Eric Hilliard Nelson married Sharon Kristin Harmon on April 20, 1963 at St Martin Tours Catholic Church in Los Angeles. Kris was 17 and pregnant with their first child, Tracy. Kris had had a crush on Ricky since she was 12 and would catch Ricky's eye a few short years later. Their families were friendly and both sides equally approved of the union.
