Teena Marie was actually heavily sick with the flu when she sang this. Rick was going to use a different singer because she was ill, but she came in and sang this in one take before going to the hospital. Teena Marie known as "The Ivory Queen of Soul"...

Thank you for explaining that! This was a different era. Everything was NOT TOXIC like it is Now! That's right I said it. And I can say it too because I was a Grown and married Black woman with 2 children who was about 27 years old when this was released. You see, Women respected their men and vice versa and this song reflected some who may have started from tradition seeking something freakier. Only to realize that "relationships" go Nowhere with that kind of mentality. Kind of like what's happening today with these so called "situationships" that are just excuses to add to these Girl's , not Women's BODY COUNT and ultimately destroys their chances of EVER finding a Man that will accept all of your demands, requirements and your Body Count. We had a word for that back in my day!!!! Like Kevin Samuels said (RIP Kevin), Buy a Dog and die alone! This was a MASTERPIECE of its time and should NEVER be measured by this Overly Sensitive Generation that thinks Nothing before Their Time was Relevant! Read a book. Get a Clue!

Rick James is so underrated as a vocalist, musician, and producer. He was a multi-faceted individual with a tumultuous life. Tina Marie was a powerhouse vocalist in her own right. They did have a bit of a toxic romantic relationship for a while but always spoke fondly of each others' talent. 💖💖

I was born in 81'. I grew up hearing the song. And my parents wasn't Rick James fans either. But I'm a lover of music, so I heard the song dozens of times. I didn't grow up religious and wasn't living under a rock. It's definitely one of the BEST duets of ALL TIMES..

The term "Use and Abuse" didn't refer to physical violence back in the 80s. It meant to take advantage of another person. In this case, he was expressing that he was a player that didn't appreciate women--- use them and move on (abuse them).

Clever anecdotes and word play were a must in song writing back then. You would have to be familiar with the lingo . Hes not bopping her upside the head. There are many ways to abuse someone. They just mean dogging each other out.

Artist, R&B back then were not necessarily like MCs are today. They didn't sing about their lives. They sang about topics, concepts, and ideas (without necessarily being personal). Rick James wrote this song, and when it was released, Rick was the #1 artist on Motown's label. Teena was relatively new. Rick was her producer and romantic interest for a time. Teena (and the rest of the then known universe) knew Rick was a wild boy and not the settling down type, so their relationship, both business and personal, didn't last.

It is and always will be the best duet of all time to me. Go do a review of Rick James & Smokey Robinson's song Ebony Eyes. It is in my top 10 duets of all time as well, maybe top 5.

I can honestly think of no better way to be introduced to these two as artists. Have to agree about it being one of the if not the greatest duet ever. Too many slept on Rick the artist due to the skits and his behavior.

I'm glad you liked it, but I didn't appreciate the narrative that you think he did "bad things" in the relationship. The word "abuse", let's face it, that's the word you're talking about, is referring to abusing the relationship itself. Use and abuse is a common saying when someone is manipulating the other person in the relationship. Never in the years and decades I have listened to this song that I even thought to go that route. This is a love song. R&B music. We don't talk about stuff like that.

I know he is over 40, He gotta be. And BLACK, how in the heck you never heard of this song or at least heard a song by both artists... It's obvious, you black but never really listened to much music by black artists. It's plain to see you was into the white artists more and that's fine. However, Just loosen up, have fun and listen to the song and STOP trying to analyze the song & being all deep with it. Like be for real...
