Bill McClaren in rugby, Peter O'sullivan in horse racing, Dan Maskell, tennis. All great commentators. Benaud was certainly up there with the very best.

He was my commentator that defined my love for the game. Richie was just sublime and never a word or emotion wasted.

He was always that bit more brutal in his assessments on Channel 9 than he was on the BBC with statements like "Pakistan may live to regret this..." when describing Pakistan misfielding or their running between wickets. Or tag teaming up with Ian Chappell or Bill Lawry complaining about the lack of aggressiveness in either the Pakistan/Indian/Sri Lankan fielding/running between wickets etc. The Australian viewers love that sort of "brutal" talk.

I could listen to Richie read the phone book. People like him, Emmanuel Steward in boxing, Murray Walker in F1 are the best of the best and make sport even more enjoyable to watch.

One of the great commentators, up there with Murray Walker, Peter Alliss and Bill McLaren. Golden voices and a golden generation of sports commentary. RIP Richie.

Grew up with his commentary on the BBC in the early 70's with another 'great', Englands' Jim Laker. With the inimitable 'Soul Limbo' introducing the BBC Test Match coverage in the UK it really heralded another glorious Summer of Test Match Coverage in which I looked forward to immensely, and dear Richies' commentary was at the same time educational and complimented by his wonderful dry wit! Indeed, great and glorious halcyon cricketing Summer days!!! X

Always thought Brian Bennett's New Horizons was next level compared to Soul Limbo which is pretty cool in and of itself.

He knew when to let the game commentate itself. He did not love the sound of his own voice and was happy to let the pictures tell the tale.....RIP Richie...

Another of the old commentary guard gone. Only Peter Aliss and Nigel Stamer Smith left now. The reason why he was so good,he was trianed Propley by the BBC. A lesson for all broadcasters of today [and for all professions come to think of it] You are only Good,Great [or in Beanaud"s case brillant If and only if you are trained first. RIP Mr. Benaud. You were the best. Disablred UK Carrer.
