Absolutely right mate.....it wasn't game changing moment but it was an era changing incident Aussies were always a good side but I don't think they wud have dominated the world so much if they hadn't won the 99 wc.....
Boy that '99 WC semi-final will remain alive for the people who are in their 30s and 40s or even older. That was the most tensed game ever. The greatest ODI ever.
People often talk about great centuries and bring up Pointing, Tendulkar, Kohli, Ab, they often forget Steve Waugh's 120. It's probably the most precious century in modern day odi cricket. That makes it the best century imo. Not the prettiest but one that every batsman would dream of making.. pure grit and will. What the century did is took Australia to the semis and the rest is history. They dominated for 10 odd years after that. What a time that was! Best world cup I've watched thus far :)
@juneaug Lok I wasn't around for kapil dev's 100, and yes completely forgot about Arvinda's 100 in the finals of the 96 WC. Safe to say that too was world cup winning.
@Joy Roy Ponting is my all time favourite batsman, but I still feel the Steve waugh century is the most under appreciated and overlooked imo. That's the kinda character he anyway was. Not the most flamboyant, not the prettiest, but definitely the toughest.

On 1 December 2006, Ponting became the highest rated Test batsman. Ponting is one of the most successful captains in the history of cricket. He have won 48 victories in 77 Tests as captain between 2004 and 31 December 2010. The early 2000’s saw Australia dominating every team in the world. The Aussies won a hat-trick of World Cups out of which Ponting captained Australia to 2 consecutive World Cup victories in 2003 and 2007 out of 1999, 2003, 2007. His record in the Ashes is the only thing which he would like to forget in his career. Ponting holds a record of being the only Australian Test captain to have led his team to three separate Ashes series defeats. Ponting is incredible as a player who scored 13,378 runs gaining an average of 51.85 in 168 Tests with 257 as his best score and scored 13,704 runs gaining an average of 42.03 in 375 ODI matches with 164 as his top score. Ponting made his international debut in 1995 in an ODI match against South Africa, and also made his Test debut the same year. He played alongside legends like Steve Waugh, Shane Warne, Brett Lee and Adam Gilchrist to name a few. He kept on piling runs for Australia since his debut. His innings of 140* in the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup final is most renowned as the mighty Australians blasted India out of the final scoring a huge total of 359. He was in top form and had scored 5115 runs in 71 Test matches at an average of 52.73 and 4800 runs in 131 ODIs at an average of 41.37. He already had 26 international hundreds by then. He became Australia’s captain in the year 2002, as Steve Waugh was dropped from the captain’s role. His aggressive captaincy gained him many fans, but also was criticised for his hard play. Ponting’s team was the best in the world for many years and he was rated as the best captain of his era. Australia had a 34 match winning streak in World Cups, which is the most for any team. In Tests, they had a 16 match winning streak. His team outplayed every nation in their home country except India. Ponting’s captaincy record is quite staggering as Australia won 165 ODIs under him at a winning percentage of 76.14 and 48 Tests with a win percentage of 62.33. Ricky Ponting is the only Australian to score more than 12000 Test runs and also 10000 ODI runs. He is ranked third in most centuries in Tests as well as ODIs, but second if both the formats are combined. Ponting has played the highest number of ODIs as captain. He also has most number of wins as captain in ODIs and both the formats combined with 165 and 213 wins respectively. Ponting is Australia’s highest run scorer in both the formats and stands only behind Sachin Tendulkar in ODIs overall. He is also the third highest run getter in Tests. Ponting, along with Shane Watson, holds the record for the highest partnership for any wicket in the ICC Champions Trophy (252 not out for the second wicket).Ponting's score of 242 against India is the highest individual Test innings in a losing cause. He was awarded the Allan Border Medal by the CA in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009. Ponting retained the captaincy of Australia for the 2011 World Cup in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Australia had won the previous three World Cups and entered the tournament as the world's top-ranked ODI team. Australia qualified for the quarter-finals, although Ponting failed to find form, scoring 102 runs in five innings during the group stage of the tournament. Australia met India in the quarter-finals and were defeated by five wickets. Ponting scored 104,his first century in international cricket in over a year. After being knocked out of the tournament, Ponting resigned his position as captain at both Test and ODI levels, endorsed Michael Clarke as his successor, and indicated his intention to continue playing. He is the only Australian Test captain to have led his side to three separate Ashes series defeats, but led Australia to their second ever 5-0 Ashes win as well as victory at the 2003 and 2007 Cricket World Cups and was also a member of the 1999 World Cup winning team under Steve Waugh. Statistically, he is one of the most successful Test captains of all time, with 48 victories in 77 Tests between 2004 and 31 December 2010. ANDDD The world cup gave rise to the BEST Ever One Day cricketing team in the history of game. THe start of a dominant era and a magical team to watch throughout the next 10 years.Pure Gold!
Everyone talk about Gibbs drop catch, Warne Bowling according to my opinion Mark Waugh fielding and opening the innings are the key point for Australia success. That semi final Donald run-out and some difficult catch in final done by Mark.. Steve's captaincy some crucial knock vs SA are very special for their success..
Ponting, Mcgrath, Gilchrist won 3 straight World Cup(1999, 2003, 2007) Ponting and Mcgrath was also part of Australia’s 1996 World Cup Runner Up team. It means, this two legend played 4 straight World Cup final. Absolutely Masterclass, Fenomenon.
1999 WC was probably the Most Open WC of all time when you had an excellent format where, if you blink more than once, you're gone, you're out of the Tournament, every game mattered, And more importantly when you had at least 4 very equally talented teams vying for the Title. Australia probably got a little lucky getting to the Final, but I believe Pakistan and South Africa were equally good teams. The Format of WCs needs a serious rethink nowadays. We as an audience shouldn't know the semifinalists after just a couple of weeks, where every game should matter a d where Associate Members should be given a good opportunity at representing themselves.
@@White742 We still have World Cups where more than 1 team is strong Bryce. Just that the format of the last 3 Tournaments has been such that people already know which teams are gonna make the cut and which others are gonna fall by the wayside. Where teams make it through even if they haven't performed to potential because the format favours them. Hence the format requires a serious rethink. I personally think the format of the 2007 WC was the Best to date, but then because India and Pakistan were eliminated in the first round itself, that format was junked. I believe we should go back to 4 groups of 4 teams each and the top 2 from each to qualify for a Super 8 Round. That would be very fair on everyone. My Personal Opinion.
@@White742 What's gonna happen Bryce is best left to the Almighty. We can just hope for the Best. I haven't gone through the Format of the upcoming T20 World Cup but if you say it's a good format then it must be a good one. 😀 Which country are you from BTW???
Lol non existent run at that. If Mark Waugh had hit the stumps he would've been run out. I wouldn't call him a goof for that though because without Klusener SA would've been knocked out in the first round. SA batting barring Klusener and Kallis were poor. Bowling and fielding good but their batting throughout the tournament was poor. They deserve to get knocked out especially if you're depending on your no 8 or 9 batsman to bail you out.
The best WC ever! Equal competition with bat and ball, the WC uniforms (best WC uniforms ever) and Australia deservedly winning the WC because of their it ain't over till it's over mentality. The one man I was happy for was Mark Waugh after he missed out in 1996 (was in prime form during that tournament). Bless Steve Waugh as well. Pakistan choked when it mattered the most (final) and SA's over dependence on Lance Klusener and loss to Zimbabwe in the first round cost them a place in the final. I honestly felt that AUS vs SA semifinal match should've been the final because it would've been way more exciting than the Aussie's annihilation of Pakistan.
Shoaib akhtar's bowling reminds me my childhood, oh! How beautiful was cricket at that time when there was no any social media we just used to watch cricket on TV and the players were just a dream for us means is this possible to watch a cricketer other than in match.
Had Pakistani captain at that world cup Wasim Akram not fixed the final match, which was confirmed by his teammates after some years,it was easily Pakistan's second world cup had he decided to bowl first on that bowling friendly pitch, still don't know the reason why he fixed and gave a gift to aussies that would start their domination maybe wasim already had won a world cup in imran's captaincy but this still breaks my heart,we were definately the strongest in that world cup and having already beaten the aussies,we should have looked at glory rather than money, shame
I didn't understand why mohd yusuf didnt played final They could have opened with izaz or afridi So they lost final because of one decision they could have fielded
1999 world cup victory led to pure dominance of OZ over rest of the world for next 1 decade Unbelievable to win two world cups without being beaten 2003 & 2007 #Respect #CricketAustralia That era those OZ players !!! Fortunate enough to witness those matches ALL ONE SIDED GAMES
Even though we lost so badly in the finals that it felt embarrassing for long. But 99 World Cup for me from an enjoyment and entertainment perspective was the best not coz we did well n reached the finals but coz of the 2 of the best ever back 2 back ODI matches between 2 brilliant teams at the most important stage of the tournament i.e. Australia vs South Africa. That was the best cricket World Cup followed by last year's World Cup again in England. Something about World Cup in England. I guess it's the gruelling contest between bat n ball that the pitch conditions provide there is what actually results in these gruelling n capturing contests.
Please don't tell that to anyone. We paid South Africans to lose that match. We Aussies want to fix matches without letting anyone know. Please don't spread truth.
