Hey David, you mentioned that a lot of your work has been on conspiracy theory research. Has any of it been published, and if so, where can it be read? Thanks!

There's a great book on conspiracy politics/theory called The Republic of Cthulu.

Hi David, long time listener, first time caller. Unless I'm mistaken Hofstadter's essay is "...in American Politics" rather than "...of American Politics", just in case you are citing it in your research. An interesting related tidbit, if you ever have a chance to read Walter Kaufmann's introduction to On the Genealogy of Morals he has some fun points about how the "Zur" in the original should be translated, as it could be "towards", so Nietzsche's "on the" would be Heidegger's "towards". A lot can hang on that preposition.

Hi David, a great presentation as usual. I am just wondering why didn't you give any example of 9/11 conspiracy theories. Many thanks.

Oh dear. The whole point about chance and probability (7:10) is that it isn’t open to the kinds of patterns we humans like things to take 🤭

I haven't read the essay through, but wonder if one wave or another of peoples/immigrants sustain our "particular" paranoia. We are still the only "experiment " of our type and, considering the expected geopolitical/geographical divisions with the coming planetary changes, that will likely only become worse.

He mentions that. I also watched a lecture, "Holocaust in Ukraine" and the historian mentions that hitler used the wave of Ukrainian Jews, fleeing the attacks in Ukraine, to start his attacks on Jewish people. It's important to note that the author, and American Jew, focus his work on the phenomenon of anti-semitism in Ukraine and its historic and circumstancial origins - and they were not what I imagined! He makes large use of Oral History and the lecture I watched is amazingly beautiful!

Is it possible for partisan or cultural sensibilities to take precedence over critical thinking?

That's impossible! That has never happened in history! (just a joke to lighten things up)

States the well read RU-vidr with zero first hand verification. I recommend journaling your conclusions. Truth rises. In just the last decade the list of conspiratorial challenges to the sheltered American culture have made a nice web to ponder. Best right it down or you will conveniently not recognize what you perceived as base•less.

... are you new here? This podcast is supposed to explain philosophical text. While David sometimes gives his own insights as well, the primary purpose of this podcast is to share ideas and not to derive an absolute conclusion from them.

Have a good winter break! Conspiracy theorizing is an conceptual framework to understand the world while maintaining incommensurate beliefs. A prime example for me are the white people in the US, especially the slave owners, who considered themselves to be Christian and moral people throughout most of American history. To maintain that belief, they had to adopt false beliefs to rationalize their actions, but which wouldn't require changing their situation and behavior. Over time this mental practice became habitual, and by now it's become the way of life. As a Canadian you couldn't possibly understand, having never experienced it. But have you ever noticed that Americans tend to believe that they each have an infallible -- dare we say godlike? -- moral sense?

I define it as having never traveled and have no survival mode or awareness. So most of the engagement in life is limited. You are what you think about most. Curiosity stops at the border. Where as the world in general seems to have a better grasp of the American mind in addition to a macro view of the world and the multiple symbiotic relationships. The mind of an American in general is the product of marketing/propaganda. Well crafted and decades in the making. More self examination, more silly questions asked and verification for the win. Most people will not do the work. But that is why who you listen to is a success principle. For the macro view the world is full of half truths. I say don’t believe a word I have written, just verify for yourself. Tangible understanding is found in personal libraries, I have yet to see on RU-vid.

I strongly agree as a Native American born and raised in the Pueblo of Zuni and spent most of my life there. I now live off the reservation and I've come across the term White Savior. Some strange encounters were from narcissistic White people that misinterpret Buddhism to believe they're the only God or strongly opinionated, and sometimes knowledge, that only their opinion matters. Typically, I just ignore them when they start telling me they know more than I do about Zuni religion and only having broad generalisations. There messages have included; I know I can use you as the face of my leadership to turn Zuni into the next Silicon Valley, God is from the colonizer's religion and Buddhism tells me that I'm God and can heal you from your mental illness, I know more than you about everything because I have more expensive stuff than you and I'll be your spiritual guide. All of them providing proof they're not White by saying; I'm not white because I'm 1/8 Irish, I'm not White because I'm 1/8 Welsh, I'm not White because I'm 1/8 Scottish. Each of them saying something like this; I'm Kevin Costner's character in Dances with Wolves, I love Walt Disney's Pocahontas, I love you guys and here's a piece of a Hallmark card with some generic Indians with dream catchers on it that you can have. The funniest experience I've had was with a girl that just saw the first Avatar in theatres and noticed my long hair and red skin and asked, "Have you ever braid bonded?"

Hofstadter offers a rough schematic of the phenomenon. Must be on my way, however if you wish a deeper understanding, read Milton on Machiavelli authored by Barbara Riebling. It is the perceived divorce of morality from civic virtue at issue. Hofstadter’s piece illustrates how far we have drifted. Read for yourself.

no criticism on the theory or book but if you neglect the large psychological element - which clearly shows that some people are more prone to"the paranoid style" compared to most - you will fail to frame the theory in a context of reality and your students will simply think we can all resolve this little problem with a little light reading Its a common problem with philosophy experts...... they lack major domains of skill relevant to the problem in practical rather than abstractly theoretical terms. You should youtube a guy named Michael Millerman who literally transforms political science (his Phd) into a Woo Woo factory, apparently because he has that paranoid style sort of personality himself en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-wing_authoritarianism
