I think you do a really nice job at explaining things in a way that is relatable and realistic. I enjoy my GRIII -- it's somewhere in-between a toy camera and a spy camera, but with a sharp lens and an APS-C sensor. I love my Fuji cams but the Ricoh color profiles are something that I really enjoy. Also great in nature. Rock on

Thanks as always for a clear, honest review. I hesitated for a while before I bought the Ricoh (have the Fuji). I’m glad I bought it (yet another camera !) and have it with me for those moments on the street when I need a quick snap. About the presets idea - YES ! You’ve got a great eye for rendering and I’d be interested.

I have shot with the original Ricoh GR for years now and I just love this camera. I like to always carry a camera and the GR allows me to do that. It is a great street camera but I also use it to shoot family gatherings or parties. I love the the image quality the APS-C sensor provides and although I am normally a Fuji/Leica kind of guy I love the handling of the GR. One of the truly great cameras.

Always good to hear your thoughts Benj. I shot Nikon professionally for many years and still rock a Nikon Coolpix A. Prior to its introduction, the Coolpix cameras were plastic consumer point and shoots. But the Coolpix A has a heartier build quality than the Ricoh GR series with similar specs (16MP, 18mm lens, APS-C sensor) and creates Nikon NEF files. If you decide to acquire a Ricoh GR, you might consider a neck lanyard. They are feather-weight cameras, so you can do this.

Couldn't agree more, and if you can, get the Nisi mini filter kit. Easy to enjoy with the 5 minutes time mode that avoid bulb mode as with every other cameras (30 sec. max.), say, when shooting very long exposure with a 10ND at sunset... I learned my lesson about dust with my X70 and X100. I have had a filter on this since day 1. No dust. I think the dust issue is so big because there's not too many things to complain about with this camera, so the little things blow up. I'd say it has the same dust problem intensity as the X70 or X100. Really a non-issue if you use a lens cap or filter before sticking it into linty pockets. ✨

"All photo exists of me were taken on an Iphone" - I feel that one so much, since I'm always the one behind the camera taken pictures of the family 😀 You already touched on the AF, but would be interesting to see, if your opion changes after using it for a fews and compare it next to the X100V. Most videos on YT say it's quite bad, therefore interested in your experiecen. What is also known is the bad battery life due to physics. Still would be interesting to compare it to the X100 series in regards of how many shots on one battery. I personally would like to see a new release GRIV with weather sealing, improved AF and perhaps optimised battery (if they want to keep the size only way to reduce battery consumption is by using parts which use less).

Hope to try one someday. I've been on a long point and shoot casual cam journey. Tried a lot of cheap and older options from panasonic, nikon and fuji. But right now i've landed on the X-Pro 2 and the pancake 27mm. One day would like to have my hands on this too, just wish the newer models had a flash and i'd be sold.

Have have the first gen GR (28mm) and use it with the snap focus mode.. put it in f/5.6 or so, and use the +/- buttons on the back to quickly switch distance. With that it becomes a super fast camera for street photography or snapshots.

Absolutely love the griiix as a daily snap camera. I really hope they improve autofocus and maybe re-include the flash. I own an Fuji T5 and honestly have been only using it when I don't want to deal with super slow af. I understand that snap focus exists, but don't love using it.

I had one, and yes the IQ is amazing and love the size and quiet, unassuming nature of the camera. Love how you get serious IQ in a package that no one takes seriously. Great for street shooting. My gripe was the AF had frustrating moments, and I did wish for an EVF. My framing was never great with this camera, and because of '40mm' focal length, it's less forgiving than the 28mm focal length of the GRIII. So I stayed with the GRIII.

I was thinking about getting the X100V, but then went for the X-T5 because I wanted interchangable lenses (coming from Canon EOS). I'm honestly really glad that I did, I was later able to try an X100V from a friend and it felt like a really "weird" size. It's too large to be truly pocketable unless you wear cargo- or very loose fitting pants, really not muuuuch smaller than an X-T5 with a very thin lens on, but misses many of the back buttons (let alone interchangeable lens support). It's this slightly "awkward" middle-ground where I'd rather have a more fully-feature X-T5 and a much smaller camera like the GRIIIx. Just my thoughts though.

I still have a a canon dslr and an X100v. Therefore I can choose what I want to take with me. The fixed lens was what attracted me to the x100 series of cameras. I am now considering getting an XT-5 and keeping both of the others.

I had the GRii for 10 years. It is a work horse. I have dropped it in multiple puddles and streams. I dont think its water proff. Or even water resistant. But I let it dry out for a day or two and it starts up fine every time. I have dropped it onto concrete mutiple times too. Its beat up. But it works everytime I start it up and takes excellent photos. Once its broken I will buy the GRiii. Its an excellent camera.

Owned x100f now GR3. If you don't carry a bag, GR3 is the better edc camera because of its size and weight. You can really fit it in your pants pocket meaning it is always with you. I tried to bring x100 out without a bag but it is only pocketable if you wear a jacket, and you still feel the weight. I don't use my phone camera much since carrying the GR3.

I looked for a small companion to my A7IV and evaluated the GRIIIx as well. But at the end I choose one of the smallest E-mount cameras, the A5100 + SEL20F28. The Ricoh weights 262g and the A5100 weights 270 (348 with the SEL20F28). Of course the A5100 is not the newest camera but it is very slim and offers with the SEL20F28 nearly the same experience like the Ricoh but I can still change the lens - my recommendation!

I've also taken the ricoh in situations where i cannot risk the a1 such as when I had to cover people crossing a treacherous body of water. I think the x100vi is too big but I want to check it out as a camera that has decent af and fits between a1 and gr3.

The GR is light. so light, that's what makes it pleasant too. Great astro/long exposure features the Fuji don't have, like infinity focus (star trails/milky way) or the 5 minutes time mode which avoids Bulb mode for many 10 stop ND long exposure. They'll take any 49mm filter (think Nisi mini kits) with the cheap adapter and you can switch those with the X100 series, X70, Sony Rx1r series, etc., all with the same 49mm cheap filter ring adaptor for those mentioned 49mm lens cameras. Another given with the Ricoh is the lens sharpness, far ahead of all X series (even if the V model has a lot of sharpness improvement over prior models) especially on the GRx with re-adds the removed element from the GR III, to give us the same incredible level of sharpness we had with the GR I and II. The additional wide 20mm lens kit (GR III) is excellent and allow for nice landscape shots but can't put filters on this one. So again, for easy, always at hand carry, although I hate the rather dull, bluish color science of all Ricoh GR's over Fuji's excellent one, the weight of this thing, way more than its ridiculous small size, makes it a joy over both the Fuji X series, and even over the X70, an adorable miniature of the original X100, closer in size to the GR, but heavy, and it really feels. (GR II, Fuji X70 owner)

the combination of the sony a5100 and the 20mm 2.8 is a good option too if you are looking for something that wont break the bank. I had a grIII for a while but ended up selling it because it was just as expensive as my full frame system, and i just could not justify keeping it any longer.
@JimIBobIJones
@JimIBobIJones 5 месяцев назад
A 3rd option to both is the G1X Mark iii. IMHO its the best out of the APSC compacts out there overall. As someone who shoots with a full frame interchangeable lens setup, and wants a fully capable everyday secondary camera out of their compact camera - the G1X is the only APSC Compact that fits the bill. The 1inch cameras are also great (especially those with f1.8-28 apertures) but the dynamic range does suffer with the smaller sensor. Having 24-70mm equivalent makes the G1X mark iii genuine alternative to carrying a full DSLR/Mirrorless. The F2.8 - 5.6 is less bright than a the Fuji but you also get to go wider to 24mm for landscapes and closer into the "nifty 50" and 70mm focal lengths when you want to focus into a subject. Being stuck to a single focal length - especially a "jack of all trades, master of none" focal length of 35mm equivalent for both the Fuji and Ricoh are massive turn-offs. It has 5 axis stabilisation, which is better than the GR III and of course better than the X100 with no stabilisation. The weather sealing is also nice - something both Fuji and Ricoh have omitted on their APSC compacts,

The Ricoh GRIII/GRIIIx with a monochrome sensor (like Ricoh's Pentax K-3 Mark III Monochrome) would be a killer camera. A monochrome sensor would be extremely useful for this camera, as it would compensate for its biggest drawback, the f2.8-only lens, with the one-stop extra light sensitivity gained by removing the Bayer sensor array.

The GRIIIx is my daily driver, and I traded in my X100V for it. I had been using Fuji cameras for 7 years, and after getting a chance to try the GRIIIx I far preferred the way it rendered and it's sharpness to my X100V (obviously somewhat subjective), and I think they've knocked it out of the park with the lens and sensor combo. The use case fit my needs better as well, as with a young child, having something that was truly one handed in operation was ideal, and 40mm is also my focal length preference. The dust issue is a concern, but the usability and picture quality trumps it for me.

An important bullet point to note is the X100 series has a built in flash to whereas the Ricoh GR iii does not. These small cameras truly get carried everywhere and not having a built in flash I’ve found has been a major disadvantage, especially during these shorter winter days.

I agree that I'd much rather have a flash than IBIS, which I think is what took the place of the flash. I think they couldn't fit all of it in. I think Ricoh has an opportunity here to create a very small on-board flash that is full TTL for that true point-and-shoot experience, that maybe has a built-in battery and USB-C charging. Something about half the size of the older Fuji EF-X20 would be ideal...

Yes with 40mm lens it became almost like Contax T2 (with Sonnar 38mm f2,8) that I used to use all the time! Perfect FL for me! Bought once T3 with 35mm but sold it right away, somehow it didnt work with me

I had a GRIII and it was a fantastic little camera. I used it all over Europe and used it way more than my X-T4. My main gripe with the Ricoh as a full time travel camera is the lack of any kind of weather or dust sealing. By the end of my Europe trip, i started having dust specs on the sensor which showed in photos. You can remove the dust usually in Lightroom, and can take apart the camera and clean the sensor (although sketchy) but this is what ultimately what ended up with me selling it. If Ricoh made another GR that was weather sealed (without a lens cap which takes away from the size) I’d buy it in a heart beat, over any X100 camera.

The photo transfer app is great too. I can transfer 16 mb JPEGs or full size raw photos easily (about 3 seconds each). The Sony app always crashes and is so temperamental. The 28 mm gr3 is my dedicated travel camera.

It's becoming a really confusing time for camera buyers. I recently got a Pixel 8 Pro (basically free from my carrier with a payoff discount). I have an X100V that I got below retail in 2021, and a Nikon Z7 (refurbished for $1399 without a lens). The Z7 with 40mm prime is only slightly larger than the X100V and has a grip, image stabilisation and a great evf, plus the flexibility to use any lens I have or would want. The X100v has the retro vibe, ovf/evf and built in flash. The Pixel 8 Pro is always with me, and has pretty great quality when shooting 12mp dng files. The head says sell the X100V, and just keep the Nikon gear and use the Pixel for snapshots. The heart says I will never sell the X100V... it is the fun camera that makes me happy. The Ricoh has always been a compelling camera, but besides pocketability... I can't find a reason to commit.

I have owned the X100v and the Ricoh GR III. I think the Ricoh takes sharper and clearer pictures. Another advantage of the Ricoh for me is the IBIS and the DNG RAW format. The lack of a viewfinder bothers me less with the Ricoh than the lack of a flip-up display. The Ricoh GR III, a card reader and an iPad fit in every travel bag. An unbeatable combo.

Have Leica M, Ricoh GR1, Fuji X100V, and sold the X100V. It's in a weird spot in terms of size. Not small enough to be a carry everywhere camera, and not much lighter when around the neck vs the M. Sold the X100V and kept the GR and Leica M.
@MatthewMorse

I think you really touched on the key point here that there's a use case for both of these cameras with the X100V looking and feeling like a more serious photographic tool with its viewfinder, controls, size, and accessories and the GRIII/x feeling a little bit more like a 35mm point-and-shoot that sort of gets thrown in a bag or pocket to have when or if the opportunity for a photo arises. While I wouldn't consider a GRIII/x for my only camera (mostly because of the lack of weather sealing), they do make for a great second body.

Nice review. I have shot with both and the GRIIIX has the sharper lens and the better color. As a former Fuji X owner, I am surprised that the GR trumped the Fuji in the color department. After all is it not Fuji who is the king of color? Short battery life is a negative for the GR. Otherwise, it is the more stealth/pocketable of the two for street photography.

Actually pocketable. Only serious camera with a distinguishable difference in size to other cameras. Everyone else perceives any camera hanging off you the same.

Hi Benj - I just wanted to add my take here. i had a Ricoh but the battery life just killed me. The closest I could get and still be happy was (is) the Fuji X-e3 (I prefer the X-E3 over the E4 if only for the Focus Switch on the front. And the price) with the 18 ƒ2. Put on a 27mm and you're in GIIIX focal length territory, and even smaller than with the 18mm. Anyway, I just shoot it in JPEG Aperture Priority and Auto everything else, and mostly in Manual Focus. My Point? It's really small, goes everywhere and has a decent battery life, at least compared to the Ricoh. I loved that little bastard, but when it comes to just shooting on the fly I've found that the X-E3 wins out, Because the ONLY thing - and I know it's an important thing - that the GR beats any Fuji X camera on is size. Just. In my case it's something I found I could live without.

I had the original analog Ricoh GR1, great little camera but it works best in program mode IMO (aperture mode was available). It had a very basic viewfinder though, which is missing on all the digital versions. A EVF (even a tiny one) would make the GRIIIx interesting to me. Without it's not.

the optional OVF they make for it works pretty well. I'd rather them bring back the flash on the next GR than add an EVF.

Honestly? I feel like that the nostalgia is a bit different. Yes, when I was younger, everyone was still shooting film. But in my teens, those shitty CCD point and shoot cameras became a thing and the GRiii really reminds me of those times. It's also really family-friendly. Anyone can use the GR because it's like those shitty CCD point and shoot cameras. Point and shoots reminds me of just capturing a fun moments without having to think. The X100v reminds me more of the other side of photography where you take a photo more for artistic intend if this all makes sense? I do wish it would have had a flash tho.

Had the GRIII and have the X100V with some overlap before selling the Ricoh. The only thing I liked about the Ricoh was the ability to throw it in most any pocket. The X100V is just a joy to use - I love the OVF (use it exclusively), film sims and the handling of the camera. It just inspires me to pick up the camera and shoot. Although fantastic for what it is, I never connected with the Ricoh.

The Ricoh GRIIIX is a real compact pocket camera, small, light weight, it has IBIS, it gives excellent image quality and it is cheaper than the much too hyped Fuji ! But I will wish the Ricoh had much better build quality and an EVF, so a Sony APSC Camera will be better !
