Rick had it all, the looks the voice and the fame, it never went to his head. I saw him in person a few month before his death and he treated people with the ultimate respect. Rick you were a class act!
All those who worked with him & fans all said he was the kindest & most generous guy! Great with which to work! Respectful & thoughtful! Truly...a class act all the way! ♥️🌹🌿
@@larryhackleman2093What's the name of that one where he sings Give back what you're getting Love is what you get? He did that one when he was in the Hardy Boys episode The Flickering Torch after he sang The Garden Party.
At 13 yrs old I saw him live. I begged my mother to take me. I’m 71 and still remember how he made me feel as a teenager. RIP Ricky, you made millions feel how I feel listening to your music. ❤️
You are so right but yet Elvis stays on the charts Ricky was a great musician a great voice great personality but yet we live in a country that idolizes a pedophile with a tremendous temper and a womanizer go figure I don’t understand how Elvis made it this far. And so idolized.🥲
At 70 I’m still watching the Adventures of Ozzie a n Harriet Nelson. Just because Ricky is so cute and such a charming personality. I cried the night he died and it still breaks my heart. 💔💔
I'm 72. When I was 18 - 20 years old, Ricky Nelson was my favourite singer. I used to admire at his good looks and think to myself,"you lucky b.........d. Not only are you famous but with those looks you can have any girl want" RIP Ricky.
Adrian Larkins so sad 😔. He seemed like such a sweet soul, and I'm young, so he was way before my time, but he was a great musician, and I totally respect him. Another great that least this world too soon was Eddie Cochran, and of course Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens- I mean, good Lord, what if those two guys had lived to be old. So tragic, it makes me want to cry 😥.
He was a good man from the 1950s singing a song about the wild 1960s while sporting a haircut from the 1970s and performing in the decade of the 1980s.
I was always a huge Ricky Nelson fan. He was underrated because he grew up in front of America on his family's TV show. But for my money he was one of the best of his era. He was also a rockabilly, which was kind of surprising for a man who grew up in Beverly Hills, California. ❤😊
I thought that this man was the most gorgeous of all singers. He had such a beautiful and unique voice. I still miss this man. He had so much pain in his life but he brought us so much joy. Always remembered , always loved , Rick .. rip.
He had a lot of joy too, though! This last year of 1985, he met his idol, Carl Perkins! They were arguing who would open for whom the next year! Also, Carl Perkins, was a Favorite of John Fogarty & Fogarty & Rick we’re going to do something together! Rick had a new album coming out, he just had to replace the Scratch vocals! Plus, he was gonna help Matthew & Gunnar with their careers! He found a lady to travel with, Helen Blair! She took great care of him, according to one of his twins! He had so much going for him! He really had a great last year! Remember the last chorus to Gypsy Pilot? “He lived everyday! He loved everybody & he hopes you do the same!”
They say the good die young. Elvis, Ricky, Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline, just to name a few. Loved Ricky and his music. That voice, those eyes, that hair, and I agree with @ranchhand333 Thanks for risking your life for all of us. Gone but not forgotten!!
Ricky Nelson was awesome I remember going to the Santa Clara County Fair San Jose California he played there every year February 11 2022 and still listening rest in peace mr. Nelson
thanks Rick for coming to San Diego years ago such a great show sadly the autograph you gave me was ruined by rain water years later but I have never forgotten your show
died 30 yrs ago in 85--I recall hearing about it. So sad--time has passed so fast. Hope he is in a good place--great performer and deserves our respect.
I really wasn’t a fan of the Nelsons at all...Until this song came out and the Dj in my hometown (NYC) explained the background story behind this record. Because you can’t please everyone so You have to please yourself!!!! Brilliant Brilliant!! The older I get the deeper I really appreciate Mr. Nelson as a person with a heart of gold and pure talent! Gone and never forgotten. Heavenly Peace Be with You! Robin from Harlem 💋
OMG!!! this is the bar i managed...just before he died in the plane crash. when i went full screen...all the memories came flooding back!!! i was so happy to have him there!! and i enjoyed him sooo much!! he did such a great concert for us!!
This one was in August of that year. The last place he played was at PJ’s Alley in Guntersville, AL, owned by a former band member, Pat Upton, now also passed. Rick was scheduled to play 2 shows both sold out & was asked to play a 3rd which he did to another sold out crowd! Pat Upton never got over that the guys didn’t just take a commercial flight as he suggested, when the plane delayed them by 4 hrs with mechanical problems.
Ricky Nelson was one of a kind, I don't think that I missed to many shows of Ozzie and Harriet, I though Ricky Nelson has the most dreamie eyes when he singed & was so very sexy . but he gone but not forgotten R.I.P.
Wow! You were very fortunate! Too bad he didn’t take Pat’s advice & go commercial. What a difference that might’ve made! I heard he did 3 shows for Pat at PJ’s!
I grew up with Rick Nelson, first I was a child when he was on Ozzie and Harriet. Than later, when he did this song I was married with 6 children. Now his twin sons are coming to Yuma to a 'Ricky Nelson Remembered' tribute. As long as his kids are around, he will live forever!
I went to a concert at the Empire in Liverpool England to watch the great man.Support was Seals and Croft. Sad to report the theatre was only a third full. The guy was a legend!!
Heard this song in the grocery store today... haven't heard it in a while. A lot of truth to this- you really can't please everyone... sometimes you do need to just please yourself! Thanks for posting!!
saw him in australia not long before he died, lately a friend was playing his old music ,told him about garden party, had not heard of it,now, like me, said it is his best song
REST IN PEACE MR NELSON. THIS REMINDS ME OF MY BEST FRIEND AND " BROTHER THAT I NEVER HAD " ARNOLD. HE WOULD SING THIS SONG ALL THE TIME.REST IN PEACE BROTHER. I MISS YOU A GROUP. COVID TOOK HIM.
Ricky Nelson was the Handsomest man I ever new in the music business since Ozzie and Harriet. RIP. Great vocalist leader of the pack I remember in 1959.
This song takes me back....in my room listening to am radio, I loved my room....while mom in the kitchen fixing something up....it was only me and her.
Garden Party (released in 1972) is one of first country rock songs in music history and shows Rick Nelson as a good songwriter after his time as a rocknroll and teenage star between ´57 and ´64. It´s a classic and one of the best songs Rick Nelson ever recorded.
Watching this clip, I had such a neat feeling, but filled with foreboding...seeing that this was recorded in August of 85'...and knowing that he had just 4 months left to live. This was probably one of his last concerts. It was like watching footage of the Space shuttle challenger on that fateful day. Ricky was one of the greats who never truly was given his due as an artist. It seemed a shame that just as interest was picking back up, the unthinkable happened. He'll always be remembered.
Ricky Nelson had been a part of my childhood and high school days. I love most of his songs , particularly " Someday " , one of my all time favorites . He will forever be one of my favorite singers of all time !!
I got to see him peform in the early 80s in Baltimore, MD. He was just fantastic. Wore a beautiful blue shirt, sat on a stool and played. Just great. Gone too soon.
I loved Ricky Nelson. I don't get emotional when a celebrity dies, but when Ricky died I'm not ashamed to admit that I had tears in my eyes. I used to listen to the Ozzie & Harriet Show on the radio before it went on television in 1952. Ricky used to get allot of laughs as a wise cracking little kid.
Phil, I also was a teenager growing up in the 50s, born in 1943, and I had four favorite celebrities that I idolized. Ricky Nelson, Annette, Elvis, and Mickey Mantle. There were probably others but these were my favorites. I regret that in the summer of 1985 Rick was preforming at a fair in Carmi Illinois not too far from my hometown of Robinson and I did not attend the show. Thanks for your comments.
Wow.... amazing. Visited one of his son's house and he had the original "yellow paper" pad sheet that he wrote this song on. It was in a frame, hanging on the wall. Both of his son's are amazing too, both as performers and individuals!
Rick’s son, Gunnar, has that hanging up in his home in TN! Nice you got to meet him! I love Nelson! They’re a great band with a great sound of their own!
@CaliforniaSheri I followed Ricky since 1966 .. when my Mom first introduced me to his Million Sellers album and Have Been a follower ever since .. thanks Sheri
u got it right mrwestender...i saw him when i was much younger at this type of venue in 1985 in edmonton alberta canada...he was great and it was rick in those days and the concert was actually a hoot
And I LOVE this song, first time I heard it, it was with my mom in a car driving across half Sweden to my Grandma, I was about 8 years old. And every singel day from I heard it, I rememberd every word from this song (but I couldn't speak or english) and I knew how that song went in my head. And from that day, I love country music thanks to my mom.
I was 1 when he died in a plane crash. I never knew of him until I listened to the Common Man Dan Cole. Great tune. I am happy that I was given direction on this song.
Lets not forget Rick's fabulous Stone Canyon Band members, all very sadly lost, like Rick, in that terrible plane crash and fire. Was so much fun to watch Rick and Dave and their Dad and Mom - so many years ago......You never get tired of all the laughs, as well as the great music performances of Rick. Really makes you feel good to step back in time to those good old days and 'The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet'. Rick was a comedic scream even as kid and in his later years portraying himself as a fraternity member with his best friend/sidekick 'Wally Plumstead' (Skip Young) - was just too much.... Give the show a look - you'll be real glad you did...... RIP Rick .......THANKS so much for all the music, joy and laughter, you gave us......!!!
My aunt loves Ricky, and thanks to her for introducing me to great music when I was younger.. she also loves Jim Croce... and my kids sing the songs still today!
REALLY listen to this song and you'll hear top notch players in support. Rick always took pride in the talent he played with. Plus, amazing singers backing him up. Great live version. Thanks for sharing!!
No man could ever be as sexy with his eyes closed while performing. That was his magic for me. Although he was much older he was a crush, and continues to be. Keep the negative comments away!!!!!!
Learn listening and talking to my parents and they told me about the show he was on with his family so sad he died so young in a damn plane crash he was a good singer, I grew up watching his sons sing on MTV they were called the Nelsons and were great singers and guitar players to 😎😥🤘🤘
I was truly blessed to meet David and Ricky on the set of "Ozzie and Harriet." I was 12 years old and thanks to Ricky's fan club president, Connie Mueller, who was also Ozzie's assistant, I was able to interview the two brothers for my elementary school paper. I saw Ricky later--when he recorded his 'live' album at The Troubador in Hollywood around '70 or so. He was an original. I was managing The Beach Boys at the time & I've been blessed to have known & worked with many of my heroes.
when i was 14 (a long time ago), oh, how i loved ricky nelson. in interviews that can be seen here on you tube, even though from hollywood royalty, he was always so gracious and self deprecating. i do wonder what would have become of his career. may he rest in peace and power.
Rick Nelson was sadly underrated solely due to "Ozzie and Harriet." In truth, he was an astute songwriter and a strong and stylish musician. "It's all right now, I learned my lesson well -- you see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself," for my money is one of the greatest lyrics in all of popular music.
He wrote one of the best highly RATED songs of all time .. that people paid attention to the Lyrics an the story .. so he deffo got some credibility an rating But ofcourse cos of how he began. He wasn't gonna break away from that completely .. but I guess that's why this song was born ..
A great underrated song Ricky Nelson has a strong beautiful voice that touches everyone's heart good guitar player great song writer great performance shame he didn't see his son's become famous I love you Ricky Nelson 😎🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸🌹🌹❤️❤️🏋️🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🎸🎸🌹
The last time I read Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time, Rick Nelson was listed at 91. There was also a book released by Rolling Stone in 1982 (something about 25 years of rock 'n' roll where they rated the performers and each of their albums). It was written that Rick Nelson got a bad rap because he got his start on the family TV show, but that he was actually very talented.
August8th1969 You know rolling stone lists are stupid, Last one i saw had Elton at 50 somthing, even if u hate him he should be way higher than that. Just saying.
He wasn't just a pretty face pop star and a heart throb. He was a musician and a songwriter. Garden Party is one of those great songs that - I don't know how to say it - touches something deep and magical. Reminds me of a Dylan song. Poetry.
He was a great talent, truly one of a kind-sorry I never saw him do a live show. Too bad it ended for him and the band in a plane crash. I always heard he was kind to the fans and did a great show.
+Michael Smith I remember when Ozzie and Harriet came on every week and Ricky was my hero. I tried to comb my hair like him and look like him but I was only twelve so it didn't work out like I planned. But he was a great talent anyway
+Michael Smith Ahhh....I saw him when I was 10 years old at Knotts Berry Farm in '76....this song was my favorite of the show. I must add that the show made me not mind at all that I was missing out on riding all the cool rides in the park. It was a good show.
Thank you, Mr. John Fogerty for singing Garden Party on the Album "The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again". This was my way to back to Mr. Rick Nelson. His Music ist a part of my life......Say Hello to Mary Lou.....
"But it's all right now. I learned my lesson well. See, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself." I find this lyric to be profoundly wise
One of the most handsome performers to come out of the states. His singing needs no comment - just so perfect, especially the slow numbers. Sadly missed by many of us.
The guy had it all, talent, looks and a great voice. Maybe the only TV idol in history whose musical talent really effected rock 'n roll. I am a huge fan.
Never given enough credit for his contributions, made rock mainsteam, first music videos, and stayed true to his music, and put together a hell of a band! RIP Ricky
Debbie Rogowski's earlier comment was correct. I'm 70 years old, and what the song is about is, that people knew exactly who Ricky Nelson was, but they wanted to hear his many songs that had been #1 on the charts, and he did all new stuff that he had made, and the audience were very disappointed. Can't blame them, his old songs were fantastic songs. If he were still here today and had a concert, I would want to hear his hit songs from the 50's. Yep, I'm 70 years old, and he was without a doubt, probably the most talented singer from the 50,s, including Elvis, Chuck, Frankie and Fats.
He was on the upswing in the US! Almost had an album ready to be released in the new year...they just needed to replace the scratch vocals! Also, he met his idol, Carl Perkins 2months before the plane crash...they were arguing who would open for whom! Carl had said he would open for Rick’s band! Imagine the thrill?! Also, he met John Fogarty who also had the same idol, at The Class of ‘55 recording with those made famous by Sun Records! They all came to sing together! Rick sang with Carl Perkins, Marty Stewart & another from the UK! The Judds were singing, the Cash’s were singing, John Fogarty, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison & a bunch of others! That was also in September! Fogarty also idolized Rick & they were planning on doing a few things together! Plus, he was going to retire that plane when he got home & help his twins with their careers! He had plenty going for him & a new love in his live who really took care of him, according to one of his twins! That was probably one of his best years, believe it or not! Love to him & his band! ♥️🌹🌿
Always watch Ozzie and Harriet growing up. And watched Rick grow upon the show as well. Had all his records. He was a great singer. So sad when he died!
