic books. There are many people who want to take the material and destroy it and make it as if it never happened, this is a big mistake. History is doomed to repeat itself if we don’t remember what has happened in the past. Comic books of any particular. Reflect what is happening in society. Just look at the green lantern book. Or the Spider-Man books of the 70s that talked about drugs. Comic books that talk about race, schism, antisemitism, or any other type of hatred wowed disgusting that it happened, it is important to remember it to teach our children in order not to repeat the same ignorance. I am always, looking to educate and what a better way to do so than through a comic. Just think about the.“Greek gods“ and their immorality. We take those characters and make them superheroes yet if something like what they were doing where to take place today Congress would go nuts and pass laws preventing it. I applaud you for purchasing that book even at a CGC 0.5 and recognizing the historical value of it. Once again, you have a great show that provides a very important lesson. Thank you very much. It is a lesson that I will teach to my son so that he does not. Repeat the horrific negativity of the past.
I would assume that the debate would revolve around whether one should vilify the creators of those racist works or if we should give them a break for just having the prevailing views of the time. So maybe not a question of whether it's racist per se but whether the creators would be considered racist.
I can understand that perspective and see how the question “were comics racist back in the day?” could be misinterpreted. There is no question in my mind that yes, the comics were absolutely racist. “Should the artists & creators be to blame?” Is another philosophical question that likely has many caveats and sliding scales of malice vs ignorance as well as the role of society had to play at the time.
I haven’t ever read a Cerebus book, and I didn’t know anything about Dave Sim until this video, so I googled his name and read a little bit. I was very impressed with his DIY approach and advocacy for self publishing. I was also a fan of his views regarding copyright and public domain. Then I read about his views on women, his support of the 90’s comic boom and other pretty awful things. I don’t understand how one person would hold all of the views he has concurrently. The very anti-capitalist, open-source public domain licensing of his characters doesn’t jive with supporting the comic boom of the 90’s to me. Maybe I am missing something. Seems like 2 different people. Perplexing. Well, in my perplexed state, I ended up doing the only natural thing I could think of and purchased a copy of Cerebus 186 on eBay for $3.99. 🤷♂️
What’s the longest you guys have waited for your CGC books? Currently waiting for books that were pressed by a 3rd part presser and sent to CGC but didn’t express books
