(6-6-19) Andrew and I decided to take a short ride on the Oklahoma City Streetcar. It only costs $1 for a one way ticket and I believe $3 for a longer pass. From what I saw, this is a nice system to get around downtown if you are willing to spend a tiny amount of money.

This is what every major city needs in the US in order to mobilize people throughout the car jammed zones.

This street car is brand new. They finished this system about a year ago I think. My grandma told me when they started building it (she lives in the area) and said it actually caused some pretty heavy traffic in downtown for a while (no suprise). It was surprisingly a big deal to the entire city even though it only serves downtown.

These streetcars look so cool and they look sort of futuristic aswell as if they exist in 10 years time.

I found out the cars have their own batteries. When there’s no Catenary wires in the segment, the cars will operate with batteries. They have to use batteries because of height restrictions when traveling under the BNSF tracks.

One of the main reasons for building streetcar lines is to draw investment to downtown areas, but a more fundamental problem is that downtown areas in the United States and Canada have become dominated by highways and parking lots, which makes them unfriendly and unattractive to pedestrians. In order to have a traditional pedestrian-friendly downtown with continuous lines of closely spaced buildings along the streets, it is necessary to get rid of the parking lots, which would require that people leave their cars at home. Accomplishing this requires a mass transit system that connects the suburbs to the city center. A streetcar that is a local area circulator doesn't fill the need. Cities in Europe are meeting the need by building mass transit and networks of protected bike lanes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h-I6HFQXquU.html

There was just one other passenger on the streetcar! I thought it might attract more riders given that it was new and still a novelty.

The one in Phoenix( not a trolley) goes more than 25 mph, keeps up with 45mph street traffic, and goes to the airport. 30 miles with 38 stops and expanding to South Phoenix and North

This was also the same day which a lot of the city flooded out with so much rain. There were multiple highways shut down because of the flooding.

I’ve heard mixed feelings about these streetcar systems in multiple cities. From someone who doesn’t live here and needed a quick ride downtown, it worked well.

This is what happens when people who wouldn't know a Janney Coupler from a manhole cover get hold of a bunch of tax money. First they destroyed OKC Union Station - connected by rail to every major venue in the city, state and region - making certain that a downtown streetcar had nowhere to go. Then they blew a bunch of money on THIS thing (what IS it?) - after letting the oil big-wig who built that big, ugly building downtown tell them "don't string trolley wire in front of my structure." It was never going to be ANYTHING except one more highway-lobby argument against real multimodal transportation.
