It's almost annoying how nice the best players are! I was at GIT summer 86 before my senior year in high school and all of my teachers were unbelievably kind and helpful. They all wanted to share their knowledge so others could know the feeling of playing but they also cared about me personally and looked out for me, being alone in Hollywood at 17. They inspire and that is what Rick does for me. Not only to play great but to be great to others. To take care of one health. I'm a new sub but I can already see change in me. Thanks man.

Paganini and Beethoven (heck, even Vivaldi and Mozart) didn't have any soul because they played too many notes (sarcasm). Just because you love your pentatonic, doesn't mean virtuosos like Rick are soulless. This shit is gold!

This vid is probably the BEST 80's Ballad improv on RU-vid ....Never heard one play a flurry of notes with great precision and musicality... This is some technical wizardry fused into a super-melodic phrasing...Most players tend get ''repetitive'' and will run out of licks and ideas as soon as they approach halfway through .... Rick is a different beast ..WOW spectacular playing!!!

Just amazing! This takes guitar playing to another level. Cant imagine how many hours of practice this equires.
@Amber57499
@Amber57499 7 лет назад
Jerry Bjørnsen It's not about how many hours, but how he practiced in general. Check out his fingers when playing. They barely move. Rick sat down for hours and played everything so slowly until every tiny bit of excessive movement was eliminated, then he sped up and so on. Not to mention the crazy theory he puts on that fretboard in real-time. Most of us would fall asleep only thinking of that, but Rick here is THE example that it really paid off. He is doing extreeeeeeeemely well ;)
@stevebrule9343
@stevebrule9343 5 лет назад
Amber57499 yeah but he still has well over 20,000 hours of practice. That matters a hell of a lot more than “how” he practiced.

Don't take this the wrong way but it just sounds like you're blasting through notes as fast as you can and it does sound improvised... But the other version you've done to the exact same track is a totally different story it sounds like you're listening to the actual chord changes and the notes you're landing on and you're phrasing and timing is outstanding...its one of the best on RU-vid.

No offense man, Rick is awesome I wish I could play like him, But there are some stupid good players on this rock, like Guthrie Govan, Steve Via and Paul Gilbert that you might want to listen to before crowning anyone rock God. What I like about Ricks playing is the feel, anyone can play fast, Eddie Van halen can fly up and down the fretboard too and hit dive bombs, but he plays with feeling and grove. It's not always about playing 1000 notes a measure...All this being said, Rick your tone is killer (fractal I'm guessing) and you remind me of Steve Lukather

To clarify, those are the names of the modes that belong to the major scales. BigEdWo is right. As Guthrie Govan said, 3 modes fit nicely into major, 3 into minor and the last (Locrian) Is horrible aha. If in doubt look for the 3rd, it will give you (in most cases) an indication whether the scale/mode is going to have a major or minor tonality.

The only... the ONLY thing that could've added to the enchantment is the inclusion of his right hand so that we could see the role it played in mastering this melodic maelstrom. Thank you. That is all. I must now go and decide whether to face my guitar or just hang myself in the garage.

hooler47pp The problem is. What to practice. If I only have one hour per day, how should I spend that hour? Thank you for the response though;.
@dracumelenios
@dracumelenios 7 лет назад
One hour is enough if you do it right. Do half an hour or more of intense exercises with a metronome and then use the rest doing creative play over a backing track. Plan your own exercise regime, because this depends on your skill level and the areas you want to push. Typically you would prioritize your left hand strength and accuracy, learning the C major scale in 3-note-per-string format all over the neck. It will take months to learn the fingering well but will worth it as every position is a different mode, meaning you will be able to play on every chord you hear just by moving the shame shapes around the neck. Find someone that will teach you about how to practice and don't bother with licks much. Realize that you could be playing all day with no progress if you don't do the things it takes to have progress. Don't even bother to start if you are not obsessed with guitar. If you are not, just play for fun and be happy, there is nothing wrong with that.
