Ride 347 - Okanagan Gran Fondo 2024 - Life doesn't always go as planned

This is the 12th annual Okanagan Granfondo that took place on Sunday, July 14, 2024. Starting in Penticton, B.C., several thousand participants rode the 153 km course north along the westside of Okanagan Lake to Summerland for the KOM climb before returning back to Penticton and then south along the eastside of Skaha Lake to Okanagan Falls. From there, riders headed south through Oliver, past the Burrowing Owl vineyard on the northside of Osoyoos before joining Highway 97 for the ride back north to Penticton.

Well done Steve. 86kms, in temperatures touching upwards of 20s, clipping 30s is a huge achievement.

Well done Steve. 86km is still a long way, especially in that heat. I think you would have been fine doing the Ride The North event I did last Saturday (114km on the day) as max temperature was a measly 17c. When I started in the morning it was only 11c ... in August! Still, I shouldn't complain, heat exhaustion was never going to be an issue for me

Hi Robin. I was thinking that before. My ancestors come from Scotland and I think I'm built better for that climate. But, this time out, I think I just overcooked myself by taking a faster pace than I was used to. Perhaps it would have been different if I'd warmed up, but I'll never know. Congrats on completing that ride. It seems you got all the seasons in that one fondo except perhaps snow.

I will be signing up for this next year. Did you have to book a hotel well in advance?

It is a good idea to book in advance. For this year, I think I booked in February. I made a mistake in 2022 and left it late and the only thing remaining was the Ramada at $500 per night. It's a nice place, but it's out of the way and that price is high. I picked up a nice place (The Slumber Lodge) along the northside beach road and stayed for a week. There are several hotels along that stretch. Prices are reasonable.

@@stizz19 Yeah, its per night. That hotel is expensive. They have a nice hot tub and pool though.
