I know I should be proud, as a Brazilian, to see how far Jiu Jitsu has gone. However, it is quite sad to see the best guys leave my country because they have no recognition around here. On the other hand, I'm pretty glad they found the respect they deserve in America. Also, Jiu Jitsu would probably have vanished, were it not for the Americans and their 'land of opportunity'. So, with mixed feelings, I have to say thanks to all Americans.
Rickson came to Sacramento 5 years go, 2 months after the seminar in Miami and he show us his amazing stuff and couldn't get that out of my head and he's like a "God" in jiu-jitsu, wanna flow like him, someday :-)
I miss Rickson being in the sport. Back in the earlier pride days, He, Royce and Royler were such huge inspirations to me when I first started out with MMA.
It's good to see how Helio Gracie and Maeda Mitsuyo are being acknowledged in the background of this place. Too many martial arts practitioners forget their instructors and the lineage they come from
my biggest wish would be one day with rickson, i want see every movement, every single stretch or push up, armbar he does.. it is an honor to hear him!!
Yeah, I agree with George. Marcelo Garcia's system is so well thought and highly effective. Many people highly praise him and he's a 4xADCC champion for a reason =)
@Chevalier765 In Brazilian jiu-jitsu from black to 6th degree the person wears a regular black belt with a 4” to 5” red bar on one end. For 7th and 8th degrees they wear an alternating red and black belt, similar to the red and white belt used in judo for 6th, 7th, and 8th degrees. And for 9th and 10th degrees they use a red belt, just like judo uses for their 9th and 10th degrees.
@8ringsofshaolin Actually in BJJ, the red belt is not reserved for the original 5 brothers (10th dan). Red belts are also used by 9th degrees. Look up some 9th dan like the late Carlson Gracie Sr., Robson Gracie, Reyson Gracie, Rorion Gracie, Alvaro Baretto, Joao Alberto Baretto, Flavio Behring, Francisco Mansor, and you’ll see that they all wear red belts. To get your 9th dan red belt you must be a minimum of 67 years old. Rorion is only 58 and got his red years ago from Helio.
It looks amazing to finally see the black and red around Rickson's waist. Come years, there will be a red belt there where it belongs. I can only pray Rickson comes someday close enough for me to go and see him, beside Royce and Helio, he has been my largest influence to study BJJ, and IMO he's still the best.
@Chevalier765 Since there are no longer any 10th degree red belts alive in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, he has basically two options. One is to be awarded his 9th degree red belt from another 9th degree red belt. There are several 9th degree red belts alive, including two of his cousins and his eldest brother Rorion. However, I doubt that he would ever accept rank from anyone other than his late father Helio, especially from his brother. The 2nd option is that in about 10-15 years he promotes himself.
I dont know if its this specific kimono , but i know he has sponsored a brand in an advertisement callled KI International . hope that can be of some help to you .
@01Proust BJJ was born out of Judo and thus uses Judo throws. To get a blue belt (the first belt after white) in a Gracie school you basically have to be able to win a street fight. They test you on things that wouldn't be allowed in a sport fight. More important to defend yourself at that point then to win a sport fight. Also Rickson is a Judo black belt too so he could probably hold his own in a Judo tournament.
@01Proust I already stated that BJJ incorporates Judo throws. I'm not sure why you are saying that a Judoka learns everything he needs in his first belt and imply that a BJJ student wouldn't. You have to be proficient at Judo throws to get your blue belt in BJJ. Plus I haven't found any Helio Gracie street fight videos considering there wasn't widespread use of personal video cameras until the man was near his 70s. Rickson used Judo throws and then BJJ on the ground in his street fights.
Idk what your talking about BJJ works for me at my job. I'm always getting picked on because i'm small. I have alot of scars from being stabbed or scratched. It's help me survive in a rough part of dallas. Sadly, i'm a college student living in the hood. I'm still around thanks to BJJ so idk what your talking about.
@Chevalier765 Actually he is 7th degree (I almost sure of that, the same of my teacher's master Rolker Gracie, Rickson's brother). The 10th cannot be given anymore. The maximum a figher can reach is 9th. Only the master of the past, and some of them are alive today, got the 10th degree.
If you want chu be great in jiu-jitsu it is better chu have dedication, patience and understanding in this kind of game for you chu be able chu succeed.
You have to partially blame the creator of Judo himself, Jigoro Kano. In the early 1900s, Kano, who loved throws more than groundwork, saw that students were spending more time on the ground instead of utilizing throws. He didn't like that. Throwing was his #1 passion. So in 1925, Kano set up new rules that limited time on the ground and made it mandatory to use a throw on your opponent. It only got worse when Kano's dream of Judo becoming a Olympic sport was realized.
For an explanation of the Valente Brothers logo go to their website section entitled "our logo." Remember that Combat GJJ is much more than grappling unlike sport GJJ. Who's opinion should we believe with respect to the Valente Brothers being legit or not...souzajr. or Grand Master Helio Gracie and all his sons???
@ordaboy Not sure why your replying "rorion is a red belt" to me, since I mentioned it on two of my previous four posts. He's been a red belt since 2003.
ROYCE and CHARLES GRACIE have a book of BJJ SELF DEFENCE forstreet fighjt! Also a good guard OPEN or close can save your butt in MMA and street! Look forBJ PENN book of MMA and you see that not only cloe but ,DE LA RIVA,ALAN GOES , HALPH and butterfly have use in MMA!
I do Krav Maga. I love it. It has Muay tai, Jiu Jitsu. It's a true combat style of martial arts. Fights often do go to the ground. I also do BJJ. Krav & BJJ is a wonderful marriage. Krav is a hard style where BJJ is a soft style. Both highly effective. I'm blessed to be able to do them both.
Nice video. Lots of respect for Master Rickson. Anyone agrees that the Valente Brothers logo is weird? I mean, a guy throwing a kick and the other one dodging isn`t exactly an image you associate with bjj...
some modifications of THROWS in BJJ make it more effiecient and easier for THINY people! Also BJJ has modified and combined some JUDO throws for sake of PRACTICALITY! The third book of RIGAN MACHADO in his series of BJJ ENCYCLOPEDIA has it! Training on the MATT is better than POLITICAL fight!
@SCROGY Gentlemen, I watched the heated debate between you and I would make some comments: Grand Master Helio has always been against the use of points in competition, he believed that the real jj, was focused into submission. Look at the Gracie lineage, to know the origin of BJJ: Jigoro Kano -> Tomita Tsunejiro -> Carlos Gracie -> Helio Gracie We must thank Gracie for maintaining newaza saved, while judo has deteriorated in Olympic competitions.
There are plenty of comments from the greatest BJJ fighters that Rickson is on another level. World class competing blackbelts said, they got absolutly no chance against him, he is like the "god" of BJJ
Almost all of the Gracie's have been in street fights. If you are getting kneed in the face while pulling guard, you are doing it wrong. Why is your face anywhere near their knee while pulling guard?
Alright, sorry. I sometimes forget not everyone understands figures of speech. That last part was just a twisted version of this, "BJJ is perfectly decent to learn to get used to the ground game, but it's not going to make you invincible." I'm not a fan of BJJ, but I'm not like proust where I'm going to say it's worthless, people like that are either not even martial artists, or don't have a firm grasp on what the martial arts are.
@JMoore4291 Uh, I have never been to a tournament where you don't get points for a sweep. And guess what? Every combat sport is based on points. You can win on points in Boxing, Judo, Sambo/Combat Sambo, Wrestling, Karate, TKD, Muay Thai. That sounds more like an excuse to me. And Kron DID LOSE at ADCC this year. If you want unlimited matches the stay in the dojo. The people that run tournaments do have to go home at the end of the day you know. Not every match can be 3 hours long.......
@SCROGY wrong, rener and ryron dont even compete in that bullshit anymore because its so based on points... what are points anyways... if someone takes you down and gets 2 points and you double ankle sweep them and are then on top of them you dont get any points and you're still losing 2-0 so if that match stays there for the rest of the time limit you lose even if the other guy is stalling the whole time... gay. to me you didnt win until you made the other guy tap, thats admitting that you lose
Most BJJ black belts I know have never been in a real street fight. BJJ is really bad for street fighting, Judo to be honest is good against 1 person, but you tie yourself up. You pull guard in a street fight, against someone who can actually fight and you will get kneed in the face, kicked and then he will stand back and just kick the shit out of you while your lying there. This will be made a lot worse if he is wearing hard leather or steel capped boots
@SCROGY the best of shit that matters, like our army, but the shit that matters to me, the usa is better than any other country including brazil at mma and jiu jitsu, 135, 155, 205, and 265 champs are all american, about to be 170 when nick diaz beats the shit out of gsp, then all the new era of gracies were all born and raised in the usa with an american mom... thats an american
@JMoore4291 Ummm buddy you need to learn to debate. I DID NOT SAY the best of anything were in Canada. YOU said the best of EVERYTHING were in the U.S. Therefore you made a totally unsubstantiated statement that is both wrong and unsupported by evidence. You then go on to say that you "don't care" when you are presented with a list of sports where the best clearly are not in th U.S. That's not how logical debate works my friend. Do not create Strawman arguments and Red Herrings.
It seems like you detest...no, you absolutely hate BJJ with a passion. I'm assuming that you're a judoka since you're holding judo to a high regard as a self-defense art, but seriously, do you think it's mature to ridicule another martial art? Even if the Gracies do say what you think they say (they do), a true martial artist does not let these things bother him/her and instead, let their actions speak for themselves.
