Glad he wrote the song for Vixen. Jan's guitar work was just perfect for the song and the ending work remains one of my favorite solos of all time. Too bad she died very early in life....
been listening to hims sine early 90s... (i was born in 86) and I got to see him live Feb 2023... i didn't think it'd be possible... because his voice already melted me... but SOMEHOW HE'S EVEN BETTER!!!
I knew that Richard wrote this song for Vixen but just learned that he performed it live - himself. I love everything about this! I've always loved his songwriting and his voice is just beautiful.
Saw Richard in February 1990 at William & Mary Hall in Williamsburg, VA. He ended the show with this. He played Hold on to the Night while sitting at a piano on stage. After the conclusion of it, the lights were dimmed, the piano was lowered through the stage, then they went into this hit. Richard put on a hell of a show that night.
Because there no more vocals like Richard Marx, Lou Gramm (Foreigner) or Joey Tempest (Europe). They were bounded to the soul of 80'ies. These were really soulful magical vocals !!! Thanks to the 80'ies..!!!

Every one comparing the versions have to remember this was Richard Marks studio band Vixen was a band not singer. So compare Vixen's lead vox to Richard Marks. I enjoy both Richard Mark's is more soul and pop while Vixen's was an attempt at the 80s hair metal with a all female line up.
Honestly I don t hear nothing Soul in his performance.... I d say he too was sn attempt to classic US pop rock a la Michael Bolton, Jeff Paris and many others.. That said he is obviously an exceptional songwriter and a remarkable Vocalist
He actually sounds pretty good. After all, he wrote the song for Vixen (he appears in their video). However, Vixen sounds better! Their prettier too! Long live 80´s music!! The best of all time!
This is the first time I've heard him sing this. I know he wrote it, but Vixen gave the song a little more kick and and a bit more attitude. I always wanted to know if he ever recorded this. Now I know. Thanks!

Is that Cozy Powell on drums? I saw Richard Marx perform this live on an MTV New Year's Ball in the late 80's. This was around the time that Vixen had their hit with this song and RM was huge himself. When he did this, on top of his own hits, I thought it was incredible. I remember that his guitarist had a guitar that looked like the fin from an old 50's car, complete with working tail light!
@dawnybabexx Actually Bon Jovi's song has the same title, but is ultimately a completely different song. It is one of Bon Jovi's best & most over looked.
I understand he wrote this song, and it is very catchy by the way lol, but I think Vixen did a better job with it. Dont get me wrong, I'm probably just use to hearing Vixen play it. Anyways, they are both excellent performers. 5 Stars
Credit where credit is due, this guy is a great songwriter and a decent singer. I prefer the Vixen version cos, well, they're hot chicks but I wouldn't say their version was "Better".
For those of you who say Vixen is better, well you are comparing a live recording to studio....I bet you if Marx recorded this in the studio it would be better than Vixens version
It's common practice among rock bands to sing not own songs. For example House Of Fire wrote Bon Jovi, but sang Alice Cooper. I go to find Richard Marx demo if it exist
LOL, I forgot all about the fact that he wrote this. I remember I was surprised when I read it in the Vixen cassette sleeve. Yes, I said cassette sleeve and yes I remember records and 8 tracks too lol. What's funny is I was just commenting on a Vixen clip and how I forgot about them being in a movie.
I guess this would be his "Blinded By The Light" original while Vixen would be the Manfred Mann rendition. It took a while for the buildup, he did okay on his own song. Jan blew "Ben Walton" out of the water in the solo. Thanks for sharing this lost classic

Richard Mar makes a camo appearance in Vixen's video. As to musicians Vixen's drummer and bass player was bad ass. Richard Marx should have used they on his album version. His lead guitar player is better than the one in Vixen who also started their band. The singing voice is like comparing apples and oranges really.
Well put. All these Marx fanbois are too busy deep throating him to hear that the Vixen version IS better. Marx knew it otherwise he wouldn't have sold them the song and then produced it himself! Marx MADE it better by telling Janet exactly how to sing it. She can use the higher register better than Marx.
