This very rare, very open and very candid conversation with Rick Clunn not only makes you a better angler but it will make you better at LIFE. Thank you Rick! Please thank Rick by following his RU-vid channel youtube.com/@rickclunn543?si=hMfzv9xttFHLuJiB
When I won the Federation National Championship in 1991 and fished my first Classic some of the pros clearly weren’t happy about the Federation Anglers being there. I had never met Mr Clunn and he invited my wife and I to sit at his table at the first nights banquet! Rick is the best thing that ever happened to bass fishing!
I’m 33 and I can distinctly remember sunrises and sunsets being something significant and beautiful when I was 5 years old. My father would always take me fishing and one of the few things I can remember is the quiet of the morning and steam coming off of the water and knowing that it was special watching the sun rise and fishing until the sun set. Magical.
Thanks for watching & commenting. Your story tells me a lot about your good upbringing. I believe the sooner people start appreciating things most folks take for granted the happier they are.
wow, wat a guy... love so much of rick clunns views on life, so much wisdom in him... love his knowledge in the mental game ill forever have a deeper respect for rick after this episode too, i hope you get to say clunn gets it done one more time dave...
Thanks so glad you enjoyed this episode. Thanks so much for the kind words about Rick. He truly is a gift to us all. His outlook on life & fishing is so incredible & infectious. Thanks again for watching. Stay tuned as we are working on a lot of incredible stuff for 2024
Thank you so much Neil, I am glad you enjoyed it. Rick is so incredible. We did not deal with any of the controversial stuff that gets so many clicks on podcasts lately. However if you ask me the information Rick give is so much more important. Thanks again for watching
Wow . . . . I'm barely 1/2 way through this and it's a total blessing for Rick to share so much insight into not only his own life, but life in general . . . what a spectacular human. So much to learn from a person like this . . . and not just fishing. Spectacular epidode so far . . . . .
I am so happy to hear you feel that way. I felt the same way during the conversation but you never know if that same feeling is going to be felt by the viewer. Thank you for your support & kind words. Rick is a gift to us all
Rick, thank you for the reminder of a precious memory. I fortunately saw a glimpse of the Northern Lights for a few minutes as far south as Central Mississippi. It was a very cold, clear winter night. It was an unbelievable moment I spent with my son... 💙 Thank you, Dave, for having him on again. 🍺🎣
Wow Dave!! What a show!! The man is a bucket of knowledge and wisdom. I registered to marshal at Murray in May. What I wouldn’t give to be chosen to ride with him. Of course I hope to meet you as well. Maybe buy you a coffee one morning or even a cold “pop” one evening.
Thanks very much Steve, Rick is truly a gift to us all. I look forward to meeting you. Please make sure to introduce yourself to me at that tournament. I wish I could rig the draw for you 😂
I try to live a resolution each morning I wake up. It's not just January 1st. Everyday is day 1 of a new day for me. Live the moment, because you're not promised tomorrow... 🍺🎣
You know I’ve Never Personally Met Rick Or Had The Chance To Talk To Him. But I remember him responding to a comment I made one day on his RU-vid Channel or Facebook Page, and it feeling like we knew each other for years. I hope and pray he has many more years on the tour and neither of our creeks rise before I get to shake his hand.
He is a truly incredible man. He is a gift to us all. Hope you can make it out to an elite tournament this season to meet Rick. If you do please make sure to say hi to me also
When He Said “Prayer Is Incredible When It’s Pure!” It really put why his career and life is so amazing into perspective. We all need to inhabit that mindset . I’m gonna increase the purity in my prayer.
Just woke and watched this pod cast. It was Great. Rick Clunn is always a plethora of knowledge and gives nuggets of great information. Not just for fishing but life. Loved this interview!! God bless 2024 Dave
Thanks for the great interview. I try to never miss an interview with Clunn. I always get the feeling (if the interviewer actually knows what they are doing, such as in this case), and I know its sounds over-simplistic and a bit corny, but I always definitely feel like I have been let into his mind and his own little world that only he lives in. I confess that some of his "natural", Zen, Buddhists, one with nature and somewhat mysticism, etc. doesn't interest me particularly. I remember when he used to have, for lack of a better term, his mind journeys for others to study at his place that focused more on what I used to jokingly say was about, "being one with the one true tree that wasn't there". Just not my thing. However, how he weaves techniques of his bass fishing and the way his mind works in relation to that is totally fascinating. One of the best at a cerebral, well thought out, and logical way to approach the sport of bass fishing. The way he does that is totally unique. Nobody else does it that way. One area he is definitely spot on, is his opinions on the present bugaboo of bass fishing......Forward facing sonar. He has such a level head about it and a very unique perspective, particularly his stories about how it went with the old "Green Box" that Lowrance invented. As a little kid I remember that and the hullabaloo when paper burners first came out and then 2d, down scan, side scan, etc How "you-know-who" can see it so negatively and every facet of it (other than being the patron saint of anti-FFS) as being wrong and will "destroy the sport" is beyond me. Of course he also makes a good deal of coin off of being anti-ffs, which strikes me as disingenuous at best, but that's his present schtick. In my world, and apparently Rick Clunn's as well, is that it is another tool (obviously with the intent to help us catch more fish) and I particularly like how he presented it. Not from a visceral standpoint, which is so common these days, but framing it in the arena of knowledge acquisition done in a logical, rational, manner. Interesting how very few seem to grasp that the pelagic fish will adapt to it just like they have to every other thing we have ever come up with. It's just new and a very valuable tool, but it will go through its evolution as well. TPWD's Toledo Bend study of Jake Norman, Driscoll, et all showed a lot of what we thought bass did was mostly wrong, just like Clunn points out in this interview. Very early on and nowhere near as "loud" as he present anti-FFS crowd, but old Buck Perry (who Clunn mentions in this video) caught some flack for his work on offshore fish with his old spoon plug. If I may, Dave, I have a question for you. As you interview anglers all the time and in many different ways so I'd be interested in your insight about Clunn. My basic question is, what is so different to you (assuming there is one) about how Clunn thinks and at his core relates his mindset with bass fishing that differentiates his process from all others. What do you think makes an interview so unique versus others. Feel to expound on that at length, if you can. Again, thanks very much for the interview.
THE WHOLE WORLD NEEDS TO HEAR HIS WISDOM AND THOUGHTS ON LIFE !!!! this was the best interview by far . What an amazing man and athlete. Cheers 🍻 from B.C Canada
A Mercer podcast always leaves you in a state of happiness and content but a Mercer podcast with Rick Clunn will leave you a better person. Thank you Dave and thank you Rick for this absolute gem!
Thank you Dave for having Rick Clunn as your guest. I self reflect on my life and all my priorities that in essence are not important after hearing Rick. It truly inspires me to keep focusing on goals and in the fishing sense, my mental game. The only person I can think of that has the same type personality is my musical hero the late” the professor “ Neil Pearl of RUSH . Thanks again Dave . Awesome
I feel the only difference between now over previous technology when it came out is that everybody now has a way to complain, good or bad. Now you could have 1,000 people comment on how horrible something is and maybe 10% of that, and that's probably on the high side that it even affects. Everybody has a voice now when they probably should not. Lol, great show. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Rick is a legend And there's no disputing that. And I don't want to make my comment all about forward facing sonar, but what if the the unknown element is what makes the sport is what truly original and soo exciting with the element of surprise and earned knowledge like what great anglers like Rick Clunn have learned threw the years.. His knowledge is what keeps him in the top of the game not a computer
Nice Job Mercer on this interview. I get the impression it’s not easy to get RC to open up. You managed to ask the right questions at the right time, not an easy thing to do. The intriguing part is that there is so much going on between his ears that all we ever get are brief snap shots.
In terms of wisdom, Rick Clunn is a humble god walking among men. His last interview on this podcast is something that every aspiring young man should absorb before being cut loose into the world.
Rick 50 year's, AWSOME BUDDY 😊. WELL DONE 👏 . Nothing wrong with having done it for yourself ! Totally agree with your thoughts on 90% mental and fishing in the moment to be successful on the water
This is a great interview! After watching this, I know who Rick Clunn is, which is the goal of any interview. Dave Mercer, you are on par with Larry King!
""Would you still be as you are if you were at Exxon?" "No, I'd be dead" 😳 "..not happiness, but the PURSUIT of happiness." Daughter.... "Look! Rick Clunn is on tv!" Dave, the most PROFOUND episode to date! Wow! Awesome!!! ❤👏👏👏
I have an old lucky craft rick clunn deep diver still in the box. Found it at an estate sale along with a bill dance vhs tape. I'd love to have the lucky craft signed by rick.
Great show Dave. Great way to kick off the new year. Rick is one of the GOATS in the fishing world. Look forward to see what you bring the rest of the year. No resolutions for me. Probably wouldn’t keep them if I made them. 😊
Great Show Dave. Love watching Clunn since I was in Elementary, such a Great guy an mentor. I'm going to feel horrible for him when he watches the Tribunals when the EBS goes off. It's going to break my heart for him when he finds out, who was behind 9/11 an he was in his boat. Nesaria/Gesara!!
I could not imagine, what they were all feeling when they opened up that envelope before putting my dad to rest. Jed almost passed out when it read, " They Know Everything, signed by his own dad" Priceless 😂
@@factsoffishing I’ll do my best…lol. He doesn’t seem to do many podcasts, which is a shame given his contribution to the fishing world. As a Wisconsin kid, Al is my version of Roland Martin.
It is easy for Rick to say he isn’t a millionaire since he is worth more than 10 million dollars. Fishing is not a SPORT, neither is Chess. I am not saying it is not hard but a true SPORT will eat your body by 34. Rick is about 77 years old and still fishing.
