One of my favourite episodes. It's so stupid and the bits at where you hear roiland laughing at his own dumb jokes make it even funnier.

"Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody's gonna die. Come watch TV." One of my favourite quotes of all time. Essentially, our lives have no intrinsic meaning and will end at some point, so do what makes you feel good and fulfilled. If, at times, that means watching TV, then so be it.

"The purpose of art is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit." + "Listen, we are here on Earth to fart around. Don't let anybody tell you any different!" Kurt Vonnegut, both from 'Timequake.'

"And today we'll be watching Rixty Minutes! I gotta tell you I've given up on trying to understand this show" Literally perfect timing XDD imagine watching a drunk dude improv nonsense for 30 mins, and animators desperately try to draw it, and being sat there trying to decipher it

I love that all the interdimensional TV ads in this episode were improvised on the spot which is why they're all so completely bizarre and rambling. They just got in the booth and started to riff and adlib crap off the top of their heads. Brilliant Also, that speech Morty gives to Summer is probably my favouite writing in this show. Outstanding.

Morty is played as super simple, but that plays to his benefit this time. He's direct. "I've seen my own dead body. We're all just here. Your family is wack but we love you and you're underage. Don't run away, sis". Summer was convinced Morty couldn't help her 'cuz he couldn't understand, but he didn't need to. He just needed to be there with her for it. Beautiful

Most of these little sketches were written by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland was seeing them for the first time when he was doing the voice acting for them. That’s why he almost breaks character and starts cracking up so many times lol

Glad you’re enjoying the madness this far! The underlying continuity is slow to reveal itself, but the cumulative impact is surprisingly awesome.

I think they're certainly nihilist ideas, but it still comes across more like a sideways reference to feelings on the mono no aware side of things. You remember that scene in Sandman where Death picks up the baby from the crib? I got a similar feeling there, a melancholic but uplifting recognition of fragility that makes holding onto the beautiful moments all the more imperative. That seeing the fragile and broken things that can happen in our universe makes you respond with something showing your whole heart. It's a shift of perspective from seeing those same nihilistic things and instead of feeling like nothing matters suddenly everything matters.

In the Anglosphere, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett all give me similar vibes. A deeply empathetic view of humanity filtered through a dark, often darkly humorous, lens. Yeah, sure, the world is pretty horrible, people are often shit, good things never last............... now let's get on with our lives and try to find or create some kind of enjoyment and love wherever we can, while we can. Portraying the first part is important because it's true and because one way to not get stuck there is to be reassured that other people feel the same sorrow and despair just as keenly as you do. At least that's how it works for me.

@@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll Absolutely, that feeling of being seen is so important. I see the reaction a lot when dealing with music that has seemingly 'depressing' lyrics to most people, but to someone who has been going through that without the words or anyone relating to them, hearing someone else on that same page brings enormous comfort, and even motivation, "I'm going to care so hard despite all the bad".
