Thank you. This house was built in 1872 by one of New Jersey's wealthiest families. They built it for their son, General E. Burd Grubb, the youngest Union General of the Civil War. It is amazing.
I just bought my wife a Ridgeway Kensington Grandfather for our 22nd anniversary. I know nothing about clocks, but I fell madly in love with it once we got it up and running. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've run to watch it strike the hour. It's been great.

Few people have. They owned a furnace out by Lancaster and sold munitions to the army in every war starting with the Revolution in 1776. They had 7 generations of wealth. E. Burd Grubb's wife was Violet Sopwith, of Sopwith Aviation fame in England. (The Sopwith Camel won WWI and I don't know if you remember, Snoopy's doghouse was called his Sopwith Camel when he fought the Red Baron.
I love these 70s grandfather clocks, there's just something about them. I have an Emperor from the late 70s that my grandmother gave me. I really enjoy the moon dial in particular.
I found a 1982 Ridgeway on the curb that someone was throwing out. Looks almost identical to yours. Cleaned up the case and movement and it now keeps perfect time. The only thing I needed was a new key for the lock and the cleaning supplies for the movement, oh... and the knowledge of how to do the maintenance. Best curb find ever!
Hi Kathy. Sorry so slow to respond. Move the minute hand to the 12. Count the number of chimes. If the hour hand says 9:00 but the clock chimes 3 times, you just move the hour hand to the 3. The hour hand is designed to slip on the shaft with a little pressure. Don't worry, you won't hurt it. Once you get the hands and chiming correct you can then spin the minute hand around several times to get to the correct time. if your clock now says 3:00 but it is actually 9:00 you just spin the minute hand around and around until the hour hand is on the 9 and the minute hand is on the 12. Some manufacturers say you can move the minute hand counter clockwise. I NEVER MOVE IT BACKWARDS for any reason. If you miss the time just spin it clockwise until you have the correct time. The chimes will correct themselves within the next 2 hours. Let me know if you have any questions.
