Riding a bike
Text and music: Eddi Hüneke
Written on 14.06.2019, the second anniversary of my father Martin's death.
On a quiet side street many, many years ago
I learned from you as a small child how to ride a bicycle.
You held my bike by the saddle and walked beside me,
And suddenly I realised I was riding alone, no one was holding me.
That's how I got to know freedom as a little child
and felt that we want to be free as long as we are alive.
You taught me to think without support wheels.
When others said "this way", it didn't matter to you.
Free - completely free
Free - completely free
Now you are lying in front of me on the bed, and your voice is scratchy.
Worn out and crumpled, you lie there in your place.
You had to let go of so much during your last years.
You say that what you miss most of all is riding your bike.
You showed me how to ride my bike once, I say,
You smile softly, you think back, your smile remains.
Then you say, even if it's hard on your voice:
My father also taught me how to ride a bike.
Free - completely free
Today I have children of my own, four of them,
They learned to ride a bike from their father, just like you and me.
That's how freedom is taught to the next ones through the years.
I readily admit that makes me proud and happy.
I love this way of getting from one place to another, wind in my hair,
And I ask myself: are you watching us ride our bikes from above?
Are there cycle paths where you are? Are you wearing your helmet?
Are you following the rules now? Or are you still a rebel?
Free - completely free
Free - completely free
