Hey great video, im looking for a good budget suit class AA to start riding dualsport/adventure on my old transalp, i live in the EU so this MSR and the explorer suit is to expensive to ship. I really like the layering system so i was wondering if something like revit sand 4 would be a good alternative? also i may add a armor shirt and jersy for the extreme heat days offroad
Really appreciate the real-world fit information as well as the "rain test" in sitting position astride a bike instead of standing in a shower. Much more relevant for moto riders. Just used your Revzilla link to purchase a REAX vented riding shirt for my summer riding. Thanks for your garment reviews. BTW, the water run - off the helmet and down the back of the collar always gets me in heavy rain (while I'm looking for a shelter to get off the road and out of the rain!)
Thanks Ian. Received the jacket for Father's Day and was going to send it back to get the Explorer but after hearing your review I'm going to rethink sending back
I wonder what his neighbors thought about him spraying himself on a stationary motorcycle? Love the commitment to bringing us no B.S real input that isn't biased. Thanks Ian! By the way, your channel got me out of the Harley bagger game and over to the ADV bike life.... I love it. I bought a Pan America Special.
I just got this set and the MSR boots and socks for my first ADV set. Agree on the collar being a little weird. Its pretty decent and cool with the vents open if youre just wearing shorts and a light shirt underneath. The boots are comfortable after a $15 insole was put in but they dont breathe at all and your feet sweat like crazy.
It’s always great to see you posted a new video. I got excited about that XC (or XE) Scrambler I enjoyed you reviewing the 900 Scrambler so I really hope you do this model. Please Ian do..! Greetings from Argentina!! Thanks always for tour amazing work!!
Good review. I got the Voyager set in April. I’m close to your size. 6’ 200lbs and same chest size. The large was too tight at the shoulders and pulled up on the sleeves when in handlebar position so I had to go XL and it fits well and has room to layer for colder weather. I feel the pants are a little “crunchy” or noisy but not so much for the jacket. The right chest pocket has mesh in the back and can act as a chest vent. My main complaint is the jacket and pants don’t connect. Overall, I really like the set. I’m not sure yet if it will be too hot for summer weather.
Thanks for another great review. I'm in the market for a new suit for an 8 day trip around Ireland in September (but I'm due for new gear, anyway). I liked this set because of the cleaner look of the jacket. I'm not a fan of a multitude of enormous, externally stitched pockets, but they seem to come on most ADV jackets. After seeing your water test, I think I'm probably going to spend a couple hundred more bucks go with the Alpinestars Andes V3 set-up. This outfit looks versatile and water resistant enough for occasional showers, but not for sustained rains or the massive summer downpours we get in the Rockies.
I purchased the jacket. An absolute steal for the money. The only downside for me is the bunching of material and the forearm adjuster at the upper forearm. Could use waist adjusters as well.
I recently bought the MSR Voyager pants for use on my road touring bike(and for an ADV, when I get one). I hate getting in and out of "rain gear", especially pants, plus its so damn hot in the summer. When I'm touring I plan to wear the Voyager pants for the extra protection, the venting and waterproofing. If its a rain day I can wear my regular rain jacket and if I get caught in a pop up storm, at least my underwear and socks will stay dry with the Voyager pants on(I find my upper body dries out fast when riding, its the lower that makes riding uncomfortable and stays wet .
probably right unless you get an ultra expensive jacket with Goretex embedded in the outside layers, like my Revit Dominator GTX jacket. However, even with it I still put on a wet weather jacket as it keeps the cold air off the jacket.
Nifty looking kit, but TPU coating means it's an expensive, vented, plastic bag. Wouldn't you rather put a cheaper, more compact TPU coated rainsuit in your bag and throw it on over your real riding gear rather than commit to a $500 suit that's going to become wet from the inside because it's a drybag?
Keep in mind that riding off road the water generaly does not come at you undet pressure, so the amount of water getting through will be most likely less.
Thx Ian - I own the Explorer suit, I love it - although as summer is approaching I realized it is way too heavy/hot even with all ventilation opened. I was really hoping with this video you'd cover if this is 'summer/hot' gear - I'm comparing to the Klim Dakkar set - which looks light but does not claim waterproof. With this set from your video, it doesn't look like the jacket is very well ventilated (at least not like the explorer set) so I'm disappointed. It would be great if you could actually get out in hot weather with this suit and let us know if this will work for high heat environment -
Followed the link to Rocky Mountain, it lists the pants (as you said) abrasion resistant, but not abrasion rated. Understanding these are more adventure riding pants - how much abrasion protection are you loosing for the blacktop runs? Am new to this and trying to understand the ratings. Thank you.
Not going to get CE2 at that price point? The Sedici Garda Suit has CE2 at a lower price point, granted they don't include hip or back, but those arent to much extra.
That’s not for us to see ya taking a shower now !!!🤣🤣🤣🤣 You should do that before coming on stage and tell us bout the gear boss 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Nice idea though gotta give it to ya🤣🤣🤣🤘🤘👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
Hi Jan, could you give some advice for a beginner - I'm about to buy Forma boots, but I'm not sure if I need low or high. I would really appreciate your answer, thank you!
GoreTex is a coating also. There is no such thing as 100% waterproof gear no matter what you pay for it unless it is rubber like offshore fishermen wear. I put over-the-top backpacking rain gear on no matter what I'm wearing. All of this proprietary stuff is great for the economy though.
I would also have a wet spot in my crotch area if i ever decide to water hose myself on a 40 degree day. Thats probably the most normal thing to happen at that point.
