@Natalielawyerchick, did you know that this animation is based on a real court case? 2016 Georgia Case - the State of Georgia Vs Denver Fenton Allen. The judge name was J. Bryant Durham.
@@sixfeetundertheradar6080 I've only once been in a court as a defendant. (Traffic violation. Yeah, I wasn't travelling dumb, I was driving dumb, and what the hell, it was true, why waste energy on fighting it when I can pay the fine and go back to work?) But I have spent time in court with friends facing more involved charges, and I have a certain amateur enthusiasm for law and its workings. It's kind of like watching fencing, or chess, or -- G~d save and protect us -- cricket. If you understand what's going on, the technical details and the subtleties of strategy and tactics are endlessly fascinating. But if you don't ... prepare for boredom and confusion.
@@TindometariAcross the range of court channels I keep seeing your comments and wanted to let you know they're always enjoyable and it's confusing to see someone familiar. Cheers! ✌️🍍
I'm sure you'll be shocked to learn the judge recused himself from the case. The defendant tried the same thing with the next judge and got kicked out of the courtroom. He was eventually convicted.
Fyi, the animation was not done by Rick and Morty's creators; it was done by a fan of the show and posted up on RU-vid. The creator's channel name is "tiarawhy".
@@Allisonsaul it actually is yes. Justin Roiland found it, thought it was hilarious and made it into a Rick and Morty episode. When you hear judge Morty laugh mid-Sentence it's actually him laughing at how crazy this transcript was lmao
Really awesome to see a professional react to this animation. It's a bummer the original had to go down but seeing it pop up every now and then like is awesome.
@tiarawhy, Fantasic job on the animation!!! Thank you for doing that! I still rewatched it many times for a laugh or to cheer me up when I was down. Did Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland ever contact you to join you on their team? The animation is so good!!
@@minty_Joe Yep Justin got in touch with me, and I worked with him on a few things :). He tried to get this video back up on youtube but unfortunately due to copyright issues just couldnt go back up.
@@tiarawhy Yeah, that was unfortunate. But at least you were able to achieve your goal of awesome animation to the most wild real life situation. I'd say you won twice for this in that it opened more doors (I hope) for you to live your dream(s). Add this to your portfolio and who knows what success you'll gain in the future! I wish you nothing but the best!
"You have a constitutional right to be a dumbass" was my favorite line. It reminds me of when I was in high school and being a bit of a class clown. The principal called my mom, and interrupted an important meeting, I might add, to tell her about my antics (which, while admittedly were a bit of being a dumbass, didn't really cross any lines, I wasn't vandalizing the school or anything). She got mad at the principal (for interrupting her meeting) and told him (while on speakerphone so I could hear it) that "it's his God given right to make a moron of himself if he wants to". Soooo funny!
I would bet good odds the PD was deliriously happy when the threats started. He's now possibly a witness, conflicted out of dealing with any more of this guy's BS.
@@natalielawyerchick I managed to avoid taking a case once because, before he applied for a PD, the defendant tried to escape being taken into custody and had to be tackled by the sheriff. As a potential witness to an escape charge, he was conflicted to a different office.
Very glad another lawyer did a full reaction after Legal Eagle did a heavily cut version. It's amazing that despite it's obvious insanity, you still managed to teach stuff about the criminal justice system and the "tatics" people use to navigate it 😆.
The comment "How is he going to have grandchildren if he doesn't have any kids?" then right after the question gets repeated love it! I've never watched Rick and Morty completely- just snippets here and there - this was definitely worth watching with commentary!
Natalie, I’m rolling right now. I can’t believe the judge lost it like he did. The year sentence, absolutely hilarious. Saw you on panel with Schrödinger’s cat, been a fan since. Keep rocking it Natalie!
Natalie, found an article that says Allen was diagnosed with schizophrenia when evaluated by the state after pleading guilty but mentally ill. Victim was his smaller cellmate who prosecution says Allen targeted to boost his status. He was represented at trial. Curious if the public defender’s office generally assigns new counsel in these over the top situations or if that poor attorney had remain (realize it isn’t defendants call)... Look forward to your videos! Learned lots!!!
The man isn't a psychopath, he's a sociopath. And the judge is equally nuts to allow his composure to not only fall, but he doesn't try to make up for it at all, AND he keep going further. I see two men incapable of making a sound judgment on any other human being. Such is the legal system.
It doesn't really matter given those aren't real psychological diagnoses anymore. I agree that both parties were in the wrong, but that should be obvious; I think the attorney here is biased.
@@adrienfox6228 Oh, yes, exactly. Good comedians look at certain things that come out of real life and understand: "Oh, that is perfect as it is and if I try to 'improve' it I'll only spoil it."
@ 14.15 when I was drying my eyes from laughter & you stopped the video & said "unfortunately the judge has been sucked into" etc etc i nearly hyperventilated, I had no idea what you was going to say, it was just a priceless piece of video. Love your channel, stay safe & keep on smiling.
“...And if you say anything else, I’ll add 20 days to your sentence.” I think this is where the judge first messed up. He should have just held him in contempt for 20 days unconditionally, instead of adding his own ad hoc sentencing rule that led him to a 10 year contempt sentence which became no contempt at all and the judge lost his authority.
Oh my gosh! My day started off so poorly and this instantly remedied that, so thank you. I've watched this video before and I'm a fan of Rick and Morty. It's the funniest voiceover of a court transcript. You're always so professional and sweet so seeing your reactions to this was an absolute delight. Thank you for doing a reaction video to this, hahaha!
I am sad that I could only like this once. Given that Rick is considered by several interstellar and interdimensional governments to be Enemy Number One, and he's been incarcerated repeatedly in some of the worst prisons in the multiverse, I would assume that he knows many justice systems, inside and out.
This is 100% real. None of this is made up or embellished. This happened in Georgia, and it made the news in Atlanta. This is how the creators of Rick and Morty picked up on it, because Cartoon Network/Adult Swim is located in Atlanta. They actually read some of the transcripts on the evening news.
Oh, this WAS real. I The defendant, Denver Fenton Allen, was a white man and it took place in a Georgia court. I'm baffled by the racial slurs used. My then teenage daughter (with her friends) exposed me to this and we had fun laughong at the absurdity. If hs wasn't a killer, he eould have made excellent Sovcit fodder. So many lines that were priceless. Thanks
I was actually thinking about this video while watching other videos on this channel and was pleasantly surprised to see a reaction to it here. Great to see some legal explanation of the issues in this case.
kangaroo court noun / an unofficial court held by a group of people in order to try someone regarded, especially without good evidence, as guilty of a crime or misdemeanour. "they conducted a kangaroo court there and then"
To be fair, he pretty much did hold himself in contempt 🤣 At first I was confused by that statement but he did it…He did it on his own terms and everything 🤣
I was so excited for this to show up in my subscriptions! I’ve watched this video so many times! Pretty sure Legal Eagle even reacted to it. It just never stops giving.
I remember reading the transcript when it first hit the net. It was funny by itself, but then these guys did THIS...always hilarious to see :D Glad we got to see your first reactions :D
@@SchrodingersCatlive You're most welcome 👍I watched MANY hours of your videos on Sunday and thenRU-vid recommended Natalie's Channel. Sunday was a GOOD DAY😆 I've subscribed to your channel also 😉💖Keep up the good work Guys 👏👏👏👏👏 From Sara in London England 💂
Love your reactions, Natalie. The video gets really crazy when you realize, this is one guy playing Rick and Morty. It’s one of the creators talking to himself, in different voices.
I legit learned something from your reaction. Prior to coming across this animation, I'd never heard the word "discovery" in the way they're using it. I honestly don't think I've heard it come up in a courtroom drama or any court footage, so thanks for explaining it.
I ain’t gone lie, I first went into this video just looking for a reaction and when I saw it was 23 minutes and that you were talking every few minutes I was like omg is she just gonna say some random every time while pausing, but as I watched it I came to appreciate your insight into the actual court proceedings that were going on in the case, because yea it is comical what is happening but there is a crazy amount of deception and planning going on with that defendant on trying to get that case either in mistrial or other means, I did not know any of those going into it so I can appreciate the reaction and leave knowing I actually gained some knowledge on some of the procedures I haven’t encountered before, so I’ll like the video and share it, this was great 👍🏽 🔥
That judge was out of line when he called him the q slur. It doesn't matter what they're saying to you, the law can't harass anyone. He had the power to throw him out and give him more charges and he called him a slur instead of throwing him out.
Your reaction made this even funnier. I'm glad you did this video because you answered a ton of questions I had about this situation. I still don't get why the judge fell for the descendant's trap
This is one of the best things I've ever seen, thanks for reacting to it! On a more serious point, I assume that the defendant was lying and did actually have all the discovery information. It would be bizarre if the trial date was within two weeks and the defence still hadn't been given anything more than the indictment.
This deserves way more views! I really appreciate you clarifying this, of course the judge should not of lost his cool but I've seen to many people on elsewhere completely take the MURDERERS side on everything that transpired. Do they not teach context at school anymore? Also don't hate me, but your a damn good looking lawyer. Good luck on your legal career.
Just curious but would you have commented on a handsome lawyer? You knew it wasn’t kosher when you prefaced it by don’t hate me, apologizing beforehand doesn’t give you permission to do what you want? Just sayin’..
Hey there natalielawyerchick, I loved watching this. My mom, Lord rest her soul, was a District Court Recorder for over 35 years (in our county, District Court doesn't have "Reporters," like shown here), so at 11:04, I almost fell out of the chair laughing, could totally feel his pain.
@@thaddeuscosse9527 The original version of this was aired at Comic Con then posted by Comedy Central, was black and white, just back and forth stills of the main characters. With only the voice-overs it was still funny. All the secondary character designs were there, like the annoyed lawyer and the bailiff. I believe you can still find both the old clips on RU-vid. Several months later a channel called Tiarawhy began livestreaming their animation process for what became the full color version we saw in the reaction video. I watched it for hours because even that was fascinating. Then when they posted it finished, the thing got millions of views overnight. So many it attracted the attention of the TV network who had the video pulled. The animation was too good. People thought it was authentic Rick and Morty. That's why you couldn't find it here. However, it's probably still accessible by searching for Tiarawhy outside of RU-vid. The entire clip features a Morty opening intro Judge Wapner-style plus an end sketch, totally made up by Tiarawhy and dubbed by random voice actors. That short clip alone is worth finding the full thing.
I never thought the defendant would have a strategy to this which could have been disruption and trying to get his case appealed. Its nice to see this kind of perspective so thanks for that.
