Actually not. A boxer can't lead with his head. Watch again and you'll see Bowe repeatedly do that. It's an illegal tactic in amateur boxing, because it leads to head butts. So that's why there was the 1 pt. deduction, then when Bowe was suppose to be taking an 8 count, he walks away - that's a disqualification. Bowe should have just boxed because Lewis wasn't very sharp in that match.
That was disgusting the referee was all over Bowe and distracting him at every opportunity, Lennox took advantage of Bowe being distracted by that interfering referee, and went for Bowe with a few sucker punches , that Reff was awful, I think Bowe would of had a pretty good chance of beating lennox later as a Pro he certainly wouldnt of been a push over .
Ridiculous stoppage. Bowe won the first round easily and was in no way hurt in the second. I know amatuer boxing is different but really....that Ref was just all over the fight.

Bowe was kicking Lewis' ass in this fight and then the ref went into his " cheat the American " mode. That wasn't a head butt and that bad call by the ref was what started Bowe's down drift. Bowe lost focus after that. Roy Jones, Jr was also cheated out of a Gold Medal in the 88' Olympics. They kicked Anthony Hembrick out on a technicality. Terrible officiating at the Olympic Games. Lewis definitely should've gotten a couple of Standing 8's after Bowe caught him cleanly several times in the 1st Round. Bowe should've fought Lewis as a pro. He was the better fighter, imo.
As a boxing fan that was horrible refereeing, even for amateurs. Lewis was just getting going and starting to come on while Bowe wasn't even that hurt. Lewis deserved the chance to truly finish off Bowe and Bowe deserved the chance to fight back. Both fighters were robbed. Both fighters deserved the opportunity to show what they had and neither of them really got that chance and for those of you on here saying it's amateur, get out of here. I've watched amateurs since I was little & that was bad
i love lennox lewis( i like bowe too) but i have never nor will i ever understand why this fight was stopped. i understand the standing 8's but i dont understand the stoppage. the ref was super involved in this fight to begin with. i think this was the start to horrible olympic boxing. i heard the 2012 olympics were pretty bad for boxing aswell.
I recall this match.....was in disbelief when it was stopped so suddenly. These are big men it is for the gold medal. The ref was making sure he was being seen and was a fool.....and its too bad for the boxers that had to put up with this. By the way I was routing for Lewis .....but this was a hollow victory . Thats why they should have fought in the pros...to settle it once and for all.....
Maybe Bowe wasnt being coherent. Remember he ate a big right from Lewis and then raised his hands in victory. The ref was closest to him and probably thought the dude was gone. Secondly throughout the fight he is being told to keep his head up. He ducks his head down and goes swinging which isnt allowed in the amateurs. In this fight you can already see the stylesdeveloping: Bowe the brawler and Lewis the technician
@IDante1Savage of course the one thing dumber than Ferdie pretending it's outrageous to stop an amateur fight when a fighter isn't badly hurt is people who have tried to say that somehow Bowe's reaction to the stoppage meant he was a coward or didn't have heart. Lewis took Bowe's shots in the first, then Bowe struggled taking Lewis' in the 2nd. Early stoppage or not it was impressive how Lennox overpowered him and turned the fight around when it wasn't going his way. Bowe was shook up there and would've been again if it continued.

@IDante1Savage ah, well sorry for my intemperate response. there's something to that, although I'm not sure Bowe was chicken so much as he couldn't maintain the type of conditioning he would have needed to face Lennox. He had all the tools but was undone, essentially, by his love of cake.
Time would show that Bowe had a way better chin than Lewis, which makes this stoppage all the more ridiculous. Comparing the size of these two, to the size they would go on to attain, is more than enough proof that Lewis was clearly on PEDs.. Not that I blame him.
