I like that Sting seemed to be enjoying how goofy the bit was, good sport.

Sting broke on the final line of the sketch. The sting a ling a ding ding ding dong line got a genuine laugh from Sting. I remember this sketch. It was brilliant. Anyone could instantly copy this and have a lot of fun goofing around with their family or friends. I remember seeing this on SNL and the next week at school all the kids were doing this bit. It was fun. It's like this are great because anyone can instantly copy it and make it their own and have some fun with it and it becomes a pop culture thing. For anyone interested check out the fly on the wall podcast where Dana Carvey and David Spade talk SNL. Rob Schneider was just on their podcast and they discussed the origin of this bit as well as many other things.

I was in 4th grade when I started watching SNL every Saturday night. It was 1989. For the next several years I grew up with this crew every week. Sandler, Spade, Hartman, Lovitz, Nealon, Schneider, Myers, Carvey and Farley. I even had an SNL calender on my wall. I would memorize everyone's characters. I would record on my parents VCR every episode. Every week. I created my own volumes of tapes with art work and little notes of sketches I loved and the musical guests and which songs they performed. I remember one night my older cousin called me and said there's this guy hosting tonight, his name is Andrew Dice Clay. Make sure you record this episode. It's important. And I did. I was 10 or 11. Its still one of my all time favorite episodes. I think i was in 6th grade. The following Monday I went to school quoting Dice and asking everyone if they watched the episode. Nobody knew what I was talking about. This cast basically shaped my sense of humor. I grew up fast. I was the coolest 6th grader ever.

...this was actually a pretty popular skit...everone was imitating (sp) this skit...go to a party, a restaurant, a bar & somebody would break out in Schneider's character... ...one of the effects SNL had on the American culture it seems was that the popular skits & characters would be repeated the following week in offices, junior highs, high schools, college get-togethers, jobsites, etc...like The Coneheads, The Spartans (cheerleaders), Wild & Crazy Guys, Gumby, Todd & Lisa Lupner, Killer Bees, etc...and everybody would imitate the characters the following week...pretty organic actually... ...now the only way anybody knows about a good skit is RU-vid or some other social media outlet or media talking head features them so to lead us as to which one's are funny...or rather...what they think we should perceive as funny...not very organic either...and there's not to many of them anymore to boot...I never even watch the show anymore... ...my sister got me a coffee cup for Christmas a long time ago (early 90's) that had a characature of this guy w/ all these quotes "makin' coffee", "havin' some Joe", "takin' a coffee break", etc... ...people in my office would stop by my desk and start reading it constantly in that voice... ...the irony wasn't lost on me as all the people would stop by my desk & annoy the hell out of me...Lol! ...oh well, I thought it was a funny skit... ...& I wish I could find that stupid coffee cup...
@CrazyBear65
@CrazyBear65 5 лет назад
Yeah, the show just ain't the same anymore. I'm not sure when it changed, but I think the turning point was when they wouldn't let Tom Morello drape the upside down flag over his amps... Lorne Michaels in that moment went from humorist who supports the people to humorist who supports the status quo in the blink of an eye. In this current atmosphere of "political correctness" and "SJWs" one can't even have a sense of humor anymore lest we be accused of "insensitivity" or some such nonsense, one can't even kid around with one's female coworkers, lest we be accused of "sexual harassment" ... (By the way, ladies, telling a joke is not harassing you, and neither is complimenting you on your choice of outfit.) What an upside-fuckin-down society it's become of late. {And they made Mark Hamill drink green milk from a sea cow titty. If that's not the ultimate middle finger to our generation then tell me what the fuck it is, huh?!}

I hear you, my husband and I have the "you like a da juice?" joke, and several others from episodes before that - even though we got together years afterward, reruns & VHS collections gave us memories together we had individually before. Truly funny jokes - or in this case - skits, usually withstand the test of time. Personally, I still find this skit pretty funny. Maybe you're asking the wrong question. Since this skit was first shown, a lot has happened especially to those of us old enough to remember the very first airing of this skit on SNL. We have been conditioned on anti-social media, many have been indoctrinated by mainstream media, public schools, Universities, told what to think, say and do. We all have instantaneous news access 24/7, "news" broadcasters who do nothing but give their opinion on the story of the day. We carry handheld computers in our pockets that have more computing capacity AND storage capacity than NASA did when they went to the Moon. We are bombarded with EMF radio frequencies that are at best "rewiring" how the synapses in our brains fire as a result of the proliferation of this technology. Bombarded by probably tens thousands of images daily that change the way we think.

It's really unfortunate that several departments use the printer in my desk cabinet at work, because i literally *CANNOT* stop myself from doing this every time somebody comes over to print something. Nobody under 30 understands the reference, so i just look insane.
