After recording my video I saw in this one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rE7h_N9BsTw.html that it is possible to remove the front plate first instead of trying to pull out the inner lens module like I did. In order to disassembly the final part of the lens, you have to take the front aluminum ring off(where the lens specs are), and turn the front lens face clockwise a few millimeters, then unscrew the three screws that hold the front element, take that off through the front and the rest of the lens from the back. Also the loose spring is from the barrel that rotates to close the lens protector. Thank You for the video.

Hello! Very nice video!! My Ricoh has the "closed shutter" problem and I am attempting to fix it before it gets worse! I am wondering if there are any updates? Did replacing the flex cable work? I called my local service centre and they said it might have something to do with dust build up as well! But either way, your videos have been helpful!! I think I will attempt my repair in another months time!
@mikphoto

The flex cable is a very likely cause for the malfunction but one can be only sure if the cable is inspected visually. I think photo services have been picking up the video instructions and offer valid repairs.

Great video! Is there any way to make the lens not to retract itself when power is turned off? In other words, any possibility of making the lens always stay in the position when it's powered on? Thanks.
@mikphoto
@mikphoto 2 года назад
Posiibly yes. You could extend the lens to the outermost position so that it doesnt retract when you push it back inside, then remove a gear from the gearbox and hope that a posible camera startup check wont recognize the modification. If you try, please let us know if that actually worked.

Great guide! Love how much detail you've gone into and I wish I'd recorded a video when I made my guide - this will definitely help people extend the lives of their GRs :-) I had a reader email me that the white ribbon cable (shown on left at 6:31) on their GR has come out from the mainboard - i.e. is still attached to the board on the backpanel - and they can't reach it because the connector is on the other side of the mainboard. I don't suppose you removed the mainboard at any point and might have some instructions for them? I wasn't able to help but pointed them at your video in case removing the sensor + lens would make it more accessible.
@mikphoto
@mikphoto 2 года назад
Thanks for looking Jamie. Just to make sure I understand it clearly. The ribbon cable is disconnected not from the backplate like in the video but on the other end from the mainboard (in between the battery compartement)? If that is the case one would have to lift up the mainboard. I had a look and it seems that in order to lift it a small green cable on the top left corner of the mainboard has to be unsoldiered first. The cable connects to a battery contact. It is so short that it prohibits lifting up the mainboard. Make sure not to shortcut the possibly still loaded flash capacitor battery!
@tomfenn7149
@tomfenn7149 Год назад
@@mikphoto you can discharge a flash capacitor by placing a 1MΩ resistor in parallel over the capacitor terminals. Don't of course hold the resistor with your fingers as you may very well get a shock! You can measure the voltage drop with a multimeter, so you know when the cap is discharged.
@paulp3053

so did you noticed any broken wire in the lens cables? maybe it is dust or dried substances. Strange thing, after that it works well perfectly no matter how many shots I make, until I close and open again...

I've got my GRII open right now and have stripped it down to the lens assembly. It's frightening just how much dust gets into this thing. It's everywhere! Except for and on the actual sensor. The sensor part is clean as a whistle. So the dust problem with this camera really does lie with the blue IR filter glass on the lens side (this would make sense as the dust appears the smaller the aperture is set). My suggestion to Ricoh (are Ricoh listening?) would be to scrap the retracting lens mechanism altogether, thus preventing the 'vacuum effect' that seems to suck small particles into the lens assembly. The lens when the camera is on doesn't protrude that much so I doubt it would be a problem for those still desiring a pocketable camera. It would also make the camera even faster to use from start up.
@mikphoto
@mikphoto Год назад
Thanks for your report Tom. Thats what I observed too. The dust accumulates on the hot mirror. The lens barrel design is a compromise between keeping it thin and allowing dust to enter. After first dust spots I used the lens adapter + clear filter. They never left the camera and protected it quite well. The GR III appears to be much easier to "clean" then the GR II since you have to unscrew less stuff to get to the sensor and blue mirror. Still I wish Ricoh could improve the lens barrel sealing even more.

@@mikphoto I'm currently waiting for the new PCB part from China to arrive, but while going into disassembly of the lens barrel a tiny piece of white shaped plastic fell out (including a cog- but I know where that came from), which is now probably going to give me a headache trying to figure out where to put it back. If anyone knows where it likely came from, I'd be more than delighted to hear from them. :) But back to my point about the extending/contracting lens... The front plane of the lens when fully extended, most of that is just the mechanical lens hood. The actual lens is about 8mm behind it when that is fully extended. It seems crazy that @Ricoh has opted to have all that 'dead space', which if the lens didn't extend at all, would only protrude slightly from the camera body. Since it's fixed anyway on 28mm (or 40mm in the case of the GR3x), it seems ridiculous to have this flashy auto protruding lens on such a serious (and expensive!) compact camera. I think Ricoh should just get rid of it altogether as the coatings on most modern glass today is pretty scratch-proof, and we should just have removable lens caps. In fact a smaller filter adaptor would probably suffice. Ot just a thread...
@mikphoto
@mikphoto Год назад
@@tomfenn7149 I guess the 8mm is a head room for macro mode. I recall that once macro is activated the lens extends a bit further towards the barrels end. I have to double check.

By the way, if I'm switching the camera on, the lens come out, but the screen freezes (it is not black though). I need to remove battery, then switch it on again and repeat this process few times for camera to work normally. Mine is doing the exact same thing. I've taken it apart, manually got the lens to retract but the second I turn it on it will extend the lens and power down. Turning it back on results in a motor whirring sound, nothing happens and it turns off after a second. Did you find any fix for yours?
@tomfenn7149
@tomfenn7149 Год назад
Exact same issue here. Flexible parts such as PCB's are almost always (apart from switches), the parts that fail first. Oddly with mine if I do the hold playback button then press the shutter release, this tricks the camera into thinking everything is okay, so I can then view the image on the back screen. But moving the aperture dial does not open or close the aperture iris which makes me conclude this is indeed a broken lens PCB cable.

I would NEVER attempt to as much as remove the screws unless I'm wearing a anti-static wrist band. Even if the device is outdated and/or obsolete. I just don't understand why anyone other than a electronics technician would attempt such a feat. You probably paid a hefty penny for your GR and never dreamt about taking it apart.... There is much evidence now that a anti-static wrist band can make the chances of frying a board even higher. Most modern components are a lot more robust than they used to be. There are of course exceptions, but in this case having all components already soldered to the board, any static charge present (as long as you aren't wearing loads of man-made fibres!) is dissipated throughout the existing PCB. In a nutshell, you'll be fine. :)
