This Ego Stick is turned from a 10mm square 260mm long (about ⅜-in square x 10-in long) using a ½-in skew chisel. In the 1980s & '90s I used to turn these as a finale to my day-long demos. I call them ego sticks because they're very good for your self-esteem when you complete one.

Ego stick by name. But in your hands, there is no ego, just professional expertise!
@taitano12

Eh, I dunno. For real skill, there needs to be some ego. True humility is, not feeling unworthy or having a low self esteem, or self worth, but, rather, having an accurate and frank assessment of one's skills and position/authority. This may boost one's ego, but it certainly keeps one humble too. A simple mistake would be catastrophic, but truly educational. A success, like this, reaffirms and demonstrates skills. Any spot where you feel unsure or nervous is a spot where you need more practice. Skill Stick is an equally good name for this as Ego Stick, IMHO.

@@gbwildlifeuk8269 Ooh, good one. A student making a "testing stick" or, as you put it a "skill testing stick" as a final.

Excellent demo of how to turn a skinny wand or even a finial, not just a skill or ego stick. Thank you. Now to go practice!

Thanks.. so many other types of wood turning comes easier, in my opinion, if one becomes comfortable spindle turning, just my opinion but you are one of the best teachers around. Thanks again.

A lot of people will agree with you that facework is relatively easy once you come to terms with skew chisels and turning spindles.

I remember this from your class in Utah April 1994. I came home and made lots of them. I used Tipuana Tipu. I even made a set of Pick-up sticks. Excellent instructional video as always.

Your command of the skew is impressive, surpassed only by your speed and confidence with it. I particularly appreciated your comments on how to roll the beads. Highly instructive.

Letting the wood come to the edge, once I learnt that, and realising and now using that with turning, has made turning much more enjoyable, and produces less catches. I wasn't sure if exactly what it was until you mentioned it in this video. Thanks for sharing Richard, every video you upload is a lesson with invaluable knowledge.

I used to turn these at the end of day-long demos when people were getting punch-drunk with information and I'd often have students turning them in 5-day hands-on workshops.

Wow. That was very enjoyable to watch, very impressive and very inspirational. I need to get a whole lot better with basic skew work before even thinking about attempting something like that. Does one need to be concerned about potential injury if a catch breaks the piece apart? If so, is there anything you would recommend to mitigate that risk? [Other than not having a catch]
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning 9 месяцев назад
I taught myself to use skew chisels reducing 2-in / 50mm squares about 200mm /8-in long to ever finer spindles until they broke. I turned the squares to round, then cut grooves, turned those into beads, then removed those and repeated the exercise on a smaller diameter. When the spindle breaks it's no big deal. These spindles are not nearly as difficult as they look and are excellent skill builders no matter what your end goal in turning wood is.

@@RichardRaffanwoodturning Thank-you for the response. That alleviates the one concern I had. Really appreciate these videos. Like all things worth learning, in theory this seems simple, but it is the nuances such as tool presentation, motion, and tilt that make this a skill only acquired through practice and repetition. Between your videos and Allan Batty's video, I think I'm starting to get the hang of this tool.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. In my hands, it would be a "humbling stick", or probably, to be more precise, a batch of "humbling toothpicks"

How fast were you turning that? I do lace bobbins at 4000 and use the same mounting method you use, except with a Jacobs chuck holding the blank. You and David Springett are my skew chisel inspirations.

I can't believe you didn't bore a hole right down the middle of it. I mean if you're gonna show off, you may as well go full throttle, right? Seriously though, if there's a better way to demonstrate that woodturning ain't a game of strength I'd love to see it.

I learnt the basics of turning using skew chisels and gouges to reduce 2-in / 50mm squares about 200mm /8-in long to ever finer spindles until they broke. I turned the squares to round, then cut grooves, turned those into beads, then removed those and repeated the exercise on a smaller diameter. When the spindle breaks it's no big deal. Bravo! This reminds me of the spiliken that you turned in a previous video. What are the differences in dimensions between the two blanks?
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning 9 месяцев назад
This is a few inches longer. Spillikins blanks are 10mm square x 220mm long. The longest I did in club demos are around 400mm /16-in. x ⅛-in or less. It's easier to start with thicker blanks.
