There simply isn't a song that has been written which Richard cannot pick up and make his own. What an utter and constantly evolving talent Richard is and always has been.
I'm a big fan of Cream and a big fan of Richard Thompson and I loved this. He stayed true to the original while still giving it an unmistakable dash of RT flavour.
Man, I tell you what, Richard Thompson is one hell of a good guitar player. You don’t often hear his name mentioned among the guitar greats, but he can hang with the best of them, whether playing like this or fingerstyle acoustic. He’s fantastic.
Easily in my top 5 - at least within his generation's roots music realm. Top 3 among the living. Perhaps only Peter Green, Ry Cooder, Clarence White and Bert Jansch have a seat at that small table - in my estimation.
Incredible performance. His playing is legendary but one thing I always appreciate about RT is how his accent shines through in his vocals. It’s so true to his speaking voice and his range is very impressive.
Richard Thomson is my new favorite musician. What a range. What a strong musician! He seems to be able to play anything, and carry a concert by himself if need be. His band is great too.
I'm ok with you. Richard Thompson is a great musician, but particularly a fabulous guitarist. Always very inventive, versatile in his choices. But he don't have a great voice. With the both he could have been a star. But, that probably wasn't his intention.
@@billcooper6798 RT can play any Clapton song. Let's see Clapton play Vincent Black Lightning...that ain't going to happen, because Clapton couldn't; he shouldn't feel bad, RT is the best!
This is rather good, English understatment, it's refreshing and liberating to hear Thompson let rip like this as a rock power trio. He should do more of it... a whole album would be great.
Just discovered this after nearly 8 years. What a surprising choice and what a brilliant rendition. Absolutely as good as Cream. Special credit to Michael Jerome for his authentic drumming.
There's the amazing Pete Zorn I saw RT at the Boulder Theater years ago. I hung out afterward on the chance RT might come back out to chat a bit. He didn't, but i had a wonderful conversation with Pete. He told me about a banned book. The Yellow Line, about all the Allied soldiers in WW1 executed at the Front for cowardice. During the show, Pete took an absolutely Hendrix-esque solo on an Oud. Richard took the challenge and was mercilessly cranking his tuning machines while he soloed. Everyone in the Theater was in shock. Absolute magic. Thank you, Pete I'll Love You Forever
There's no one like MIchael! We shared a table at lunchtime in the BVI and after about 3 minutes I realized was sitting with RICHARD'S DRUMMER! He's as nice a guy as he is great drummer!
Richard Thompson's always been in a category all his own, with his guitar genius and his dark-toned songwriting, but wow, he can do any classic British rock and make it great, His voice and needless to say his guitar are perfectly suited to this song!
Oh jeez Richard! I must be in heaven....THANK YOU! One of your fans since early Fairport days. Cream fan since 1967...White Room! Psychedelic! Martin Sharp's beautiful Cream album covers are lovingly blazed into my brain.
The sound quality is primo! I got to chat with him a little after a gig in Paris a few years ago. He is the most charming, self-effacing musician you could ever hope to meet. He finally seems to be getting the amount of fans he deserves, after about 45 years in the biz. Funnily enough, I have more North American friends who are familiar with him than British.
I absolutely LOVE English electric bands from the 60's. We were very lucky to have been old enough to experience them in the beginning. I'll include The Jimi Hendrix Experience along with Cream, etc. etc. etc. THANKS!
And he's doing this with a blink in the eye with this trio. This is sort of their tribute to a great musician friend, Jack Bruce. He, they, know that they cannot do it like the outmost purists should want them to. If you want that, then regresse some 40 years.
Love the Richard Thompson band performing 'White Room' written by Bruce, Jack/Brown, Pete. A beautiful song and I personally feel played superbly. What a gem to share with someone that loves this trio of great Masters on their instruments. Richard's vocals always thrills me for he is one of my fave' artists. Thanks Angel Warrior for choosing yet another winner for me to enjoy. Blessings to you..... :-)
I just love that pure enjoyment in the drumming; bouncing off the stool and smiling and laughing throughout. Pure pleasure to watch and of course to hear.
This is why Iowa City is one of the greatest cities. Incredible free, open air concerts every Friday and Saturday night in the summer! Two of the best shows I've ever seen have been in downtown IC. (This was one of them)
Yeah, what the hell??!!! Actually over FORTY years of his career wah-wah-less. Wish he would have really busted loose at the end for an extended solo. Is there no end to his talent?!
Thompson's penchant for really letting go in concert in a band situation really depends on his drummer. Michael Jerome just freaking kicks ass, so Thompson has to keep up...
This was the 2nd great RT concert at an Iowa City Arts Fest. 1st one he was solo. Just incredible both times. Don't think I'll ever forget these two performances. Thanks RT.
Tired Starlings! Never mind the initial guffaws from the crowd, this is no joke. . . my eyes are rolling back into my head. I'm confused and humble, like at Church.
I think I've seen some of Richard's ability to play anything well. Saw him once and he did Britney Spears'Oops I Did it Again, much to the amusement of the crowd. The man never fails to impress.
Isn't it interesting, that this man, who has largely chosen to remain out of the spotlight throughout his career, is actually a contemporary of Clapton and others, and that he still continues to grow and amaze, even as many of his 'peers' have sunk into complacency and irrelevance?
Richard you are king 🤴 We saw you at Palookaville on pacific ave. In Santa Cruz California. We had the night of our lives but……it was wayyyy too loud man 👨 lol 😆 Please come to aptos and perform with Teddy 🧸
I was there too. I am a big fan since Fairport days, but we had to leave that show for the sake of our ears. It was like being hit in the chest with a large chair. Absolutely deafening. Much, much louder than The Who.
Why does everyone have to be better than so and so. RT is great, EC is great too. Both different, enjoy both and be thankful for both. ps. I've seen RT over 20 times in my life and the man is a genius.
Lucky you! I've always wanted to have a chat with Richard. He's always seemed as you say, like a good dude. Being a guitar player, RT is one of my top my musical heroes.
I spoke to Mr T many years ago when he was promoting Hand of Kindness. He was super nice, even to an awestruck fanboy like me. He has piercing eyes, which you cannot see from a video or even when you see him on stage.
He couldn't quite get pitch on the very highest notes and I was thinking how a pro like him can learn how to stretch himself without overdoing it to point of damage. He was holding back on the very highest to avoid damaging himself. He writes songs in his range and it can be tough doing copy songs you really like that go just beyond your own range but lure you into trying them anyway. RT wont be singing Brad Delp or Steve Perry copies in the same key unless he goes down an octave.
The Electric Trio are just tremendous. When they play stuff like ‘ For share of doing wrong’ or ‘Storm won’t come’ they have the passion and energy of a band of twenty year olds, with the technical ability of true masters. He’s not bad with an acoustic either...
Richard Thompson is pretty awesome, but - I find myself staring at the drummer who is holding Ginger Baker's essence in the palm of his hand.... amazingly accurate cover, comparable to the original
***** trawling through some of my favourite music and I see someone who shares the same hero as me...Hitch, also partaking in Richard Thompsons music... what are the chances of 2 mirror minded, impecable tasted people out there.... amazing!
It’s interesting to compare RT’s guitar intro to Clapton’s on the Cream reunion in 2005 at RAH. Richard’s is faithful to the record, while Clapton’s is all first and second position, which doesn’t stand out the way RT’s does here. And the wah-wah is a rare treat.
