The book examines one of Europe's most fascinating but underrated cultures from the point of view of an intercultural expert and foreign author - one with intimate knowledge of every facet of Belgian life.
Some excerpts: "Contrast and contradiction are the essential flavours of Belgium and its cultures. This is a surrealist country, where day-to-day reality challenges the foreigner's powers of imagination. Yet, as the Dutch can tell you, when confronted with an intellectual impasse, Belgians can be surprisingly creative. In challenging situations they have a remarkable ability to think outside the box.
When you have had almost every European nation marching through the living room (which someone with a deviant English sense of humour called the Lebensraum), its not surprising that you develop a defensive tick. Thats exactly what many Belgians have: a healthy scepticism plus a tendency to batten down the hatches at the slightest sign of trouble, what one can call a bunker complex. History has taught them to react to developments rather than to initiate them. Hardly surprising in the circumstances!"

I’m a quarter Flemish. My Grandmother was Flemish and my Mother was born in Brussels before moving to England. I love Belgium, the food is incredible and so are the people. 🇬🇧💕🇧🇪

Belgium has become a most bizarre country….in more than one aspect, but then again Europe, as a whole, has changed dramatically over the last years. As for Belgium, if the French speaking population had applied the laws of the Year 1939, stating that every one in the country should learn the language of the other ( which the Flemish did !) there would not be a problem today… But the French speakers refused, considering the Flemish language to be the language of the peasants. Meanwhile the aim of the French speaking ‘leaders’ was to ‘Francophonise’ slowly the entire country. Somewhere around 1964 a French speaking politician declared on TV : “Five years from now, the triangle Brussels-Waver-Leuven” will be completely French speaking”. This resulted in heavily manifestations by the Flemish university students who shouted: “Walen buiten in Leuven!”. As a result, the French speaking students were thrown out of Leuven and a new French speaking department of the Leuven university was build in the vicinity of Brussels, called “Louvain la Neuve”. The arrogance of the French speaking politicians has lead ultimately to the “federalization” of the country. It is sad, but believe me, still today a great number of French speakers (many of them with Flemish roots !!) look down on Flemish speakers as belonging to an inferior race (we have been witnesses!) Today, politically, the two parts of Belgium have drifted apart. But, amazingly enough, in the tourist sector one does find only friendly people, as well in the south as in the North. Splitting the country is, in my opinion not an option, nor solution. I’m not even certain that it would be possible in practice. One does seem to forget that, in case of a spit-up, the national debts need to be proportionally divided up, which means at least 60% for the Flemish speakers (and that would hurt a lot, I guess. Another painful issue: how to spit-up an international town such as Brussels ? IMPOSSIBLE !! Brussels could then only be some kind of “Washington DC”, belonging to neither the North, nor the South. At this moment, the NV-A is , together with the CD&V and the Liberals, leading the country. We don’t hear any further declarations about spitting up the country. One must admit that, since the NV-A is on board of the government, some courageous and lawful decisions are being made (by NV-A ministers!) . We got rid of the socialists who only cared about the number of votes, so they could keep their seat in the government. As for the CD&V, well they wouldn’t dare to frustrate their possible candidate voters with the result that no serious decisions were taken neither (in Flemish we would call the: “Platbroeken”.

Daniel Wybo this is no place to be running your campaign. N-VA may have 30% of the votes among 60% of the population, but that means the majority doesn't share your view,... like me. I do, however, agree about the impossibility of splitting. Another flemish belgian.

A bit weird reasoning .. Belgians are more pragmatic than the Dutch? ... because they don't honour existing commitments. They don't speak out if they don't agree with something. That is not pragmatic, that is introvert and unclear. It is more convenient to first reach agreement, and then to work pragmatically.

@decnijfkris3706
@decnijfkris3706 5 лет назад
The analysis is pretty close to reality. The front door neighbor's place is foreign country and Belgians keep their comments indoors. Speaking out in Belgium can cause serious problem. Belgium is very high ranking in the list of corrupt countries. You can get literally anything done if you know the right people. Due to all the restrictive rules imposed by the State, the European Union and now also townships Belgians are unable to take any initiative in business and trade. Social life is dull and monotonous. Most of the would be Belgian inventions , which are really rare, are just copies of originals coming from abroad. Universities promote these lies. The fact that the media are state owned or subsidized does not make things better. Most of the Belgians stay on their own in order to avoid trouble. The Belgian Government is very double-hearted as it comes to keeping up relations with the USA. Governmental institutions, schools, public organisations tend to depict all what is American as evil capitalistic. Belgians are so spoiled that they don't have a clue how money is made. The Belgians still do not understand that 90% of the businesses are built with American money coming from overseas investors. It is thanks to these investments that we have jobs. Even Solvay got his money from Americans. Government does not respect the fact that the American and the Canadian boys came here a good sixty years ago to save us from nazism and from communism. After WWII American products where everywhere in Belgium. We had nothing at that time. Then in the 80ies the Government and the Unions destroyed systematically all what had been built in the last decades until the point that Americans went away or only stayed when the fiscal climate was an advantage. The last years Americans tried very hard to restore the relations and still they weren't very welcome giving us jobs and purchase power. Big companies like Microsoft and Google got doubtful mega fines for just being here. Except from some nice historic buildings we don't have much to offer. Belgian society is sour today. Due to Junker's politics we are in love with Chinese, Korean manufacturers buying their cheap goods. General Motors left the country, Ford stopped, Caterpillar stopped, Delacre almost closed down, Dauwe Egberts laid off major part of its workers and so so so so many more. We are very racist too. Black people and Muslim people don't move up the ladder. Only by controlled compassion they get a good job.The Belgian governmental scene is ridiculous and infantile. You better have an influential dad in order to mean something in this circus.Today the Belgian financial situation is very bad. Misconduct of its leaders, theft, corruption and total incompetence are keywords in this. Middle class is getting more and more financial troubles due to the fact that the economy does not have any added value. The import side of our trade balance shoots to the stars.The next political party that offers a 100 euros tax reduction will get elected without any problem. Still many lonely souls protest almost in silence against the situation in Belgium. Reading the comments on the internet newspaper pages Belgians want to get rid of all the rules they have to live with. The also speak out against corruption in legal, political and judiciary affairs. Belgians also jerk around the globe telling how great they are and criticizing other cultures. They should better humble down. Belgians are Europe's toddlers.

Belgium is very high ranking in the list of corrupt countries?!!! Yes i agree corruption can be found everyware even in Finland or Sweden. The international list goes like this. The top 100 of the world withouth exeption is filled with 3th world country's. Than the former Soviet states come allong the moust less corrupt country's are North America, Oceanic country's like New sealand and Australia, EU countries (west,central and northern europe, even Poland Czech republic are considdered to be not realy corrupt.) Belgium stays moustly between the 15th and 20st place in the ranking of being less corrupt. But afcourse it depends wat do you see as being corrupt. To me the border is where money flows. Ore if you have been bribed. The scale of bribing is realy 10.000 times worse in third world country's as it is here. And i realy never heard of it that people had to give banknote of 100 euro to bribe a public servant. It is not in our culture. But whe all are humans wright? So we allways pinpoint others to blame. An example. Le'ts say i am a local politician. I have a shovel and my neighbour hase a lawnmaier. The situation is this. My neighbour comes to me and asks if i could help him to dig his garden. I say yes. But i have a problem to i say. Can you mow the lawn. He says afcours. Well i am a politician so this is called dienstbetoon/Vriendjespolitiek. (there is a thin red line between the two because of rumours and durty talk on the streets) One says its favoritism another says he just helping his neyghbour. I as a politician i must be puritan and almoust unhuman. Witch i am not. So my rule is do never take money. And helping people like my neighbour is a good thing.
