people dont get the amount of work and reps it takes to get to that level. and the breaths you take during the work, gives u the spirit of whatever you're trying to achieve.
Rick's insight into Karate is so much advanced...a real Sensei, who mastered the form, found his own (!) "truths" in the art, and defined his (for lack of a better word) "twist" to it. He realized the true meaning of every form, and the importance of harmony of mind, breath, posture, core, tension & relaxation... Very very valuable lessons/insights. Thank You very much for sharing. ATB from Germany
Finally a real great karate master. The high level is always the same and the inner principles of Tai Chi ( the real one) or Xin Yi , or any other martial art, at high level, are always the same. The problem we have in karate is that most of the pratictioners and master still stick to unnatural and wrong way to practice instead of evolve their art. I'm very happy about this video and the principles showed. I'm also very happy about master Hotton I didn't know and I'm very glad to follow him on youtube. This video makes great my day!
Thank you for sharing your voice and thoughts on RU-vid for the furtherance of the larger Shotokan community. Many say they practice karate-do, but do they really use their practice of a myriad of details as a constant reminder of the larger context and the largest of issues? Many who watch this appreciate your gracious reminders...
Watching these videos, creates some many "wow" moments for me. The glimpses of the essence within "true" karate as Sensei Rick Attempts to share is nourishing to my very being.
The best explanation for gyaku tsuki i’ve seen so far, as I was trying to find out why my right side gyaku was a little bit off, while my left one was fine. It drove me nuts! Now I can work on the sync with the hips (and the invisible arrow). Exquisite teaching by a man who wants to pass the knowledge on. The definition of a great teacher. Teaching without ego. Thank you sensei Hotton. Hi from Belgium!
Thanks so VERY MUCH for sharing your in-sights sensei Hotton. Always a pleasure...truly. I Always feel enriched inside after having watched your videos. Layers of information to unlock, so worth watching over and over again. You're a treasure on YT really, hehe. Love your "work". Respect, love and light sir. OSU!!!
"My hip, pressing into my elbow". Wow. And when he said "Aikido"..I thought "I knew it!". He obviously has had extensive training in some form of internal art. I've never seen such advanced movement in a pure Karate practitioner. The Deep knowledge. At :48 in, that little twisting redirection of his arm? That's a whole seminar on principles of movement.....If you are training with this instructor, you are lucky indeed.
Karate is him and he is Karate. This is Karate-Do. You become one with it, it becomes one with you. We all become one. The way of the empty hand (the way of emptiness). Connection through emptiness. Natures way.
Karate, in my opinion, should be kept simple. Sensei shows his spiritual side and passion in this session. He gets his points over well, with excellent detail and communication skills. On courses that I have attended in the past, I have found it frustrating that some of the Japanese Sensei's fail to get their points across. I'm afraid that training by snapping the joints is going to cause problems later on in life. I now have to train with a more softly approach with no snapping, no cracking sounds from my gi and relativity little kime. As one gets older the approach to training alters.
Extraordinary Karateka ......but what is karates future I wonder ? And one wonders how it took the shape it did .... through actual combat ? I doubt it .......
Awesome Karate Do, topped off with words of reality. I enjoy your instructional videos, they are very inspirational and excuse the expression "Meaty" Like as to say no frills just to the point. To the audience viewing this video Sensei Rick Hoton is one of the very few most knowledgeable and capable Karateka Whom is willing to share his art / lifestyle / world free of charge here on RU-vid. We are very lucky to have access to his methodology for training. Sensei Rick Hoton is world renowned and well respected by all in the Karate world. I personally have yet to meet Sensei Hoton but I do look forward to in the near future. To all students and would be students of Karate Do, I wish well. Sensei Buddy Hernandez Oss
His deep exploration into karate is amazing, but it cannot be taught only in one day seminar. One should really learn from him for years continuously. Otherwise it wont stick. One day seminar with him probably inspire the students to start one's own long journey
Hello Rick, Respectfully, One life, One moment. I carry that into and through all that I am. That is sufficient in all occasions. When that is no longer true, one or the other is no longer. I truly enjoy the enlightened ease you share of your talent. Thank you, smiling, George.
I really like Rick Hotton's approach to Martial arts about finding your own Karate. Although I practice Tomiki Aikido these videos have made me really think about my own budo journey.
Simply a BRILLIANT technician and TEACHER. He gives so much. I trained at The Takushoku Diagaku, Japan in '72 and '75 (for four years.) None of my Kenshusei or Senpais would pass on any knowledge...except MATA,MOTTO SEISHIN !!!
I really like this guy, but sometimes I wish he'd write a few key points on a note card or something and keep his talk a bit more on track. He alway's seems to flitter about from point to point in a stream of consciousness style and it's hard to keep up.
Hotton Sensei, did you happen to know Baranoski Sensei from Florida Karate Academy in Ft Lauderdale? I trained there early 80's, your focus and power remind me so much of his, the snap of his punch would leave red marks on your chest from the ghi smacking you :). I remember him telling us when he trained in Japan, they did floor exercises with someone on their shoulders.
So much rich and valuable content packed into this amazing video. Need to watch several times to take it all in. So eloquent about his karate and life. Would love to attend a seminar one day.
Rick, amazing to see all your videos. I always wondered what happened to you. Last time I saw you we were training nunchaku in your Sarasota dojo. I always considered you a good friend. Looking back I guess we have know each other more than 30 years since Lori and Maas Brothers. Scary how fast time has passed. Would love to hear from you.
Thank you for the kind words Davide. We are offering an online program that is a remote membership to the dojo. So far it has exceeded our expectation of connecting to folks from around the world. If you are interested you can email us at: into@sundaymorningkeiko.org here is the video link to the remote membership program: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aTCvUx4zaQc.html
:)That's great Bill, just remember we're all in it together! ...but really, I wear it to remind me to be open and enthusiastic like the day I walked in. A feeling I never want to forget.
