There’s so much truth to that! Some people believe confidence comes from having a well behaved horse, but it does actually come from having control of your horse in any situation because even if they are trained and behave well they are still a horse, and can be fresh or spook at something and knowing that you can stop the horse from reacting and quickly bring them back to thinking things through is key, but this doesn’t come easy, time, lessons, education, and effort are going to be needed from the rider, Thanks Larry always love watching ❤

I trained my horse and that included training him on one rein stops. We do not do them regularly now but I know if I ever need it I have that in my back pocket. I recently attended a clinic and the clinician feels that training one rein stops on a horse is a bad idea because they learn to ignore it or they learn how to run with their heads bent around. He recommended never training it on a horse, but practicing yourself with a set of reins attached to something. I kinda see where he's going but I'm not sure I fully buy it, because I feel like if you haven't taught the horse how to give laterally like that, the one rein stops WON'T work when you need it. Curious for your thoughts on this.

I also do NOT recommend teaching a horse the one-rein stop via the natural horsemanship method. They take the horse's head away and ALSO try to kick his hindquarters out of gear. I don't do that. Your clinician is talking about horses who have accidentally been taught how to "rubber neck". I don't do that either. I DO LIKE COMMON SENSE horse training.

@@ltrocha got it! So, instead, if I work on having a horse soft and responsive vertically and laterally, the one rein stop will happen (if and when needed) even if they haven't been trained on it specifically, is that right?
