Jeremy Donaldson they are "normal people ; the kind that believe in flags and kill other people because that's "normal" and being "normal " is the be all and end all of life.
Im glad ricky put the record streight that derek doesnt have a disability. Hes just a lovely kind caring person. We should all have a bit of derek inside us.. (not in a rude way) :-D
I suppose it’s kind of the moral of the story. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I love Derek. If everyone had a Derek in there lives there world would be a kinder happier more friendly place. 😊
I cried when Joan died and when he rode the girls bike behind his Dad's body when it was placed in the ambulance it was the cutest thing I've ever seen
Typical preconceived ideas of how a person is by how they're narrow mindedly viewed. "What's his condition?" Because he's "different" there has to be something wrong with him? If there were more people in the world like Derek, the world would be a much better place
Well said - why can't we just accept people the way they are ? (as long as they're not doing any harm) the world would be very boring if we were all exactly the same. As for breakfast TV presenters, they are absolute weirdos, nobody is that tidy or chirpy first thing, to me they're the freaks, not Derek.
A person can ofcourse have 100 conditions, I have epipepsy, colitis and sometimes depression. Honestly though those don't define me as a person and with derek he's utterly defined as a person by his good nature. Those politically correct twat interviewers just couldn't talk about any with a "condition" for fear of causing offense.
These hosts were complete morons, but I still love Ricky and everything he does is fantastic and funny. I love his perspective on life and the human experience.
I thought this, buut part of me thinks that we might have overanalyzed it! However, I do find most of the things said by morning hosts to come across as rude definitely.
In the states, on shows like The View, I often wonder whether they reflect the values and intellect of their viewers, or are just completely out of touch. I hope it's the latter.
I know a few people who really don't like Gervais (maybe it's his annoying laugh) but I think he's a very gifted writer and his acting in Derek is simply brilliant.
I really dont get people that dislike him. It baffles me. I see them as odd. And its sad, because they're missing out on something special. Problem is, they've already decided they don't like him before they've even watched 2 series' of Derek. They should do their research before making judgement.
I have seen derek multiple times and have loved it, it shows how even after his dad leaving him as a child that derek still wanted to look after him. I could really connect with derek from my personal experiences and could really understand what hes been through. Derek is one of the best tv programmes from this era
I just watched Season 1 of Derek and I'm hooked - Derek is such a beautiful character.... and like Ricky says in this interview, I wish I had a friend like him!!
'Derek' is the most delightful and beautifully poignant and funny and sad series I think I've ever seen. My mother died this week aged 91 after suffering Altzheimers for 13 years and I, foolishly perhaps, put this on, knowing what it was. I've laughed and cried and laughed and cried.......Ricky's portrayal of Derek is simply beautiful. As are all the rest of the characters. The observations are brilliant. Ricky Gervais is quite simply one of the best observational 'comedians' (I think more than a comedian in fact) of our time. Thanks for Derek and so much more
I wish more people would actually watch Derek. Every person I recommend it to don’t realise the concept of the show and form their opinions based on a 30 second trailer, much like these hosts.
Ricky: I'm going to promote Derek Interviewer: I'm going to do my best to shame him for writing/playing this type of character Ricky: I got a response for everything to make you look like an idiot
bill needs find a sense of humour, could he be more serious lol, youve got gervais on the show, not some uber serious politician, you get what it says on the tin bill you need to adapt
Derek. The most astonishingly incredible piece of film ever made. Loved the office. Loved afterlife. Derek is simply majestic. Ricky turns life and humanity on its head with Derek.
What a beautifully written series. The characters are just wonderful! Brilliant in every possible way. We should all have someone like Derek in our lives. 💜 Have watched this series so many times: joyous, sweet, thought provoking, sad, funny, emotional & relatable. Well done Ricky. You clearly have a heart of gold.
I've been binge-watching "Derek" since I have loved the other stuff Ricky has done that I have seen. It amazes me how he can bounce between fart jokes and existential crisis with characters so endearing you don't care that it gets schmaltzy. Having watched "After Life" before "Derek," I can see parallels, though "After Life" sort of hones what he did with "Derek." Brilliant stuff and very unique compared with what else is out there.
Not liking these interviews at all how ignorant I get it Ricky excellent excellent show unfortunately just started watching it in 2022 knew it was out there but regardless enjoying it I cry every episode but in a good way
Ricky Gervais, comic genius and he was so right Series 2 Episode 5 was leaving me in tears which were so sad then uplifting. Puts you through emotion this man (and I am not normally emotional). GENIUS.
Everything Ricky Gervais writes had been gold....Derek is superb..glad Ricky played the lead as you have to... Get it.. bittersweet series..😁😁and then along comes afterlife when you thought it can't get much better..genius writer 😁
Bill Turnbull sounds like he is saying 'hi' in an, 'oh, lovely the in-laws have arrived.' tone at 00:00 and does a cheeky little wobble on his chair to suggest a small gust of wind may have left his bottom as a nervous defence mechanism.
Derek hasn't got a condition. Back in the day before the clipboard mafia had to label everything, he'd be called a bit simple. But he doesn't need any help outside his friends and he is truly content in life. Not only that, he actually saves Kev's life. How many people without "a condition" can say that.
I rewatched Derek five times at least. I did the same with Breaking Bad and True Detective. Absolute masterpiece with the rest of the few. Even though Ricky is an atheist, this show brought me closer to God and other people. Kindness and love above all.
These two talking heads... Never mind them. RG is a genius, but to recognize it, you’ve got to let go, drop all of your presuppositions and experience it.
so its fine to laugh at a 100% mentally capable person at not being able to ride a bike but you can never laugh at someone with perhaps mental disabilities because those disabilities automatically excludes them from a bit of humor.... I have epilepsy and I wouldnt care if someone makes a few epilepsy jokes.
It was really heartwarming and enlightening to realise that thr epileptic community had elected a spokesperson for everyone. I hope your efforts are seen as a fitting tribute.
I love Derek, but revealing that Kev was a virgin was one of their worst choices. his sex addiction adds to the charm of his character. Without it he is more of a sympathetic loser than a sex demon loser
You have fallen trap to "intentional channel identification dysfunction"or I.C.I.D which has triggered a bout of non subjective minor point focus grouping that ignores the main points and plays on trivial pettyfication of wordage and length of sentence(none penal),to avoid the actual subject matter.
I've watched 2 minutes, and I got pissed enough to write a comment. (Yes im that angry. lmao).. But really, don't bullshit me saying "Derek" doesn't have a condition or isn't handicapped.. Obviously he is, and thats fine! Thats what makes it special, to see an adult with the innocense of a child, in a grown man. To remind of, of what we loved. Thats why I personally loved the show..
Oh btw.. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the show.. And the main reason is, what he lack in intelligence and over-analyzing shit. He has in love and fairness. It's a lesson for us "normal people". To stop overthinking shit, and enjoy life. That's how I see it! "Doesn't matter if your good looking, clever or whatever. As long as you're kind" ;)
Exactly. What have they ever done for entertainment? Sport. News Otogramming. Drama. Music. Radio. Cookery. Antiques. Plasticine animated figures. Nature.
@davidsmith5523 That is very true, but don't forget the BBC allowing pedos to work there and other criminals and also charging OAP's a TV licence. Some OAP's don't have that kind of money lying around.
Bullshit! They do exist you want a friend like Derek! No problem their in homes up and down the country MAKE HIM YOUR FRIEND then. I'm not having a go at the series I enjoy it but watching a millionaire talk cheap about other peoples reality makes me frustrated.
@ Avila For your information Ricky Gervais may be a millionaire but it's well documented that he and his wife Jane Fallon whom he has been with since college donate a lot to charities especially Animals, children and our soldier veterans living on the streets. Ricky unlike other millionaires like HARRY.REDKNAPP JUST FOR ONE EG THAT NEED TO. GO ON TIPPING POINT OR THE CHASE TO WIN FOR THEIR CHOSEN CHARITIES.
Yeah, in the episode with the Inspection it's heavily implied he could be Autistic and has just never been tested for it but when offered testing Derek just shrugs it off and says if it won't change who he is then it doesn't matter. Clever by RG.
His new sitcom combines mutual humiliation with animated contrived emotionisation to forge a surreal disfunctional mock doc that uses previously respected subject matter as a subject of ridicule and means of substantial income from the beeb coffers. Its time for the director general of the BBC. to wake up and smell the piss
First of all - what? Using big words and a very long sentence does not make an intelligent point. Secondly, if you watched the show at all you'd know it was on Channel Four, not the BBC.
What a load of self-righteous nonsense. Derek doesn't have a condition? Right, and Stephen Hawking just doesn't jog by choice. I mean, seriously, get real. I think denying that defeats the purpose of focusing on Derek's good nature. Utter rubbish.
What are you on about, people are different, and Derek is Derek - just because he's slightly different doesn't mean he automatically has a condition jesus
I love his work but who's going to wake Ricky Gervais up out of this saccharine rabbit hole he's in? Derek series 2 episode 1 was like a mixture of the end of E.T, a fluffy kitten/puppy montage, love story, the Care bears movie and a pile of sick. Series one was good, only mass rejection of this mawkish overkill will drag him from this mid-life crisis!
I've noticed that a lot of British TV shows that get him on tend to go on the attack, criticising the content in his work almost immediately, often amongst the first few questions. I think it shows a little contempt for him which I think is a British reaction to success. Problem is the presenters never get anywhere, critically.
If you look at Derek and make assumptions about him then YOU have a very big problem. You do. Not Ricky Gervais. Unequivocally and without qualification or exception, it is the people who see Derek and make assumptions about him based on his mannerisms and physical appearance, claiming he's on the autism spectrum, has Down's Syndrome etc, that are the problem with this world. THOSE are the people who are guilty of the very things they accuse Ricky Gervais of. THEY are the people who cannot see past the superficial, who cast aspersions and make snap judgements about a person because of how they appear. THEY are the mean spirited hypocrites who cannot move past their own ingrained prejudice. I genuinely find Ricky Gervais to be one of the most absolutely sincere people who has ever worked in show business. He is courageous, sticks to his beliefs, and people feel threatened by that. People simply cannot cope with what he and his creativity bring out in themselves. If you look in a mirror and don't like what you see, don't blame the mirror, blame the fucking twat looking into it.
