This is going to sound crazy, but when this song came out in the early 1990s my youngest sister said it was her favorite song ever. I remember watching her bounce along to the song whenever it came on the radio, lost in the music. Flash forward about 15 years to the mid-2000s, when she suffered a serious medical event that put her into a coma. As her condition deteriorated the doctors told my parents to prepare for the worst. We literally began making funeral arrangements for her. My mother picked out her burial dress, and I burned a CD to play at her funeral service. This was the song I selected to be played. Not only was it her favorite song, but the lyrics will send a chill up your spine under those circumstances: First you look so strong, then you fade away The sun will blind my eyes, I'll love you anyway Thirsty for your smile, I watch you for a while You are a vapour trail in a deep blue sky The story has a happy ending: my sister eventually recovered from the coma. Although she suffered severe hearing loss and is still legally deaf from the high levels of medications that were administered to save her life, she is alive and well today and continues to love this song. Music has a truly remarkable ability to augment and ultimately transcend the human experience.
Christ, only 19 likes including mine and no replies. That is a travesty for such a wonderful comment. So glad she pulled through. Your last sentence sums up the power of music, surely the greatest of all the arts and the pinnacle of human expression. What a song. How did they conceive it and record it so perfectly? Wow.
That should be a novel adapted into a movie, with this song as a theme song. And I don’t mean to trivialize your experience. Your story has it all, compacted into a comment post.
First you look so strong Then you fade away The sun will blind my eyes I love you anyway Thirsty for your smile I watch you for a while You are a vapour trail In a deep blue sky Tremble with a sigh Glitter in your eye You seem to come and go I never seem to know And all my time Is yours as much as mine We never have enough Time to show our love
It was an experience when we first played this back in 90. The years have been filled and fuelled by music and concerts going along with life. The gang is older - 49,50 - and this album has more attached to it then we could have expected. Makes us feel young. Love it. RIDE.
Mate, I literally feel shivers instantly when this tune comes on. I still remember vividly the time when I was stuck with my mate's (at that time we were still best mates that is) gorgeous Mexican girlfriend in a bathroom just me and her, while people were waiting for the locksmith of the apartment complex to come undo the lock. She had long thick shiny black hair to her bum, an amazing round, big butt, beautiful dark brown eyes... The music was playing in the living room, and we started slowly tongue kissing while holding each other alone, just me and her in the bathroom. This song was playing in the living room. And nobody knew what was happening... I later texted her that week and she snuck into my place to have the most amazing sex I've ever had with any woman. The point is, this song brings me back to that moment. And it feels so f*cking good, I can't... Damn. I get emotional everytime😁
Maybe it's just me, but I love the guitars in this song. They're so pretty and gorgeous, and they sound a lot like The Byrds at times. I honestly believe that The Byrds would be so proud of Ride, for what they did on Nowhere.
I am so privileged to have grown up when tracks like this first came out swapping new bands and tracks with friends, the feeling of overwhelming youth and freedom the lazy days lost just feeling the music, every time I here these and other classics of the soundtrack to my youth I fill with that same feeling I got the first time these graced my ears! for people just finding these welcome to the gateway to eternal youth
@@ponch2100 I'm 50 and am in bits again as ever - seeing this live 4 times over the last few years did the same - this chimes with our emotions so much. Just beautiful.

Christopher Heppingstall yeah, he is stunning. One of the reasons i got into this band so much 25 years ago. And he isn't flash. Just sits there and produces magic with no need to gurn with his top off, like so msny other drummers. Only Reni is is the same class.
Laurence Colbert is great. He has kind of a jazz feel but harder. Brendan Canty is awesome as well but he's kind of locked into the same time signature. You guys should check out Rat Scabies from The Damned, especially with Paul Grey on bass, ie The Black Album. Simone Pace with Blonde Redhead was a real treat on Misery is a Butterfly, when he was messing around with circular sounds and clockwork. Guy Picciotto produced that album, speaking of Fugazi.
This track fully adumbrates the 90s, in the exact way that New Order's Ceremony adumbrates the 80s. It's all here - listen carefully and you can even hear Neutral Milk Hotel in utero
Absolutely. The same goes for the rising and then crashing waves of chords in Sennen also by Ride. They end far too soon. Beautiful beyond words. We just have to feel it.
i was singing “glit-ter in your eye, awoahahhhhahh” the whole day. i kept on searching up the lyrics but couldn’t find anywhere until i searched in my playlists. i replayed it till i fell asleep.
A friend introduced me in colleg in 1991 to his vast collection and knowledge of indie rock and this CD single was one of the highlights. I must've bugged him to let me borrow it 50 times. Lol edit add: the single had the great white shark on the cover.
I just need to know that someone out there listens and understands and doesn’t try to sleep with people even if they could have. I need to know that these people exist.
@@yaddahaysmarmalite4059 I was quoting the perks of being a wallflower, but hey, I am glad to know that people like this exist! Also, you’re listening to some great music, so that counts!
@@littlekingtrashmouth9219 I've been listening to bands like this since the late 80s. it never gets old. ethereal beauty that's energetic without being aggressive. I hate aggressiveness so much.
Whilst Ride were one amazing group the drummer was off the scale, everything about this band will never be replicated at the point they made this epic album and the age they were. Top 10 albums of all time
Ok this was this hit? I still have this cd but this song seemed to be everywhere at some point. Seemed they were not appreciated back in the day, at least in the US. Maybe the vocals not ideal for audience. But I met a few way back when who got it and it still exceeds the sound limiters for beauty and volume wall.
I'll toss my hat in the ring as well. If you would be so kind check out the latest album from Suede. The album is called Night Thoughts and the musically minded amongst you will enjoy it. Just listen to the track called outsiders or The track called I don't know how to reach you, and make your own conclusion as to the merits of Suede. An extensive back catalogue as well. The tracks I suggested, give one or both of them a go yeah? That would be lovely. Thanks folks.
One of my regrets in life is not remembering the day, the moment, when I first listened to this track. I suppose it's a little like when climbers can't remember the day they first heard about Mount Everest, or cyclists the Tour De France.
