Richard Sterban has a voice quality that is second to none. He may not sing the lowest note of any bass singer, but his tone is fabulous. Really nice to hear that the Oak Ridge Boys are nice men, as there are so many celebrities today who aren't humble and likeable.
About two to five years ago, the Oaks went back to Independence, Kansas for Neewalloh Festival. Met them in passing. They were all amazing guys. Richard told me not to concentrate on singing the lowest notes and being the lowest bass I could be. It is better that I work on being the best singer I can be and I would be fine. Best advice even for a guy in his thirties! Truly a genuine person.
Seeing this answers my question whether Richard is still alive. I never thought to look on YT. Nice to see you Richard, I'm glad you're okay. From Kent Wilson, Florida. (Richard will know who this is)
"J D Sumner jumped on top of Elvis." JD knew Elvis when he was a poor 14 year old and JD a professional singer. He would let Elvis into concerts free. All those years later was willing to give his life to save Elvis, not knowing it was a joke. What a great loyal friend.
No doubt about it Elvis is still the greatest singer ever in our lifetime! He was the King in Rock n’ Roll and also in the Gospel Music World too!! Yes he is the GOAT!!
Also People of today don't know just how hot the Oak Ridge Boys where in the 80's. I was lucky enough to see them in concert in there prime 4-5 times. Great great group. Richard was great and still is.
I heard from a friend who went to one of Elvis' concert that he was like a magnet he just drew you in. Unfortunately, I was too young to go so wished I could have seen Elvis! I fell in love with Elvis when I was a child thought he was so handsome watched him in the movies. Then when he sang I fell in love! Best-looking man ever, golden vocals, charisma, set his career aside to put on an Army uniform, and given the Medal of Freedom "The King!"
I have been a long time fan of Elvis Presley. He was my main idol all the way through my life . It hurt me more than ever before when Elvis Presley died .
Love this guy as much as J.D. Sumner and Elvis Presley. The Oak Ridge Boys has sounded 100 times better now than ever before. You can see them on Bill Gaither show.
Our huge fan of you Richard you are the best you in the Oaks I love you I love love love you all and you're so sweet to have such great memories of Elvis what caused Elvis was always will be forever ever ever the
Thanks for the funny story about "The Legend Elvis Presley" So missed and Loved Always and Forever never forgotten. You are a lovely man Mr. Sterban and so was JD Sumner.
Really interesting. He usually seems quite shy, particularly in recent interviews, but he looks comfortable and looks like he could talk about Elvis for hours.
I really appreciate this interviewer letting the "interviewee" speak. She asked good questions…and more importantly, she's a great listener. We need more of this in our world
My mom and I have been to numerous Oak Ridge Boys concerts, and one of the biggest thrills was shaking Richard's hand at the Wagon Wheel Theater in Warsaw, Indiana.
Superb video, this young lady has a very gracious and respectful interview program and all could surely follow her example, great job, interview and guest all the way around, love, peace and blessings to you, Bobby in Tennessee
Thank you for all the great time I have had listening to you and thank you for all the great songs that you made possible to listen to with Elvis, I only wish I could have taking a timemachine so that I could have listend to Elvis and all of you that where on stage live !!!
I didn't know till now, hearing this, that Red and Sonny West died. Recently I kept playing one of the Oak Ridge Boys videos on RU-vid of them doing "Dream On." I loved how Richard sang it. The one with that dark blue atmosphere. But I also loved that song Dream On when it first came out. I liked alot of the Oak Ridge Boys songs. Thanks for this video. 😊
That prank by Elvis was unreal! JD should've headlocked him while he had him on the ground! Lol what if one of the Stamps was packing heat and started firing at the guy?!?!🤣🤣
Richard is so right . Just about anybody can sing with the all of this special effects that we have today . They didn't have that back then . My husband and I was just talking about this the other day . That's what made Elivs so great and Richard too . Love the Oak Ridge Boys !! So glad she got to do this interview with Richard . Thanks so much for sharing this video .
Wow I'm a big fan of Richard. I love the music of him with Elvis Presley. The Oak Ridge Boys they are awesome. I have tried to see the Oak Ridge Boys when they come to myside of town. But every time they sell out really fast. And have been here quite a few time. And every time it was sold out. They are the best WOW word's just can't explain. Love y'all guy's maybe one-day I will get to see them.
Hello from England ELVIS died 2 days before my 12th birthday. I have been a FAN ever since I have watched lots of videos about ELVIS and his backstory’ and they make me think so much more about the years that have ‘flown by’ - 50+ OH MY We are so blessed🙏that we have access to social media like RU-vid channels that spend time on posting videos like this one with Richard who was part of the Stamps Quartet during those live shows I am sure all the guys had great life experiences with ELVIS and there were so MANY MORE GOOD times than BAD times Sadly🥲there are very few still alive that knew ELVIS 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👍 👍 🥲🥲😃😃🙏🙏🙏
Really enjoyed the interview. Richard was very well spoken, and came across as very appreciative of all the opportunities with which God has blessed him.
Al Swearengen you’re thinking of the stantler brothers, that bass is named Harold Reid and his brother Don Reid was the lead singer till they retired. Richard sings bass for the oak ridge boys.
Richard said that without Johnny Cash, there'd be no Oak Ridge Boys. Same with the Statler Brothers-without him, they wouldn't have gotten their chance to make an impact on country music.
Morris Gibb thank u Richard sterban, love the interview, I love Elvis too and always will, u and JD Sumner r awesome, thanks again brother, I will be headed to Nashville myself soon, I hope I get a chance to meet u, that would be a once in a lifetime for me to meet u, thanks again brother, take care and b safe, sincerely Johnny Hall.
,why couldn't people tell Elvis a let him know how much he was loved a appreciated when he was alive. That's all he ever wanted was to be loved that was his message in his song. Love me. Elvis talked to you in his songs. A in his last concert it was plain to see. He was saying Adois which means Goodbye. Rip Elvis. Love a Miss you.
Sandra Miller Sandra when people get so far gone from being messed up in their heads with chemicals you simply can't talk to them anymore. All you can do is hope but they see the light before it's too late. I'm speaking to you from personal experience. I am a former addict. Clean and sober now I spend the rest of my days never missing an opportunity to let my friends and family know how much they mean to me. What more can I do after all the damage I did while I was still under the influence? Somebody said how can you save a man from himself? You can't. Hey must save himself.
W/respect to Richard 👌I certainly don't vknow except what I read & hear 🙉 Red West described the story of the threatening crazed man differently saying there was a fan in Vegas that acted different but security didn't need to react... Unless Richard is saying the other half of that story, or it's another one... "really like Mr Richard" one of the absolute best in my opinion
@@levilevi6248 Yes, I'm sure you totally know what it was like to be the biggest star in the world and have a million hangers on that made their living off of you and were who you trusted most that enabled your poor behavior day in an day out. He also had a mountain of health issues in general. You don't know what the guy was dealing with or what he should've or could've done so stop pretending you do.
Love to hear this kind of a celebrity talk about Elvis....I did not know Richard had the close a relationship with Elvis, Thanks for this Richard...My Favourite gospel song by Elvis is "Help Me" It is very Poignant to Elvis..........
I just love Elvis and all the DJs know it too. I fell in love with Elvis when I was a little girl (he passed before I could see him) and used to watch all his movies. I thought he was the most handsome man I had/have ever seen. Then when Elvis opened up his mouth to sing I was hook line in sink in love with that man. Elvis the best-looking man ever, golden vocals, charisma, and the greatest entertainer ever "The King!" I just happened to be fortunate enough to go to see the Oak Ridge Boys in concert in Princeton, IL August 24, 2017. I got front row right in front of Richard got to touch him. Yes I admit it was because he sang and knew Elvis but I also love the Oak Ridge Boys always did. They were very nice came right over to the end of the stage (I was in front) bent down and shook my hand many times. Great concert!
Richard Sterban! We were so happy we were able to see him and the Oak Ridge Boys in 2019. They're still fantastic. Was Richard on any of Elvis' recordings?
Now that's a great interview! Richard, I also love a bass singer as Elvis did. Here I am in my fifties and I am still discovering exciting stories & songs appreciating the Oak Ridge Boys. I recently lost my daughter, but my granddaughter survived a car crash upside down in her car seat in a river for many hours until they were found. The gospel music with it's messages has helped me through some rough hours with the messages only gospel music can do for me. If your ever in the Salt Lake City area, I would appreciate the opportunity to shake your hand & thank you personally. I'm looking forward in purchasing your book "From Elvis to Elvira".. Thank you...
Fantastic Interview!!! Thank You!! Sang with quartets for years!! Sterban is royalty. Have heard numerous times that JD fired him for out singing him. Can't imagine how magical those years with the king would have been.
To : Center Stage Magazine, Told you I have the same hat Richard Sterban is wearing, after months of looking & looking and calling people and never gave up and it was very hard to find the shirt! Several months and many calls and chatting on line to alot of OAK RIDGE BOYS fans,it finally paid off of looking very hard! I have the very same shirt Mr. Sterban is wearing, I never gave up on finding the same shirt and now I'm the very proud owner and was told they have them in another state that makes them and I'm one very happy fan!
In rehearsals he did. But when he recorded he had his stuff ready. He may take a couple of hours to warm up but he didn’t record till his voice felt right. I’ve heard the singers with him say that. He warmed up with gospel. After he did his shows he sAng gospel half the night after. He always hAd one piAno in his suite.
@@gracieg7601 Actually there are first hand accounts among them DJ Fontana who had stated that when Elvis recorded " Hound Dog " he did a total of 30 takes, but the same goes for a lot of songs he recorded, that he would stand there and do it for as many times as it took until he captured the feeling he was looking for.
Felicia Smith, My daughter knows that I'm a huge Oak Ridge Boys fan and I got the same hat which I received on my Birthday on March 22nd and its in the family room with all my old 8-tracks, cassettes , albums & now many CD's!! Many numerous albums from the 50's, 60's, 70's and all the way up to 2021!! But most of them are The Oak Ridge Boys, and I truly thank my daughter for the hat!!
Where is Richard from ? Town and State Please . I do know he went to Trenton State College ( Now The college of New Jersey ) . I close to that School and would love to know if he was close by .
Because J.D. wanted to sit back & let Richard sing bass, but Elvis wanted J.D. to sing as well, Richard could hit a low C & J.D. hit a double low C to off the scale to an EO, what Elvis wanted, he got!👍✌️
Pulled the same stunt at a 7-11 back in '76, although on a much much smaller scale. I shot "to death" a co- worker one early morning and his buddy who was there squealed like a stuck pig when I pointed the gun at him and said, " you're next"! It was awesome!
I love Richards voice and his memories 50 years later seem very sharp. Note to the interviewer: pick up a few synonyms for "incredible"; you over-used it to the point of distraction.
