Rickie Fowler and Butch Harmon show you how to fix that drive slice.
Transcript:
Well, you've been bombing this driver lately.
Let's see you hit a couple.
You got it, Butch.
What in the world was that?
Man, I'm outta here.
Well, we all know you don't hit drives like that
with a big slice, but in reality, when you're at home,
at the club, and you see guys on the range,
or when I'm here at the golf school,
most the people we see hit a weak slice.
Let's talk a little bit about why they hit slices
and what causes it.
I think a lot of it starts from the setup
and from the way they take the club away.
I mean, talk about amateurs, I mean definitely
have a big gap in their game.
It's consistency off-the-tee, proper setup, takeaway,
just allowing themselves to make a good swing.
One of the first things that you and I did
when I went to work with you a couple years ago
was to change your posture a little,
'cause you had your head buried down in here,
you couldn't make a full turn,
so let's see ya set up to one in a good athletic position.
Remember, golf swing is an athletic move.
You gotta be ready to respond.
The setup is the key and being a consistent driving
the golf ball, hitting a lot of fairways,
so we'll see if we can clean that up a bit.
If you can see the lines are square here.
See his chin's up off his chest.
You get good posture.
Now, from here, see this move that Ricky made right here?
This is one of the biggest changes that we made
in your golf swing a couple years ago.
You used to take the club outside your hands going back,
and I see that a lot in the average player.
So we had you go there.
You've actually incorporated that
into your waggle on every shot.
Yeah, just give myself a feeling of where I wanna go.
The first movement off the ball is so crucial,
making sure that at times, we talked about being deliberate,
making sure it's the right tempo.
You get to quick off the ball,
and that throws off the whole swing.
Boy, I'll tell you what.
Tempo's so important 'cause the high handicaps
you and I see, they swing as hard as they can
just in case they hit it.
They have no tempo.
Alright, let's go up to the top of the swing and stop,
and I'll show everybody what causes the slice.
Okay, you're in a good position here.
When you make a good swing, your weight transfers,
your hands and arms just drop to this position.
With a high handicapper with a slicer,
they start with all their motion over the top.
Club comes down too steep and wipes across,
and they've got no chance.
It's gonna look like a wounded flamingo
coming in for a landing to the right.
It has no power in it at all.
Yeah, the big thing, having the lower body.
That has to really drive and get everything going
to create that power and get in the right position.
A good thought for the average guy
is when you feel like you transfer your weight,
let that right shoulder stay back a little
and just feel like you're hitting the inside
of that golf ball and swinging it out to the right.
Remember, to get out of hitting the ball to the right,
you have to swing to the right.
What do you think you've picked up
in the past year-and-a-half?
About , yards on your drive, maybe?
Yeah, easy yards.
That's nice, how come you didn't
Straight and yards. give me yards?
Nah, you're passing it on to me.
Okay, that's good.
Let's see you bomb one, here.
Show 'em how it's supposed to look.
Oh yeah, yeah, that looked like one of those drives
you powered down at the TPC when you won this year.
Those ones worked out just fine.
Let's just keep doing that.
You got it, Butch.
Hey, dude, no more slices for you.
You got that right.
Hey, cheers my man. Cheers.
Uh, really?

I'm no pro but I'm a certified instructor. I used to struggle with this in my 20's. The simple fix for a weekend hacker? Focus on keeping your elbow straight, and don't 'kill it.' This isn't baseball. Mechanics will send the ball farther than your muscles in this game. Control. Don't rush your back swing, just let it flow. Good luck!

If people made a concerted effort to hit the ball at 50% of their power they would be amazed at how much further the ball travels when it is struck properly. It's much easier to strike the ball properly when we slow the tempo down, in fact it's the best way to learn how to fade and draw the ball at will and once we've learned all of those things at 50% speed, the trick is to go to 55% speed and if you get really good maybe 60% (at which point you'll just be killing it and controlling it).

This advice actually gives the amateur a slice! The club outside the hands going back is a great first move for 90% of golfers. It facilitates an inside out swing path and give you the ability to hit the ball a long way with slow to medium swing speeds.

I too played baseball through HS varsity. Only golfed a few times a year during those 18 years. Now that I'm in my late 30s and focusing on my golf game, it has been a challenge to "un-baseball" my golf swing. I just have to remind myself "slow down"! Control creates accuracy which then creates distance. Don't swing for the fences and "hope" to connect. Slow down until you start connecting consistently, the power will eventually follow.

If you watch Koepka's slo mo swing, it looks like he takes the club back "outside his hands" which Harmon says is a no-no, yet Koepka has no issues hitting it. It also looks like Ricky hinges early to get to that parallel spot, I may have that wrong. Obviously these guys are pros who can figure out how to get to the right end position to hit the ball better than anyone. Just wondering about the discrepancy, do most take it back like RIcky?
@JR-xj2vr
@JR-xj2vr 4 года назад
One thing you see with every great player is fully extend right arm just after impact. Doing so guarantees the club head is rotating and closing which greatly decreases the chance of a slice. If that right arm never fully extends, you just left the club face open and you know what happens next.....
@otomotom1879
@otomotom1879 Год назад
Exactly 💯
@Werdnasemajjamesandrew
@Werdnasemajjamesandrew 4 года назад
Weirdest tip to adjust for slice aim heavy heel. It works to get it straight but your driver is going 200 yards. Gotta aim inside out. Back arm needs to come over front arm on follow through. And of course square it up on the back swing instead of the swing itself that over correction causes wasted energy. My slice has dissipated but I’m weak hitting 230 at 6’1” 185 pounds. If I was any good I’d be hitting 270 carry. Long story short of you can’t keep 50 things in your head, your casual and want to be barely okay just aim heel side forget everything but head down keep legs steady arms stiff aim heel side and backswing and swing at the same speed without thinking about it too much you’ll still suck but ya might beat your buddies.

Whenever someone says golfers who slice are often coming over the top too much it never makes sense to me. I was slicing all the middle holes of my round yesterday. On the 12th hole I figured I was leaving the club face open so I came over the top and hit the straightest drive in my last 5 rounds 🤷‍♂️ It was only 252 so I definitely didn't swing as hard as usual but still I don't get it. Many pros have a slightly open clubface at setup (like Jason Day). I do too. It’s an anti hook setup, but you can still hit a slight draw with it. It’s just a little insurance to make sure it doesn’t go left for those of us who play a draw. It can also be used to play a slight fade. Lots of reasons.

Its not as dramatic as that Mathew. I hear what your saying. Off the ball the hands are inside the club head, but on a natural one piece take away. Have you seen any of my videos yet?

the reason is that most golfers take the club back on a path with the head inside the hands so teachers will over correct that mistake by having people take the club back on a path outside the hands. an on path takeaway would be one where the clubhead covers your hands on the 1/4 part of the swing (the takeaway) and the1/2 part of the swing (the downswing)

What are you talking about lol he clearly pointed out a lot of important tips. Good form. Chin up. Tempo of swing. The way to raise your driver on the back swing. Lots of good information.

Get your back to the target and leave it there for a moment as you start down.

2.58 slow motion and the club is still outside the hands. So its only a feeling butch is teaching and actually putting the club inside

@@gamalsankara1388 .. because I have eyes.. and his old swing with his flat left arm, that sits a little below his right shoulder in the backswing has returned..

I cured my slice with 2 easy adjustments. #1 tee ball low. #2 stand closer to ball. Reaching is an automatic slice.

I don’t struggle with my irons: I just use lighters ones with less heat! And insofar as my drivers, Uber!
