Rick Rubin is responsible for countless evolutions in music over the last 30 years. From founding Def Jam to working with the Beastie Boys, to reviving Johnny Cash’s career, to being brought in to save ‘Yeezus’ last minute. He is behind hundreds and hundreds of beloved records. Yet somehow, even after absorbing the entire history, it’s still difficult to explain the legacy of a man who doesn’t appear to do much while doing everything at the same time.
Special thanks to Justice Der for his contributions to this video.

I met him on an airplane when I was around 14. I didn't know who he was at first. My mom had severe anxiety from having to fly and he started to talk to us and calmed her down. He asked me what my favorite band was and I said "Slayer" and he replied "oh I've worked with them" and laughed like he had a small part. I got his name and told him I had just bought Reign In Blood and South of Heaven and he advised me I'd know his part once i got home lol Super cool guy and very very chill.

Rick being a lifelong meditator really seems able to control or atleast calm these angsty feelings and just remind people of what matters. As an aspiring music producer for the last 20 years, Rick Rubin has always been an idol and influence to me in a spiritual sense. He works purely on instinct coupled with experience. Part of being a great producer in my opinion is understanding people and their strengths as well as their flaws and getting the best performance possible through the beauty of their imperfections coupled with their talent and their presence in the moment. I think that Rick figured that out a long time ago. He is one of the all-time greatest music producers in history and has done it in several different genre's which is a testament to his approach. I also would like to say this is not only the best documentary I've ever seen by far on Rick Rubin, but one of the best on anything I've ever seen period. Well done.

My favorite Rick Rubin moment was when the Red Hot Chili Peppers (my favorite band) was about to release their new studio album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, in 1991. Anthony Kiedis wrote this song about his struggles of trying to get rid of drug addiction. This was also just 3 years after the tragic death of a founding member, Hillel Slovak. Kiedis wrote a poem about how he felt with all this awful turmoil in his life. The song title comes from when he was fucking around with gangster and drugs instead of spending time with people who really trusted him, his friends and family. Kiedis wasn’t even willing to show the poem to Rick Rubin, but Rubin insisted and thank god he did because it is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard, and honestly, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful songs ever. The chorus is the mantra I play in my head every day to just keep moving on in life. To correct past failures and mistakes and appreciate what you have in life. Thank you Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rick Rubin. This song has made me a better person. I don’t ever wanna feel like I did that day Take me to the place I love, take me all the way

@@reimourrpower9357 He's arguably the greatest. If we're going by timeless hits that are the most played throughout hip hop, especially by DJ's at parties, in battles, and the DMC, no other producer is close to Rubin. He produced 5 of the most played hip hop bangers of all time, that all have tremendous energy due to his signature sound, and will probably last as long as humans exist. Dre, Kanye, and Swizz Beats are for sure contenders, with Premier, Timbaland and the Neptunes deserving honorable mention ... but most people don't get high enough to be into Dilla or Madlib, Pete Rock and Q-Tip didn't make anything that doesn't sound dated (which is what gives TROY timeless charm though), and Mantronix made electro (obv wouldn't be a contender anyway). Not sure how "minimalist" fits at all either. Rick Rubin's signature sound is detailed big drums that have a live sound to them but are compressed and super punchy, with different great fills at the end of every 8 bars and frequent use of turntables to alter the drum kit sounds. Can't do work like that with no hands.

This is my favorite video of yours so far. You really delivered. And learning so much about this iconic human was incredible. Truly inspirational, thanks Jake!

The man is a legend, and if I could record with anybody it would be him. I met him once 20 years ago when he was scouting a band that I was the roadie for, he walked into the venue unknown and unannounced. I recognized him, but barely anyone else did. Without calling him out, I asked him what he thought of the band, he said something about liking their energy or vide or something like that and that was it. I told the band after the set that he was there. They ended up signing with Epitaph.

the conversation between andre 3000 and rick rubin is so cool to hear after listening to andre 3000's jazz album.. it's cool to hear andre 3000 say that the wind just blows a certain way that led him to this jazz album. magical seeing his integrity flow through artists

I will say this, Rick has tuned in and helped several bands. His personal experience and touch are unexplained but he's the best in the business. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were like many bands good but became great with Rick in the mix!!! Thanks Rick
