Turning a large endgrain box with a suction-fit lid presents a few challenges. Here you see how I deal with them. The wood is West Australian forest sheoak.
Hi Richard. Thanks so much for your generous support of the woodturning community. I've learned so much from you, I just would not be anywhere near as good as I am without your books and videos.
Just the most beautiful education a turner could want. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us Richard. I've been following you for 30 years now i think and still never tire of your style and delivery. Thanks again. I hope you're happy, healthy and doing well. Cheers!
A simple yet beautiful design executed by a master. Thank you so much for sharing all of your tips, tricks, and thoughts. I always enjoy your videos because I always learn something.
Beautiful piece. There is always something to learn from these videos, in this case it was the use of beeswax to hold the lid on when it came up a bit loose -- that was quite counter-intuitive. Will definitely be using that in the future.
Are you making a matching sugar, too? Beyond the tool skills and beautiful design, one takeaway I have is how important the chucks are to the implementation of the design. Like a chess player, you seem to know the next couple chucking moves ahead. I guess that comes with years of practice.
Thanks Richard. You certainly are a wood turning treasure and mentor to many many woodturners. This box demonstrates your ability and decision making exceptionally well. I was a little surprised that you didn’t have a piece of wood big enough just lying around, as you usually turn some pretty special Timbers. Thanks once again. Question. Asymmetric grind, do you have this on bowl gouges and or spindle gouges. Can you tell us the rationale behind this grind please. Do you think that this grind can be achieved using a jig as many/most Woodturner’s can’t duplicate a grind successfully without a jig.
An asymmetric grind enables a cut from rim to centre in a deep bowl. It essentially two gouges in one. In the early 1970s bowl gouges were ground straight across. There's a video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cnNBBV19YLw.html
The blank was bone dry and the wood renowned for its stability. Retail price for a fully seasoned blanks this size is probably somewhere between $50 and $75, maybe more - if you can find it.
I'm new to turning and I'm not too familiar with that technique with the skew chisel. It doesn't look like you are riding the bevel, so I'm not sure how it's not catching on you. Any more info on the technique? Thanks!
I don't know which skew technique you're referring to. In the Novice Turners playlist ru-vid.com/group/PLBAvwOB0lJTS1BKp14ZYb1MBVImnDOY1K you'll find several videos on skew chisels and catches including ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2joWFELkFTI.html
@@RichardRaffanwoodturningSorry for not specifying...you use it frequently but a good example is at the 35:40 mark. Thanks for the links, it looks like it's a peeling cut!
@@agtjamesb007 That's about as good a view as I can offer of a low peeling cut. The surface isn't quite as smooth as a shear cut, but it's the best way I know of guaranteeing no torn or picked-out grain. No tool pressure against the wood is the key.
On very tight an dense grain I tend to use just beeswax. On more open grain the wax doesn't melt into the pores where as oil flows in, so oil and wax on timbers like ash and oak. When there are fissures as on open burl, I use just oil as wax catches in the cracks, looks terrible, and is laborious to remove.
Tool rest height: It's more what you are comfortable with. I like to hold the tool handle slightly below horizontal, so the tool rest goes up with the diameter. I do sign everything but later when I sign a batch of pieces. I use permenant marker pens, pyrographic burner, and small engraver.
